A port city: why Durban hires trucks as much as diggers

The Port of Durban is the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa and handles about 60% of South Africa's container traffic through the Durban Container Terminals at Pier 1 and Pier 2. Around it, the industrial and logistics areas south of the harbour run on trucks, so side tippers, horses and trailers, lowbeds, forklifts and crane trucks are hired here more than almost anywhere. Bulk cargo, containers and machinery all move between the port, the warehouses and the routes inland.

Durban ground, rain and permits

Steep sand ridges on the coast, slippery clay inland

Much of coastal Durban, including the Berea and the Bluff, is built on the Berea formation, ancient red sand dunes that are extremely steep in places and have little clay to hold them together. Inland, the shales of the Pietermaritzburg formation weather into very slippery clay. Both have slid before: the Bluff slopes were studied after landslides in the late 1950s, and Clare Estate, built on the shales, had landslides in the April 2022 floods.

What it means for your hire: on steep stands, the machine needs a safe working bench, and cuts into a slope are kept short and supported until the retaining wall is in. Trucks need firm access, which on clay vanishes after rain. Send photos of the slope and the access road with your request, and we'll pick the machine and size that can work there safely.

Summer rain, and storms that wash out roads

Durban is in the summer-rainfall east of the country, where the South African Weather Service notes rain is heaviest, with the season normally running from October to March. Heavy rain can still come outside it: the April 2022 floods left an embankment failure on the N2 northbound and N2 and N3 repairs. Plan earthworks and open trenches for the drier months where you can, and keep stormwater away from fresh cuts.

eThekwini wayleaves and excavation permits

eThekwini's Excavations By-law, 2022 controls all work in the public reserve and municipal servitudes:

  • No work may start before a wayleave is approved and issued; the work then runs on an excavation permit.
  • The applicant does a service enquiry first, and the municipality aims to process a new wayleave within 30 calendar days.
  • A road closure needs its own application four weeks before the road is closed.
  • Trenches are backfilled and reinstated to the by-law's specification. A request for permanent reinstatement goes in within 24 hours of backfilling, with a 12-month guarantee period.

Machines for hire in Durban

TLB hire in Durban

The everyday machine for foundations, trenches, retaining-wall footings and clearing: R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator with a breaker. Durban is one of our main centres, so the TLB drives to site. Full detail: TLB hire in Durban.

Excavator hire in Durban

For bulk earthworks, slope cuts behind retaining walls, stormwater lines and clearing slips after storms: a 20–25 t excavator is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator or R340–R690 an hour. On steep sites its reach and tracks make it safer than a wheeled machine. It comes on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back inside the city. See excavator hire rates.

34 ton side tipper trucks for hire in Durban

A 34 t side tipper (truck and trailer) with driver is R75,500–R92,000 a month with operator, on monthly contracts hauling aggregate, sand, coal and bulk cargo to and from the port and inland. We send company documents and a formal quote on request. See side tipper hire.

Side tipper trailer for hire in Durban

If you have your own horse, a side tipper trailer is R25,000–R29,500 a month, or about R2,100 a day for short work.

Horse and trailer for hire in Durban

A horse (truck tractor) with driver is R42,000–R63,000 a month with operator, or about R6,300 a day. Paired with a side tipper trailer, it's the full 34 t rig above. Tell us the cargo, the route and the months.

Lowbed hire in Durban

To move excavators, dozers, rollers or your own plant: a 30 t lowbed runs R23–R90 a km with driver, depending on the load and distance. Smaller plant deliveries run R43–R52 a km. Loads over legal width or mass need an abnormal-load permit, which we flag when we quote. See lowbed hire.

Water tanker hire in Durban

Water tankers keep dust down on sites and haul roads and wet the layers for compaction: R2,000–R2,300 a day with operator for 8,000–12,000 litre, R2,400–R2,800 a day with operator for 14,000–18,000 litre, R4,000–R5,800 a day with operator for 23,000–25,000 litre. See water truck hire.

Scissor lift hire in Durban

Warehouse racking, ceilings, lighting and shopfitting on firm, level floors: an electric scissor lift (6–12 m) is R1,000–R1,500 a day; a diesel rough-terrain scissor lift (8–10 m) for outdoor work is R3,350–R3,700 a day, machine only. It comes on a trailer, R1,300–R3,840 there and back in the city.

Compressor hire in Durban

A diesel compressor with a pneumatic breaker is priced per job: exact price on WhatsApp. A heavy electric jackhammer is R380–R610 a day. See compressor, breaker and mixer hire.

Questions people ask

How much is a TLB per hour?

A standard 4x4 TLB is R320–R410 an hour dry, which means the operator is included and you pay the diesel. Wet, with diesel included, it's about R580 an hour. Hourly hire usually has a minimum number of hours, so most Durban jobs are booked by the day at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. See TLB hire in Durban.

What is the meaning of plant hire?

Plant hire means renting construction machinery, the “plant”, for a job instead of buying it. In South Africa it usually comes with the operator: you hire a TLB, excavator or side tipper by the hour, day or month and it arrives with someone qualified to run it. Small plant means compactors, breakers, mixers and generators.

What sector is plant hire?

Plant hire is part of the construction sector. In Durban it also serves the port and logistics trade, road and municipal work, and industry, from moving containers and bulk cargo to clearing flood damage on slopes.

Do I need a wayleave to dig in Durban?

If the work is in a road reserve or municipal servitude, yes. Under eThekwini's Excavations By-law, 2022, no works there may start before a wayleave is approved and issued. The work is then controlled by an excavation permit. The applicant first does a service enquiry, and the municipality aims to process a new wayleave within 30 calendar days.
