Cape Town forklift hire by the day, week and month

The Port of Cape Town handles about 80% of South Africa's deciduous fruit exports, Transnet says, and the peak comes in November and December, the same weeks the wind closes the port most often. Last season there were 32 days of wind above 100 km/h in those two months, and ships can't be loaded once the wind passes 90 km/h, the Transport Minister said in August 2026. Fruit waits in cold stores and reefer depots until the wind drops, then has to move fast.
That is when Cape Town needs extra forklifts: electric trucks inside the cold rooms, LPG or diesel trucks on the yards and loading bays. Transnet's own season plan looks at an extra holding facility for export reefer containers, and depots near the port fill up too.
- Packhouses in the Winelands: Stellenbosch is about 52 km from Cape Town by road. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R4,480–R5,400, shown as its own line on your quote. Paarl is about 61 km from Cape Town by road, so a forklift there and back is R5,240–R6,340.
- Over the mountains: the Breede Valley's packhouses and cold stores around Worcester. Worcester is about 111 km from Cape Town by road. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R9,540–R11,540, shown as its own line on your quote. On a long hire the transport is shared over the weeks.
Warehouses in Epping, Paarden Eiland and the northern suburbs
Year-round work sits in the industrial areas close to the city: Epping is about 15 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area, and Paarden Eiland is about 6 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. Bellville and the northern suburbs add distribution centres, builders' merchants and factories. Before the forklift arrives, measure three things:
- Aisles: a 2.5 t counterbalance truck (Hyster H2.5A or similar) has a 2,263 mm turning radius and a 3 t truck 2,374 mm, so the aisle must allow for that plus the pallet.
- Doors and mezzanines: the mast lowered stands about 2.6–2.7 m high.
- Racking: capacity falls with height. A 2 t truck lifts its full 2,000 kg to 4.2 m but only 1,770 kg at 5.5 m. Send the top beam height and the heaviest pallet that goes up there.
For narrow-aisle racking a reach truck (code F5) fits where a counterbalance truck can't turn: exact price on WhatsApp. Types explained in our forklift guide.
Winter rain, wind and yard surfaces
Most of Cape Town's rain falls in June, July and August (South African Weather Service), so wet yards are a winter problem here, the opposite of the inland cities. In summer, the wind is the risk: empty bins, crates and packaging sheets catch it when raised, so the operator travels with the load low and stops stacking outdoors in strong gusts. On the sandy yards of the Cape Flats, a counterbalance forklift's small, hard tyres sink; hire a rough-terrain forklift (code F11) instead.
Whoever drives needs a certificate of training for that type of forklift from an accredited training provider (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18(11)), and the forklift needs a load test not older than 12 months. We send copies on request: safety and certificates.

How much does forklift hire cost in Cape Town?
R940–R1,600 a day for a 1–2 t forklift, R1,150–R1,600 for 2.5–3 t and R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only and excluding VAT. Delivery inside the metro is R1,300–R3,840 there and back; the operator, if you want ours, is priced on WhatsApp.
Can I hire a forklift for the whole fruit season?
Yes. Book before November, give us the start and end dates, and ask for the monthly rate: about R30,000 a month on a 3.5–5 t, with the smaller sizes priced on WhatsApp. A month at the 3.5–5 t day rate would be R35,200–R41,800 for 22 days.
Do you hire electric forklifts for cold stores?
Yes. Electric forklifts give off no exhaust, so they suit sealed cold rooms and packhouses. Tell us the shift length, the room temperature and the lift height so the battery and mast suit the job.
