Crane truck hire in the Western Cape

A crane truck carries the load and lifts it off at the other end, so one machine replaces a truck plus a crane for deliveries up to a few tonnes. In the Western Cape it does a lot of the work that falls between a bakkie and a mobile crane:

  • Port-side industry: machinery, steel and containers moved between workshops in Paarden Eiland, Maitland and Epping.
  • Farms and cellars in the Boland: steel for packsheds, tanks, irrigation pumps and cold-room panels around Paarl, Wellington and Worcester.
  • Building sites: roof trusses, prefab rooms, precast elements and water tanks across the northern suburbs and the Helderberg.

Which crane truck size

Crane truck sizes and prices, excl. VAT
SizeTypical Western Cape jobPrice
8–10 tTrusses, tanks, a small generator, pallets of steelR2,500–R5,200 a day with operator
12–15 tContainers, prefab units, heavier machinery, longer reach over a wallR3,200–R5,200 a day with operator
20–34 tHeavy plant moves and long-reach lifts where a mobile crane won't fitabout R1,900 an hour with operator

The tonnage is the crane's rating close in. At full reach it lifts far less, so send us the weight of the heaviest item and how far it must go from where the truck can stand. We'll pick the size that does it with a margin.

Certificates and wind

A crane truck is a lifting machine under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015. It must be load-tested by a registered lifting machinery entity at least every 12 months, the operator must hold a certificate from an accredited training provider, and on a hired machine the user keeps the latest test and service records on site. We send copies before the truck arrives. Lifts also stop when the wind passes the crane's limit, and in Cape Town that usually means the summer south-easter, so book windy-season lifts for the morning.

Western Cape weather, ground and permits

Winter rain, June to August

The South African Weather Service describes the south-western Cape as a winter-rainfall region that gets most of its rain in June, July and August. That flips the Gauteng calendar: plan bulk earthworks, dam work and tipper-heavy jobs for October to April. In winter, allow for standing time and keep trenches open for as short a time as possible.

Sand on the Cape Flats, rock on the slopes

Most of metropolitan Cape Town sits on the Cape Flats Aquifer, an extensive sandy, unconfined aquifer. Loose sand won't hold a vertical trench wall, so deeper trenches there need the sides battered back or shored, and loaded tippers need firm access in wet months. Up on the mountain slopes and the Boland's vineyard hillsides it's the opposite: stony ground where a breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) or an excavator with a breaker saves days.

Wayleaves in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town Wayleaves By-law, 2026 says excavation, trenching, clearing or boring on City property, including road reserves, needs a wayleave. The holder registers on the City's Wayleave Management System and the contractor then gets a permit to work. The City must have at least five working days' notice before work starts, and work must start within 90 days of issue. The City's road-reserve standards add practical limits:

  • Trial holes up to 600 mm deep can go on a Miscellaneous Permit; deeper ones need a wayleave.
  • Open trenching in the road reserve runs between 09:00 and 15:30, outside peak traffic.
  • Open trenches are backfilled the same day and reinstated within 7 days.

Outside the metro, apply to the local municipality: Stellenbosch, Drakenstein (Paarl and Wellington), Breede Valley (Worcester) or George.

Cape Town's industrial areas and northern suburbs

These areas are all inside the City of Cape Town, so the wayleave rules above apply. The city page covers the rest of the metro: plant hire in Cape Town.

Paarden Eiland

Cherry picker hire in Paarden Eiland

Paarden Eiland is the industrial strip between the N1 and the harbour, full of high-roofed warehouses, workshops and showrooms. Cherry pickers here fix roof sheeting and gutters, hang signage and service high-bay lights. A 12–15 m machine is R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator; for roofs above that, 16–17 m is R4,150–R7,900 a day. Paarden Eiland is about 6 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. Transport for a cherry picker there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote.

Maitland

Crane truck hire in Maitland

Maitland's industrial side borders Paarden Eiland and the rail yards, with engineering workshops, panel shops and storage. Crane trucks move machines between workshops, deliver steel and offload containers: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t. Maitland is about 8 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.

Epping

Epping Industria is one of Cape Town's main industrial areas, next to the city's fresh produce market, with food, packaging and distribution businesses.

Bobcat hire in Epping

Cleaning out yards, loading rubble and spreading sand or G5 on hardstands: R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator, or R3,000–R3,600 a day with operator with a broom, breaker or auger. Epping is about 15 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. Transport for a bobcat there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote.

Forklift hire in Epping

Peak-season and stock-count forklifts for warehouses: R1,150–R1,600 a day for 2.5–3 t, or R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only. Tell us if you need our operator as well. Transport there and back is R1,300–R3,840.

Stikland

Cherry picker hire in Stikland

Stikland's industrial area sits next to Bellville in the northern suburbs, with factories, warehouses and trade outlets. Cherry pickers here handle roof repairs, signage and lighting at height: R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator. Stikland is about 28 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. Transport for a cherry picker there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote.

Brackenfell

Crane truck hire in Brackenfell

Crane trucks deliver prefab rooms, trusses, tanks and precast walls, and move machinery between factories: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator. Brackenfell is about 31 km from Cape Town by road. Transport for a crane truck there and back usually comes to R2,660–R3,220, shown as its own line on your quote.

Durbanville

Digger loader hire in Durbanville

A digger loader is what the Western Cape often calls a TLB. Durbanville's work runs from new estates and townhouse developments to wine farms on the Durbanville hills: house foundations, service trenches, dam clean-outs and farm roads. R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. Durbanville is about 29 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.

The Helderberg and the Boland: Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, Worcester

The Cape Winelands produce nearly 70% of South Africa's wine. The district has about 80,000 hectares under cultivation and irrigation, growing wine and table grapes, deciduous fruit and vegetables, and its factories mostly turn grapes and fruit into wine, juice, brandy and dried and tinned fruit. So Boland plant hire means farm dams, packshed and cellar builds, irrigation trenches, and forklifts in packhouses and cold stores.

Somerset West

Somerset West is in the City of Cape Town's Helderberg area, between False Bay and the Hottentots Holland mountains, with steady house building and estate developments.

Plant hire and equipment hire in Somerset West

Most Somerset West bookings are for one machine with an operator: a TLB or bobcat on a house site, or a cherry picker for a roof. For equipment hire, small plant such as plate compactors (R270–R370 a day) and concrete mixers (R370–R470 a day) come machine only. See compressor, breaker and mixer hire.

Digger loader hire in Somerset West

Foundations, pool digs, retaining walls on sloping stands and trenches: R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. On the slopes towards the mountain, expect rock and book the breaker. Somerset West is about 47 km from Cape Town by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R4,040–R4,880, shown as its own line on your quote.

Forklift hire in Somerset West

Forklifts for warehouses, builders' yards and farm stores: from R940–R1,600 a day for 1–2 t, machine only. Transport there and back is R4,040–R4,880.

Site power and power for weddings and events on Helderberg farms: 15–30 kVA is R680–R1,600 a day and 40–60 kVA R2,300–R3,050, machine only. Transport there and back is R4,040–R4,880.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is a university town in the heart of the winelands, with its own municipality, so wayleaves go through Stellenbosch rather than Cape Town.

Digger loader hire in Stellenbosch

Trenches for irrigation and services on wine farms, cellar and tasting-room foundations, and student-housing builds in town. Stellenbosch is about 52 km from Cape Town by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R4,480–R5,400, shown as its own line on your quote.

Generator hire in Stellenbosch

The Garden Route: George

George is the Garden Route's biggest economy, producing about 40% of the district's output in 2024. Its airport handled close to 820,000 passengers that year, and forestry is one of the district's strengths. George is one of the centres we send machines from, covering Mossel Bay, Knysna and Oudtshoorn as well.

Plant hire in George

George hires TLBs for house building and services in new suburbs, excavators and tippers for earthworks and road work, and crane trucks for timber and industrial deliveries. A TLB is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator and drives to site inside George. The coast gets rain outside the summer months too, so keep a few days in hand on earthworks.

Questions people ask

What is a hiab truck?

A hiab truck is a crane truck: a flatbed truck with a folding (knuckle-boom) crane behind the cab. The name comes from the crane brand that made them common, and in the Western Cape people use it for any truck-mounted crane. It loads, carries and offloads in one visit. Ours run from R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t. See crane truck hire.

Do you send machines outside Cape Town?

Yes. Cape Town and George are the centres we send machines from, and we work across the Boland, the West Coast (Malmesbury, Saldanha), the Overberg (Hermanus) and the Garden Route (Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn). Outside a main centre, transport is priced on the road distance and shown as its own line.

Do I need a wayleave to dig in Cape Town?

Yes, for any excavation, trenching or clearing on City property, which includes road reserves. Under the City of Cape Town Wayleaves By-law, 2026 you apply on the City's Wayleave Management System, then the contractor gets a permit to work. Works may not start before both are issued. Shallow trial holes up to 600 mm can go through a Miscellaneous Permit instead.

When is the rainy season in the Western Cape?

Winter. The South African Weather Service describes the south-western Cape as a winter-rainfall region that gets most of its rain in June, July and August. Bulk earthworks and tipper work go fastest from October to April. George and the Garden Route sit outside the summer-rainfall belt too, so plan for wet days there in any season.
