|---|---|---|
| Mobile crane, 20–25 t | Pumps, motors, steel beams, tanks | about R4,500 a day |
| Mobile crane, 40 t | Heavier plant, roof steel at reach | about R7,600 a day |
| Mobile crane, 80 t | Large plant parts, long reach over structures | about R22,000 a day |
| Crane truck, 8–10 t | Deliver and place in one trip | R2,500–R5,200 a day |
| Crane truck, 12–15 t | Containers, machinery, precast | R3,200–R5,200 a day |
| Crane truck, 20–34 t | Heavy loads that also need carrying | about R1,900 an hour |
Welkom is about 171 km from Bloemfontein by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R14,700–R17,780, shown as its own line on your quote. A crane truck comes the same way, at about R14,700–R17,780 there and back, and carries the load as well as lifting it. On a job of several days the crane stays in Welkom, so the transport is paid once.
What Welkom lifts
Welkom is the centre of the Free State goldfields. Harmony lists Free State goldfields mines among its underground operations, Tshepong, Joel and Target 1 among them, plus surface operations that reclaim gold from old dumps. Around the mines are engineering workshops, steel yards and transport depots. Crane work is pumps, motors and winder parts in and out of workshops, conveyor and plant sections, steel for sheds and structures, and tanks and transformers set onto plinths.
Which crane: three numbers decide it
Send the heaviest load's weight, the radius (the distance from where the crane stands to where the load is set down) and the height it must clear. A crane's capacity falls fast as the radius grows, so a 20–25 t crane lifts its full rating only close in. For a few tonnes near a road, a crane truck is cheaper; for heavier loads at reach or over a building, the 40 t or 80 t. We check the lift against the crane's own load chart before we price it. Sizes and charts: mobile crane hire; every size and rate: crane hire rates.
Lifting rules on site
Under regulation 18 of the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, a lifting machine needs a performance (load) test by a registered lifting machinery entity at least every 12 months, and a power-driven lifting machine rated over 5,000 kg must have a load indicator. Its operator must hold a certificate from an accredited training provider. Mines add their own rules on top, so send them when you book. Tell us whether your team has a trained rigger to sling the load; if not, ask for one with the crane and it is added to the written price. More on safety and certificates.

Where your machine comes from
The Free State is worked from three directions. Welkom and the south come from Bloemfontein; Sasolburg, Parys, Kroonstad and Bethlehem from Vereeniging, across the Vaal; and Harrismith from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal. Transport is priced on the road distance from that centre.
| Town | Sent from | Road km | TLB transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sasolburg | Vereeniging | 24 | confirmed on WhatsApp |
| Parys | Vereeniging | 60 | R5,160–R6,240 |
| Kroonstad | Vereeniging | 141 | R12,120–R14,660 |
| Welkom | Bloemfontein | 171 | R14,700–R17,780 |
| Harrismith | Newcastle | 190 | R16,340–R19,760 |
| Bethlehem | Vereeniging | 206 | R17,720–R21,420 |
Summer is storm season. The South African Weather Service places the rain in this part of the country between October and March, mostly as afternoon thunderstorms that soften clay, bog down loaded tippers and stop crane set-ups on wet ground. Winters are dry with frost, the best months for bulk earthworks and road building.

Welkom, Odendaalsrus and Virginia
Beyond crane work, the goldfields towns hire TLBs (R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator) for sewer and water connections, house extensions and foundations, graders (R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator) for gravel roads on mine land and farms, and water trucks for dust on haul roads. Welkom is flat, so access is easy, but clay ground turns soft after summer storms: crane outriggers go on pads on firm, dry ground. Welkom is about 171 km from Bloemfontein by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R14,700–R17,780, shown as its own line on your quote.
TLB hire in Bethlehem
Bethlehem is the main town of the eastern Free State, farming country of maize, wheat and cattle that rises towards the sandstone hills around Clarens and the Maluti mountains on the Lesotho border. TLB work here is farm dams and their spillways, pipelines from boreholes and dams, foundations for sheds and grain stores, kraals, and houses and extensions in town and in Bohlokong. A TLB costs R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry. Where the hillside ground is sandstone, a breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) saves a second trip. Bethlehem is about 206 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R17,720–R21,420, shown as its own line on your quote. For bigger dams, an excavator (R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator) moves more earth per day: see dam building.
Kroonstad
Kroonstad sits on the N1 between Gauteng and Bloemfontein, on the Vals River, with railway yards, grain silos and the farms of the northern Free State around it. Work here is crane trucks (R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator) for farm and depot deliveries, forklifts for warehouses and agricultural co-op stores, and TLBs for municipal and housing trenches. Kroonstad is about 141 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R12,120–R14,660, shown as its own line on your quote.
Sasolburg
Sasolburg is a refinery and chemicals town: Sasol's Natref crude oil refinery is here, making diesel, petrol and jet fuel, alongside Sasol's chemical plants. Maintenance shutdowns bring contractors who need cherry pickers (R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator for 12–15 m, R4,150–R7,900 a day for 16–17 m), crane trucks, scissor lifts and generators. Inside a refinery fence, the plant's permit-to-work system decides when and where any engine may run, so send the site requirements with the booking. Sasolburg is about 24 km from Vereeniging by road, inside our normal delivery area. Transport for a cherry picker there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. The Vaal side of the river is on plant hire in Vereeniging.
Harrismith
Harrismith is the Free State's town on the N3, the main road between Gauteng and Durban, with truck stops, fuel depots and distribution yards along it. The Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone was launched in 2017 at Tshiame, Harrismith, on 1,038 hectares beside the N3. Work here is forklifts for warehouses (a 3.5–5 t machine is R1,600–R1,900 a day, machine only), crane trucks for factory installs, and TLBs and graders for industrial stands. Harrismith is about 190 km from Newcastle by road. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R16,340–R19,760, shown as its own line on your quote. KwaZulu-Natal detail: plant hire in Newcastle.
Parys
Parys lies on the Vaal River inside the Vredefort Dome, declared a World Heritage Site in 2005. The dome is the remaining ring of an impact crater about 2,000 million years old; what is left is about 45 km across. Work here is guest houses and riverside homes: bobcats (R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator) for landscaping and driveways, TLBs for water lines and septic tanks, and mini excavators for tight riverbank plots. Riverside ground is often wet, so plan digs for the dry months, and check with Ngwathe municipality whether a new build near the river needs extra approval. Parys is about 60 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a bobcat there and back usually comes to R5,160–R6,240, shown as its own line on your quote.
Bloemfontein: the Free State's main centre
Bloemfontein sends machines to Welkom, Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu and the farms of the southern and central Free State. City detail is on Bloemfontein plant hire, with mobile crane hire in Bloemfontein and TLB hire in Bloemfontein.
Wherever the job is, the price is confirmed in writing before the machine moves, showing transport both ways, minimum hours and standing time. A deposit books the date. If a machine breaks down, you get a replacement or no charge for the downtime. How a booking runs: how it works.

How much does crane hire in Welkom cost?
A 20–25 t mobile crane is about R4,500 a day with operator, a 40 t about R7,600 a day and an 80 t about R22,000 a day, each with a certified operator. The crane drives from Bloemfontein, so transport there and back is about R14,700–R17,780, shown as its own line. For loads of a few tonnes close to where a truck can park, an 8–10 t crane truck (R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator) is often the cheaper machine.
Can your cranes work on the Welkom mines?
Yes. Each mine runs its own contractor requirements, such as inductions, medical fitness, permits to work and its own lifting procedures, so send them with the booking. Under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, the user of a hired lifting machine keeps a register on site with its latest load test and service records, not older than 12 months; we send copies of those and the operator's certificate before the crane arrives, on request.
How far is Bethlehem, and what does a TLB cost there?
A TLB is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator with an operator, the same as anywhere. Bethlehem is about 206 km from Vereeniging by road, so transport there and back is about R17,720–R21,420. On a job of a week or more, that one transport line is spread across every day of work.
Who issues a wayleave in Free State towns?
Your local municipality: Matjhabeng for Welkom, Odendaalsrus and Virginia; Dihlabeng for Bethlehem; Moqhaka for Kroonstad; Metsimaholo for Sasolburg; Maluti-a-Phofung for Harrismith; and Ngwathe for Parys. Bloemfontein is Mangaung. Get it before the booking date for any trench in a road reserve, and have the underground service positions on site when the machine arrives.
