Scissor lift hire prices
Scissor lifts are priced machine only, excluding VAT. If nobody on your team holds a C53 certificate, we add a certified operator and confirm that line in writing. Delivery on a truck or trailer is shown separately.
| Size | Rate | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Electric scissor lift (6–12 m) | Per day, machine only | R1,000–R1,500 * |
| Rough-terrain diesel scissor lift (8–10 m) | Per day, machine only | R3,350–R3,700 * |
* Few price points for this one, so treat it as a guide; the exact price comes back on WhatsApp.
What moves the price inside the range: working height (a 10–12 m electric costs more than a 6–8 m one), electric or diesel, the number of days, delivery distance, and whether you add an operator. Weekly and monthly prices for shopfitting and fit-out contracts come back on WhatsApp.
Example: three days, electric scissor, in Sandton
Fitting ceiling boards and light fittings in a new office floor.
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Electric scissor lift (6–12 m), 3 days at R1,000–R1,500 a day machine only | R3,000–R4,500 |
| Transport both ways to Sandton | R1,300–R3,840 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R4,300–R8,340 |
Electric slab scissor or rough-terrain diesel?
Two families of scissor lift, built for different floors:
Electric slab scissor
Battery powered, so no fumes and little noise indoors, on solid tyres that are kind to finished floors. Narrow enough for doorways and aisles. Built for flat concrete (a "slab"), not gravel or mud. Our electric class covers 6–12 m working height.
Rough-terrain diesel scissor
A wider chassis, a diesel engine and 4x4 drive with lugged tyres, for building sites, yards and compacted ground. It carries more on a bigger deck, but it's too wide for most doors and its exhaust keeps it outside. Our rough-terrain class covers 8–10 m working height.
Common models make the sizes easy to read. On Genie slab scissors, the model number gives the deck height in feet and the width in inches: a GS-1930 has a 19 ft (5.79 m) deck and is 30 in (0.76 m) wide. Working height is the deck height plus 2 m, the reach of a person standing on it.
| Type | Typical model | Deck height | Working height | Width | Deck load |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small electric | Genie GS-1930 or similar | about 5.8 m | about 7.8 m | 0.76 m | 227 kg |
| Mid electric | Genie GS-2632 or similar | 7.96 m | 9.96 m | 0.82 m | 227 kg |
| Tall electric | Genie GS-3246 or similar | 9.78 m | 11.78 m | 1.18 m | 318 kg |
| Rough-terrain diesel | Genie GS-2669 RT or similar | 8.00 m | 10.00 m | 1.75 m | 680 kg |
What 227 kg means: two people with hand tools, or one person with tools and a box of fittings. Count everyone on the deck plus tools and material. The rough-terrain machine's bigger deck load suits crews carrying cladding, cable trays or ducting.
Will a scissor lift fit through the door?
Measure before you book. Three numbers decide it:
- Clear width of the opening: measure between the door stops, not the door leaf. A 0.76 m machine goes through most single doors; a 0.81 m machine through many. The 1.17 m tall electric needs double doors, a roller door or a goods entrance, and the 1.75 m rough-terrain machine needs a gate or roller door.
- Height of the opening: folded down, a GS-1930 or similar stands 2.12 m tall with its rails up and 1.76 m with the rails folded; a GS-2632 or similar 2.31 m and 1.94 m. Send the door height and we confirm the stowed height of the machine on your quote.
- The floor: even a small slab scissor weighs more than a tonne, carried on four small tyres. Check suspended slabs, mezzanines, raised access floors and goods lifts with the building's engineer or manager before the machine goes onto them. Ramps must be within the machine's slope rating.
Indoors, keep the route clear of floor drains, cable covers and open pits. The machine drives at height only on firm, level floors; on a slope it must be lowered.
What scissor lifts are hired for
Warehouses
High-bay lights, sprinkler lines, racking labels and roof sheeting repairs from inside. Narrow electric machines fit the aisles between racks.
Shopfitting and malls
Bulkheads, ceilings, signage and lighting in stores, often at night before the mall opens. Battery power means no fumes in a closed space.
Office fit-outs
Ceiling grids, aircon ducting, data cabling and fire detection, moving desk by desk across a floor.
Factories and workshops
Painting steel, cable trays, extraction ducting and overhead services, worked from a deck big enough for tools and material.
Halls, churches and venues
Lighting rigs, sound, banners and maintenance in high-ceilinged halls, where a ladder isn't safe and scaffold takes too long.
Building sites (rough terrain)
Soffits, cladding, steel connections and services on compacted ground or a slab still under construction.
Scissor lift, boom lift or cherry picker?
All three are mobile elevating work platforms; the difference is reach. A scissor lift goes straight up, so it must be parked right under the work. In return it gives you a large deck for two people and their material, and it drives along with them on it.
| Scissor lift | Boom lift | Cherry picker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moves | Straight up | Up and out, or up and over | Up and out from stabilisers |
| Best for | Ceilings and services over a flat floor | Facades and steel along a building on site | One spot reached from a road or driveway |
| Work area | Large deck with a roll-out extension | Basket | Basket |
| Typical price | R1,000–R1,500 a day, machine only | R2,600–R3,450 a day, machine only (12–16 m) | R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator (12–15 m) |
"Aerial lift" and "manlift" usually mean a boom lift. If the work sits over a canopy, a drop or parked cars, you need a boom lift or a cherry picker; if the spot is right above a flat floor, the scissor lift is simpler and costs less.
Certificates: operator and load test
A scissor lift is a lifting machine under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, listed in the National Code of Practice (Notice 5588 of 2024) as a mobile elevated work platform, code C53.
- Operator: nobody may operate it without a C53 certificate of training from an accredited training provider (reg 18(11)). The operator also carries a licence card valid for up to 24 months. If you hire the machine only, your operator must hold one; otherwise add ours.
- Load test: a thorough examination and performance test by a lifting machinery inspector of a registered lifting machinery entity at intervals of no more than 12 months (reg 18(5)(a)). Work platforms don't need a new test each time they move to a new site within that period (reg 18(5)(c)).
- Your register: if you use a hired machine, you keep a register on site with its latest performance test and service records, not older than 12 months (reg 18(7)(b)). We send copies before the machine arrives, on request.
- On a construction site: the Construction Regulations (reg 23) add a medical certificate of fitness and written authorisation for the operator, and a check of the machine before each day's use.
Outdoors, keep the machine and anyone on the deck clear of overhead power lines: nobody may come inside a line's safety clearance without permission from the utility that runs it (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19(5)). Many electric slab scissors are rated lower outdoors: a GS-2632 or similar goes to a 7.96 m deck indoors but only 5.79 m outdoors, and a GS-1930 to 4.47 m outdoors, while the wider GS-3246 works to full height outside. The rating is on the machine's plate, and the operator lowers the deck when the wind passes it. More on safety and certificates.
Small, 8 m, 10 m and table scissor lifts
Smallest scissor lift for hire
The narrowest common slab scissors are 0.76 m wide, with a deck at about 5.8 m. Micro scissors, such as the Genie GS-1432m or similar, reach 6.3 m working height (a deck of about 4.3 m) on a 0.81 m-wide machine and are lighter on floors that can't take a bigger machine. Send the door width and the ceiling height and we confirm the smallest machine that does the job.
8 m scissor lift hire
Ask whether the 8 m is the deck height or the working height. For a ceiling at about 7.5 m, the 19 ft class (about 7.8 m working height) is enough indoors. If you need to stand at 8 m, take the 26 ft class: deck 7.96 m, working height 9.96 m.
10 m scissor lift hire
For work at 9–10 m indoors, the 26 ft class reaches 9.96 m working height. For a little headroom above that, or more deck load, the 32 ft class gives 11.78 m and 318 kg on a 1.18 m-wide machine. Outdoors on rough ground, the rough-terrain diesel reaches 10 m with 680 kg on deck.
Scissor lift tables
A mobile or fixed scissor lift table is a different machine: a low table that lifts loads, not people, to working height in workshops and loading bays. Tell us the load, the table size and the lift height on WhatsApp and we confirm the price.
How scissor lift hire works
- WhatsApp the job: working height, indoor or outdoor, the floor, the door width, the town and the dates.
- We confirm in writing: the machine, the dates, the price, delivery as its own line, and an operator if you need one.
- Pay the deposit to book.
- Your scissor lift arrives charged or fuelled, with copies of its load-test certificate on request. If it breaks down, you get a replacement machine or no charge for the downtime.
We deliver scissor lifts across all 9 provinces; see local prices for plant hire in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Full steps are on how hiring works.
WhatsApp us the height and the floorQuestions people ask
How much does it cost to hire a scissor lift per day?
An electric scissor lift (6–12 m working height) is R1,000–R1,500 a day machine only and a rough-terrain diesel scissor (8–10 m) is R3,350–R3,700 a day, excluding VAT. Smaller electric machines sit toward the lower end of the range and 10–12 m machines toward the top. Delivery is R1,300–R3,840 there and back inside a main centre, and a certified operator is added on request. For a week or more, ask for the weekly price on WhatsApp.
Do I need a licence to use a scissor lift?
Yes. A scissor lift is a mobile elevated work platform, and under the Driven Machinery Regulations (reg 18(11)) nobody may operate one without a certificate of training (code C53) from an accredited training provider. If nobody on your team holds one, add our certified operator to the hire and your people simply do the work from the deck.
Which is better, a scissor lift or scaffolding?
For ceiling, lighting and services work that moves around a room or warehouse, a scissor lift: it arrives ready to work, goes straight up and drives to the next spot with people on the deck. Scaffolding wins for long jobs in one place, such as plastering a whole facade for weeks, on ground a scissor can't drive on, or where the work is higher than about 12 m. Many sites use both.
What's the difference between a scissor lift and a 2-post lift?
They are different machines. A 2-post lift and a scissor car lift are vehicle hoists bolted into a workshop floor to lift cars for repairs: the 2-post lifts the car on four arms and leaves the wheels and underside open, while a scissor car lift takes less floor space but covers part of the underside. A scissor lift for hire, on this page, is a mobile work platform that lifts people and their tools to work at height.
Is a scissor lift hydraulic?
Most are. The deck is raised by a hydraulic cylinder pushing the scissor arms apart, powered by batteries on electric machines and by a diesel engine on rough-terrain machines. That's why "hydraulic scissor lift hire" and "electric scissor lift hire" usually mean the same machine.
