Plant hire in Brits

Brits is the main town of Madibeng, on the N4 between Pretoria and Rustenburg. It has three kinds of work in one place: factories in the industrial area; farms downstream of Hartbeespoort Dam, which also supplies the Brits water treatment works; and chrome and platinum mining on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, the same rock as Rustenburg. Ground on the Bushveld rock can weather to expansive clay (black turf where it's dark), which swells when wet and cracks when dry, so engineers often want it dug out under slabs and replaced with compacted G5 gravel or better.

TLB hire in Brits

Factory yards and drainage, pipe and cable trenches, foundations on turf, and irrigation lines and farm-dam work along the river: R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry. A JCB 3CX or similar digs about 4.4–4.8 m deep. Where the turf comes out, add a 10 cube tipper (R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator) and a roller. Brits is about 53 km from Pretoria by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R4,560–R5,520, shown as its own line on your quote.

Crane truck and forklift hire in Brits

Moving machinery between factories, offloading steel and containers, and loading stock in the industrial area. An 8–10 t crane truck is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator; a 2.5–3 t forklift is R1,150–R1,600 a day and a 3.5–5 t R1,600–R1,900 a day, machine only, with our operator on request. Forklift transport there and back is R4,560–R5,520.

Excavator hire on Brits farms and mines

Farm dams, canal cleaning, bulk turf removal and mine contract work: a 20–25 t excavator is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator. It comes on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back. On a mine, the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 applies and the mine sets its own contractor rules, so send those with your booking. See dam building for farm dams.

Hartbeespoort

Hartbeespoort lies around the dam of the same name in the Crocodile River catchment, against the Magaliesberg. The work here is estates and lifestyle homes on the slopes, holiday houses and guest lodges near the water, roads inside estates, and boreholes and water lines on plots. On the slopes, rock is close to the surface: book the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) if you expect it. Near the water, check the floodline and the estate's or municipality's approval before any digging, and in an estate, sort out access and working hours with the estate office first. Hartbeespoort is about 39 km from Pretoria by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R3,360–R4,060, shown as its own line on your quote. More on TLB hire in Hartbeespoort.

Klerksdorp, Stilfontein and Orkney

Klerksdorp is the main town of the City of Matlosana, on the N12 between Johannesburg and Kimberley. Gold mining is the main economic activity in the district, around Klerksdorp, Stilfontein and Orkney, with farms beyond. That mix is why cranes and crane trucks are searched for here as often as TLBs.

Crane hire in Klerksdorp

Plant and conveyor parts at mines and silos, steel for sheds and workshops, and tank and pump lifts. A 20–25 t mobile crane is about R4,500 a day with operator and a 40 t about R7,600 a day with operator, with a certified operator and a load-test certificate not older than 12 months. On big lifts our team plans the set-up with you: ground, outrigger pads and overhead power lines. Klerksdorp is about 137 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R11,780–R14,240, shown as its own line on your quote. More on mobile crane hire.

TLB hire in Klerksdorp

Foundations and extensions, sewer and water connections, yard work at silos and workshops, and trenches on farms around the city: R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. Klerksdorp is about 137 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R11,780–R14,240, shown as its own line on your quote.

Crane truck hire in Klerksdorp

Offloading and moving machinery, containers and park homes, and placing water tanks on farms: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t and R3,200–R5,200 a day for 12–15 t. A crane truck loads, carries and offloads in one visit. Klerksdorp is about 137 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a crane truck there and back usually comes to R11,780–R14,240, shown as its own line on your quote.

Potchefstroom

Potchefstroom, the seat of JB Marks municipality, is a university town (North-West University's main campus) on the Mooi River, with farms around it. Work here is student housing and campus building, house extensions, municipal pipe work and farm jobs. The Council for Geoscience counts parts of Potchefstroom among the towns underlain by dolomite, the rock behind Gauteng's sinkholes, so ask whether your stand has a geotechnical report before planning deep trenches, and keep water out of open excavations. Potchefstroom is about 90 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R7,740–R9,360, shown as its own line on your quote. For bigger digs, a 20–25 t excavator is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator, and its lowbed there and back is R7,740–R9,500.

Mahikeng, Lichtenburg and Vryburg: the west of the province

West of Rustenburg the province turns into flat farming country, with less rain than the east. Distances are long, so transport is a big part of the price: a TLB drives to site, but to these towns it's a long drive there and back, and every kilometre is on your transport line. Group jobs into one longer booking where you can.

Mahikeng

Mahikeng is the capital of North West, close to the Botswana border. Much of the work is for government buildings, schools, clinics and roads, plus housing in Mahikeng and Mmabatho and cattle farms around them. Mahikeng is about 193 km from Rustenburg by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R16,600–R20,080, shown as its own line on your quote. A 140-class grader for farm and village roads is R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator; its lowbed there and back is R16,600–R20,080.

Lichtenburg

Lichtenburg, in Ditsobotla, is a farming town that boomed with the alluvial diamond diggings proclaimed north of town from 1926. Jobs here are grain-silo and farm work, plant maintenance, and foundations in town. Lichtenburg is about 139 km from Rustenburg by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R11,960–R14,460, shown as its own line on your quote. For lifts at silos and works, a 20–25 t crane is about R4,500 a day with operator, and its transport there and back is R11,960–R14,460.

Vryburg

Vryburg, in Naledi, is a farming town in the far west of the province. Farm work dominates: dams and drinking troughs, pipelines from boreholes, firebreaks and farm roads. Vryburg is about 204 km from Kimberley by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R17,540–R21,220, shown as its own line on your quote. For bigger dams and clearing, a D6-class dozer is R5,000–R7,750 a day with operator; its lowbed there and back is R17,540–R21,220. See dam building and site clearing.

Rustenburg and the platinum belt

Rustenburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. Platinum and chrome mines along the N4 hire water trucks, excavators, side tippers and TLBs by the month, and expansive clay shapes many building jobs. In 2022, chrome buyers trucked material from Rustenburg to Maputo to get around rail and port backlogs, which is why 34 t side tippers (R75,500–R92,000 a month with operator) work here on monthly contracts. Machines hired across North West

Crane hire in North West

about R4,500 a day for 20–25 t, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t, with operator. Under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, a lifting machine needs a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity at least every 12 months, and its operator a certificate from an accredited training provider. On farms and silos, check the distance to overhead power lines before the crane sets up. Rates by size: crane hire rates.

Forklift truck hire in North West

R940–R1,600 a day for 1–2 t, R1,150–R1,600 for 2.5–3 t and R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only, with our operator on request. Factories in Brits, mine stores in Rustenburg and grain and fertiliser stores in Klerksdorp and Lichtenburg hire them most. Forklift transport to Rustenburg is R1,300–R3,840 there and back. See forklift hire.

Generator hire in North West

Site power before a connection is live, backup for shops and farms, irrigation pumps, and events. A portable generator up to 10 kVA is R320–R520 a day, 15–30 kVA R680–R1,600, 40–60 kVA R2,300–R3,050 and 80–150 kVA R2,400–R4,600, machine only. Generator transport to Rustenburg is R1,300–R3,840 there and back. Every size: generator hire rates.

Side tippers, water trucks and graders

For mines, quarries and farm roads: a 34 t side tipper with driver is R75,500–R92,000 a month with operator, a 14,000–18,000 litre water truck R2,400–R2,800 a day with operator, and a 120-class grader R3,900–R4,400 a day with operator. See side tipper hire and mining plant hire.

Choosing a plant hire company in North West: what to check

  1. Transport in writing. Out of town it can be a big part of the bill, so it must be its own line, both ways.
  2. Price confirmed before the machine moves, with minimum hours, standing time and diesel (wet or dry) written out.
  3. Certificates for lifting machines: a load test not older than 12 months and a certified operator.
  4. Mine paperwork sorted before arrival if the job is on a mine.
  5. Breakdown terms. Ours are a replacement machine or no charge for downtime.
  6. Wayleave and service positions sorted before digging in a road reserve.

How booking works: how it works. Certificates on request: safety and certificates.

Questions people ask

Where do machines for North West towns come from?

Rustenburg is one of our main centres, and towns in the east of the province are close to Pretoria and the Vaal:

  • Brits is about 53 km from Pretoria by road
  • Hartbeespoort is about 39 km from Pretoria by road
  • Klerksdorp is about 137 km from Vereeniging by road
  • Potchefstroom is about 90 km from Vereeniging by road

Mahikeng and Lichtenburg are priced from Rustenburg and Vryburg from Kimberley. Transport both ways is always its own line on your quote.

Is transport expensive for towns far from Rustenburg?

It is a bigger share of the price the further out you are. A TLB drives to site: to Brits that's R4,560–R5,520 there and back, but to Mahikeng it's R16,600–R20,080. On a one- or two-day job that can be more than the hire itself, so group the work into one longer booking where you can. A 5-day TLB hire is R19,500–R25,750 before transport.

Do I need a wayleave to dig in a North West town?

Yes, for any trench or excavation in a road reserve, such as across a verge or pavement. Apply to your local municipality first: Madibeng for Brits and Hartbeespoort, Rustenburg, City of Matlosana for Klerksdorp, JB Marks for Potchefstroom, Mahikeng, Ditsobotla for Lichtenburg, or Naledi for Vryburg. Inside your own boundary no wayleave is needed, but find the underground services before we dig.

When is the rainy season in North West?

Summer. The South African Weather Service notes that summer rain normally falls between October and March, and that rainfall in South Africa is heaviest in the east and decreases westward. So Brits and Hartbeespoort get more storms than Mahikeng and Vryburg. Bulk earthworks go fastest from April to September.
