Mining equipment for hire, by the month
Every machine comes with an experienced operator or driver. Mines and mining contractors hire from us to add capacity for a contract, cover a peak, replace a machine that's down, or run a whole load-and-haul fleet without buying it.

Where a machine shows a day rate, the monthly rate is quoted in writing for your hours and shifts. Some of these are priced from few data points, so the exact figure is confirmed on your quote. More rates: plant hire rates.

Every term below is written on your quote before a machine is allocated.
| Item | How it works |
|---|---|
| Rate basis | Yellow machines are usually priced per month on about 200 machine hours, with extra hours at the rate on your quote. Side tippers and tippers are priced per truck per month with a driver. |
| Operators and drivers | Experienced and certified, one per machine on the shift pattern agreed; a second operator for double shifts is quoted as its own line. |
| Diesel | Dry (you supply or pay for the diesel) or wet (diesel in the rate). The 200-hour prices on this page are dry. |
| Breakdowns | A replacement machine on breakdown, or no charge for the downtime. |
| Standing time | How waiting time, weather days and stoppages are charged is set out on the quote. |
| Transport | Lowbed transport to site and back is its own line on the quote; trucks drive themselves. |
| Booking | A deposit to book the machines for your start date, with the balance on the payment terms in the contract. |
| Documents | Company documents on request for your vendor registration and safety file; copies of operator certificates before the machine arrives, on request. |
As an example, five 34 t side tippers with drivers for one month come to R377,500–R460,000. Here is a worked example for a 30 t excavator with operator for three months near Kathu in the Northern Cape, with lowbed transport both ways from Kimberley:
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| 30 t excavator, 3 months at about R65,000 a month with operator | R195,000 |
| Transport both ways to Kathu | R24,760–R29,960 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R219,760–R224,960 |

Medicals, induction and the safety file
The Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 defines an employee as any person employed or working at a mine, so our operators and drivers work under your mine's health and safety system from the first day.
- Medicals: section 13 of the Act requires the employer to run medical surveillance of employees exposed to health hazards, made up of an initial medical examination and further examinations at appropriate intervals. Our operators attend your mine's medicals before the first shift.
- Induction: each operator completes your site induction before working.
- Appointment as a TMM operator: the mandatory code of practice for trackless mobile machines (TMM) requires mines to have procedures for selecting, training and appointing TMM operators in writing, site by site, with records kept. Copies of operator certificates and training records for your appointment process come on request.
- Safety file: company documents and the documents your safety file needs are available on request before the machines arrive.
More on operator certificates and load tests: safety and certificates.
Opencast mining work our machines do
Load and haul
An excavator loading ADTs in the pit, or side tippers at the loading point, is the backbone of most opencast and quarry contracts. Match the excavator size to the trucks so neither waits. See ADT hire and side tipper hire.
Haul roads and dust
A grader keeps haul roads smooth and drained, and a water truck keeps the dust down for visibility and health. Dust is regulated: see dust suppression.
Stockpiles and the plant
Front end loaders and bulldozers manage run-of-mine and product stockpiles, feed the plant and load trucks at the weighbridge.
Rehabilitation and dams
Bulldozers and excavators reshape dumps, replace topsoil and build or raise water and tailings dam walls. See dam building.
Mining contractors in Mpumalanga, Rustenburg, the Northern Cape and Limpopo
Mining contractors in Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga sits on the coal-bearing Karoo Basin, so most mining hire there is for coal: load-and-haul in the pits, haul road maintenance, and side tippers moving coal by road. eMalahleni (Witbank) is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for an ADT there and back usually comes to R6,000–R9,500, shown as its own line on your quote. See mining plant hire in eMalahleni (Witbank) and plant hire in Mpumalanga.
Mining contractors in Rustenburg
Rustenburg's mines work the Bushveld Complex, known for platinum-group metals and chrome. Excavators, loaders and side tippers for chrome are the usual hires. Rustenburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for an excavator there and back usually comes to R6,000–R9,500, shown as its own line on your quote. See plant hire in Rustenburg and North West.
Mining contractors in the Northern Cape
The Northern Cape's iron ore and manganese mines around Kathu, Postmasburg and Kuruman are long hauls from the main centres, so lowbed transport matters on short contracts and spreads thin on long ones. Kathu is about 288 km from Kimberley by road. Transport for an excavator there and back usually comes to R24,760–R29,960, shown as its own line on your quote. See plant hire in the Northern Cape.
Limpopo: Steelpoort and Burgersfort
The eastern side of the Bushveld Complex around Steelpoort and Burgersfort is chrome and platinum country. Steelpoort is about 150 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for an excavator there and back usually comes to R12,900–R15,600, shown as its own line on your quote. See plant hire in Limpopo.
WhatsApp us your mining contractQuestions people ask
What machines do mining contractors hire?
On opencast mines and quarries the core fleet is load-and-haul: excavators of 30 t and up loading ADTs or side tippers. Around them work front end loaders on stockpiles, bulldozers on dumps and rehabilitation, graders and water trucks on the haul roads, and TLBs for drains and general work. Side tippers carry coal, chrome and aggregate on public roads.
How does monthly plant hire work for mines?
Yellow machines (excavators, ADTs, graders, TLBs) are usually priced per month on about 200 machine hours, with extra hours at the rate on your quote. Trucks such as side tippers are priced per truck per month with a driver. Diesel (wet or dry), shifts, standing time and transport both ways are all written into the contract before a machine moves.
Do your operators have mine medicals and induction?
Our operators and drivers attend your mine's medicals and induction before the first shift, and work under your site's appointment and traffic rules. Copies of operator certificates come before the machine arrives, on request.
Is diesel included in monthly mining hire?
Either way, agreed in writing. "Dry" means the operator is included and you supply or pay for the diesel. "Wet" means diesel is in the rate. The 200-hour monthly prices on this page are dry rates.
Can you send a formal quote and company documents for procurement?
Yes. Use the long-hire quote form or email info@basaltplanthire.co.za with the machines, numbers, months and site. The formal quote comes back by email, and company documents for your vendor registration are available on request.
