Durban is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. A short lift still carries a minimum charge, because the crane has to drive in, set its outriggers and rig before the first lift. We have few price points for cranes, so the figure for your lift comes back in writing once we know the weight and the radius. How a quote is built: mobile crane hire rates.

Where Durban's crane lifts happen

Around the harbour

The Port of Durban is the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa and handles about 60% of South Africa's container traffic. The depots, warehouses and workshops around it hire cranes to set machinery, swap motors, move containers and put up steel for new sheds. Port sites have their own access and permit rules: send them with the booking.

Berea, the Bluff and the hillside suburbs

Steep stands mean roof trusses, pool equipment, water tanks and precast wall panels lifted from the street above or below the house. Reach, not weight, is usually the problem.

Umhlanga, the North Coast and Pinetown

Offices and apartment blocks north of the city need steel, rooftop aircon plant and precast; Pinetown and New Germany factories need machines lifted in and out. Ballito is about 50 km from Durban by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R4,300–R5,200, shown as its own line on your quote.

Setting up a crane on Durban's slopes

A load chart holds only on firm, level ground with the outriggers fully out. Much of coastal Durban sits on the Berea formation: old red sand dunes, steep in places, with little clay to bind them. Inland, the Pietermaritzburg shales weather into clay that turns slippery when wet. Both matter under an outrigger pad.

  • Load per pad: one outrigger of a 25 t crane can push down up to 26.9 t. On a 1.5 m × 1.5 m mat that's about 117 kPa; on a 1 m × 1 m mat, about 264 kPa. Loose sand and wet clay need the bigger mats.
  • Width: fully out, the outriggers span 6.6 m. Squeezed to 3.6 m on a narrow street, the lift at 10 m drops from 7.8 t to 3.2 t.
  • Edges: pads stay back from retaining walls, fresh cuts and stormwater pipes.
  • Rain: Durban's rain falls mostly from October to March; after a storm a sloping verge can be too soft. Agree how a washed-out day is handled when we quote.

Closing a Durban road for a lift

A crane or outriggers on a street or pavement needs eThekwini's permission and traffic control for the day. Under eThekwini's Excavations By-law a road closure needs its own application four weeks ahead, so apply once the lift date is set. We give you the footprint for it: about 6.6 m wide on full outriggers for the 25 t crane.

Which crane Durban jobs usually need

Typical Durban lifts and the crane that does them (manufacturer load charts, full outriggers)
LiftUsual machineWhy
Roof trusses on a hillside house, set from the street20–25 t craneLifts 2.15 t at 20 m; trusses are light
Rooftop aircon plant on a three- or four-storey block25 t or 40 t craneThe boom must clear the parapet; at 16 m the 40 t lifts 4.4 t against 3.45 t
Steel portal frame for a warehouse40 t or 80–90 t craneThe heaviest rafters land furthest out: the 80–90 t lifts 9.9 t at 20 m
Pump, tank or pallet near the gate8–10 t crane truckAbout 2.9 t at 9.9 m, and it carries the load in

Slings, shackles and the hook block (220 kg on the 25 t crane) count as load. Full charts: mobile crane hire. Light lifts around town: crane truck hire in Durban.

Certificates, rigger and banksman

Every crane we send has a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity not older than 12 months (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). As the user of a hired crane, you keep its test and service records in a register on site; we send copies beforehand, on request. The operator holds a certificate from an accredited training provider for the crane's class: C33 for hydraulic mobile cranes up to 50 t, C35 above that.

On a blind lift, over a house or into a factory bay, a banksman signals the operator and a rigger slings the load. If you don't have them, they go on your written quote as their own line. The full rules: safety and certificates.

Crane hire outside Durban

Up the coast, crane hire in Richards Bay covers the port and smelter town; for the other big port city on our list, see crane hire in Port Elizabeth. Every other machine in the city, from TLBs to lowbeds, is on plant hire in Durban, and towns across the province on plant hire in KwaZulu-Natal.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to hire a crane in Durban?

With a certified operator, excluding VAT: about R4,500 a day for 20–25 t, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t. Inside eThekwini travel is small; up the North Coast it's charged on the road distance.

Can a crane lift from the street onto a steep Berea or Bluff stand?

Usually, yes, if the crane can stand level on the road with its outriggers out. The load often lands 15–20 m away, so reach decides the size: the 20–25 t crane lifts 2.15 t at 20 m, enough for trusses; heavier items at that distance need the 40 t or bigger.

Do I need permission to put a crane in a Durban road?

Yes. If the crane or its outriggers stand on a street or pavement, you need eThekwini's permission and traffic control on the day. Apply early: under the municipality's Excavations By-law a road closure needs its own application four weeks ahead. We give you the crane's set-up footprint for the application.

Mobile crane or crane truck for a container in Durban?

An empty container that must be delivered anyway is crane-truck work: the truck carries it in and lifts it off. A loaded container, or one going over a wall or building, needs a mobile crane. The empty (tare) mass is printed on the doors; add the contents. See crane truck hire.
