TLB hire in Hartbeespoort
Last updated
Hartbeespoort TLB prices and transport
The hire rate is the same as in the city: R3,900–R5,150 a day with an operator, R320–R410 an hour dry, or R5,000–R6,550 a day with a hydraulic breaker for the rocky slopes. What Harties adds is the drive from Pretoria. Hartbeespoort is about 39 km from Pretoria by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R3,360–R4,060, shown as its own line on your quote.
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard 4x4 TLB (about 8 t), 3 days at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator | R11,700–R15,450 |
| Transport both ways to Hartbeespoort | R3,360–R4,060 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R15,060–R19,510 |
Travel is charged once each way, so group the work into one booking: footings, a septic tank and a driveway on the same visit cost less than three separate trips. Hours and standing time are explained on TLB hire rates.

Estates
House pads, pools, service trenches and estate roads in Pecanwood, The Island Estate, Lakeland, West Lake, Magalies Golf Estate and River Club, Leloko and Eagles Landing. A TLB (JCB 3CX or similar) is 2.35 m wide over its front bucket and needs about 3.3 m once its stabilisers are down, so it fits most estate gates and driveways.
The older lakeside towns
Schoemansville, Kosmos, Ifafi, Meerhof and Melodie have older stands on slopes above the water: retaining walls, sewer connections, drains and extensions.
Plots and smallholdings
Water lines from the borehole, stables, sheds, gravel driveways and septic tanks on the plots towards Skeerpoort.
Municipal and community work
Water, sewer and stormwater trenches where Madibeng is upgrading services, and connections for new housing.
The services backlog in Madibeng's own plans
The Hartbeespoort Area Precinct Plan (2014) lists the ward needs raised for Madibeng's 2013/14 Integrated Development Plan, and most of them are trench work:
- Upgrading the sewage works and pump stations at Rietfontein, Ifafi and Schoemansville.
- Replacing old asbestos water pipes in Ifafi, Melodie and Meerhof, and a new 10 Ml reservoir in Meerhof.
- Water, sewerage and formalisation for the informal settlements at Ten Rooms, Refentse and Sunway Village.
- Upgrading gravel roads in Struben, Rietfontein and Melodie, and kerbs and stormwater drains along the R511.
On a pipe-replacement job, the TLB digs beside the old line; asbestos-cement pipe that is exposed is handled under the asbestos rules by people registered for that work, not broken out with a bucket.
Rules on the Magaliesberg slopes and at the water's edge
Hartbeespoort lies against the Magaliesberg, which was declared a protected natural environment in 1994 and became a Protected Environment under the Protected Areas Act in 2003. Madibeng's precinct plan puts these in its very high sensitivity zone, where development is kept to land that is already disturbed:
- Ridges steeper than 5 degrees and larger than 5 hectares.
- Riparian zones, wetlands and the dam edge, where even farming must stay outside 100 m of a dam's shoreline.
- Red-data species habitat and critical biodiversity areas.
So before a TLB cuts into a slope or digs near the shoreline, check the approved building plan and any environmental conditions on the property. If the conditions say "no disturbance beyond the footprint", our operator works inside pegs you set.
Ground and weather at Harties
On the Magaliesberg slopes and the stands that climb them, rock sits close to the surface: book the breaker TLB from the start rather than paying for a second visit. On flatter ground the soil can be expansive clay (black turf) that swells when wet, and engineers often want it removed under slabs, which adds tippers and a roller.
Summer rain falls between October and March, and the South African Weather Service notes that rainfall is heaviest in the east and drops off westward, so Hartbeespoort gets more storms than towns further west in North West. Keep trenches short in storm season and agree standing time on the quote.
All North West towns: plant hire in Brits and North West. Where the TLB comes from: plant hire in Pretoria and TLB hire in Pretoria. Along the N4 west: TLB hire in Rustenburg. Specs and operators: TLB hire.

Do the estates around Hartbeespoort Dam allow TLBs?
Yes, on their terms. Each estate sets its own working hours, contractor registration and gate access, and some limit heavy vehicles on their roads. Get the estate office's approval and the gate list sorted, then send them to us with the booking so the operator is on the list.
Who issues wayleaves in Hartbeespoort?
Madibeng Local Municipality, for any trench in a road reserve, such as a sewer or water connection across the verge. Inside your own boundary no wayleave is needed, but mark the pipes and cables you know of before the TLB starts.
Can I dig close to the dam?
Check first. Madibeng's planning treats riparian areas and wetlands as a sensitive zone and keeps even farming outside 100 m of a dam's shoreline. Get the municipality's or the estate's approval in writing before any trench, footing or retaining wall near the water.
