Crane truck prices in Durban
Prices include the operator and exclude VAT. A crane holds less the further the boom reaches, so look at the lift at about 10 m.
| Class | Lift at about 10 m | Typical Durban job | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8–10 t | about 1.8–2.9 t | Empty containers, water tanks, aircon units, pallets | R2,500–R5,200 a day |
| 12–15 t | up to about 4.1 t | Steel beams, workshop machines, longer reach over a wall | R3,200–R5,200 a day |
| 20–34 t | up to about 6.2 t | Heavy machinery, long reach where a mobile crane won't fit | about R1,900 an hour |
The 8–10 t range runs from a Palfinger PK 18500 or similar (18.3 t·m, so at most about 1.8 t at 10 m) to a PK 32080 or similar, whose chart gives 2.9 t at 9.9 m. The bigger classes show the ceiling from the crane's lifting moment; the real chart is a little lower. Durban is one of the main centres we send machines from. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.

The Port of Durban is the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa and handles about 60% of South Africa's container traffic through the container terminals at Pier 1 and Pier 2. Behind it sit the logistics yards of Clairwood, the terminals along Solomon Mahlangu Drive and the Jacobs industrial area. That's where a crane truck earns its keep in Durban: empty containers onto sites as stores and offices, machines moved between workshops, and steel and spares offloaded where there's no forklift.
- Container mass: the tare is on the doors. An empty 6 m container at short reach is an 8–10 t job; a loaded one is not.
- Port traffic: thousands of heavy trucks use Solomon Mahlangu Drive every day, and queues back up when one breaks down. eThekwini's Integrated Freight and Logistics Strategy plans truck staging areas and a freight route by-law. Until then, we book early slots for yard jobs and need the yard's gate hours and access rules with your booking.
- Deck space: the crane sits behind the cab, so a 6 m container needs a long-deck truck. Tell us the length of the longest item and we confirm the deck in writing.
Steep stands, wet clay and summer storms
A crane truck must stand level on its stabilisers before it lifts. On a PK 18500 or similar they spread 4.8 m as standard and 6.6 m at most, so measure the width where the truck will stand. On the steep stands of the Berea, the Bluff and the western suburbs, the flattest spot is often the street.
Durban's rain falls mainly between October and March (South African Weather Service). After a storm, a loaded truck can't climb a muddy site road, and the pads must stay off fresh trench backfill, soakaways and manholes. Lifting also stops when lightning is close or gusts pass the crane's limit, so in summer we leave room in the day.
Lifting from a Durban street
- Check if the truck needs the road. Many lifts happen from a driveway or yard. If the truck or its stabilisers must stand in the road or on the pavement, you need eThekwini's permission and traffic control.
- Allow a month for a closure. Under the Excavations By-law, 2022, a road closure for works needs its own application four weeks before the road is closed. Plan any lift that shuts a lane on the same lead time.
- Look up. Nobody may bring the boom or the load inside a power line's safety clearance without permission from the utility that runs it (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19(5)). Ask eThekwini Electricity or Eskom for a switch-off or written clearance first.
Operator and load-test certificates
A truck-mounted crane is a lifting machine under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015. Ours have a performance (load) test by a registered lifting machinery entity no older than 12 months, and our operators hold a certificate of training for truck-mounted cranes from an accredited training provider. Because you're hiring the machine, you keep its latest test and service records on site (reg 18(7)(b)); we send copies before the truck arrives, on request. What each certificate means: safety and certificates.
Sizes Durban hires most, and further afield
The 8–10 t class does most Durban work: tanks, empty containers, aircon units and pallets within about 10 m of the truck. Steel for warehouses and heavier workshop machines go to 12–15 t. If the load is heavy at reach, a mobile crane is the better hire. Specs and the full reach chart: 8 ton crane truck hire and truck crane hire.
Up the North Coast: Ballito is about 50 km from Durban by road. Transport for a crane truck there and back usually comes to R4,300–R5,200, shown as its own line on your quote. Pinetown, Kloof and Hillcrest are on plant hire in Pinetown; every other machine we send in the city is on plant hire in Durban, and the rest of the province on plant hire in KwaZulu-Natal. We also run crane truck hire in Cape Town and crane truck hire in Johannesburg.

Can a crane truck lift a loaded container in Durban?
Usually not an 8–10 t one. An empty 6 m container is a normal crane truck job: its tare (empty) mass is printed on the doors. A loaded container is far heavier, so it needs the 20–34 t class (about R1,900 an hour) or a mobile crane. Send the tare, the contents mass and the drop-off distance; for heavy lifts see crane hire in Durban.
Do you send crane trucks to Umhlanga, Ballito and the South Coast?
Yes. Umhlanga and the suburbs are inside our normal Durban area. Further up the North Coast, travel to Ballito is about R4,300–R5,200 there and back; down the South Coast, Amanzimtoti is inside the normal area. Travel always shows as its own line on your quote.
How much is a crane truck per hour in Durban?
About about R1,000 an hour for an 8–10 t crane truck with operator. We have few hourly price points, so treat it as a guide. One delivery with a lift at each end is often cheaper by the hour; a day of offloading or placing steel is cheaper by the day at R2,500–R5,200.
