Bobcat hire in Newcastle
A bobcat (skid steer loader) is a small loader that turns on the spot, so it works in yards, between buildings and through gates a TLB can't use. A standard machine (Bobcat S450 or similar) weighs about 2,365 kg, is 1.58 m wide over the bucket and tips into a truck from a dump height of 2.16 m.
What a bobcat does on Newcastle jobs
- Clearing stands and yards in Madadeni, Osizweni and the suburbs: rubble, old foundations and builders' waste loaded straight into a tipper.
- Factory and warehouse yards in the industrial areas: sweeping, cleaning out spillage and moving material around.
- Paving and driveways: boxing out, spreading and levelling G5 or crusher run before the plate compactor.
- Breaking out concrete with the hydraulic breaker, and drilling post holes for palisade fencing with the auger.
Bobcat prices and transport
R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator, R190–R370 an hour for short jobs, or R3,000–R3,600 a day with an attachment. The bobcat comes on a trailer. Newcastle is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a bobcat there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. Its safe bucket load is 608 kg, so for heavy pallets book a forklift instead. Sizes, attachments and specs: bobcat hire.
Newcastle: steel, coal and northern KZN ground
What Newcastle builds
Newcastle is the main town of northern KwaZulu-Natal and the seat of Newcastle Municipality in the Amajuba District, on the N11 between Ladysmith and Mpumalanga. It grew as an industrial town around its steelworks, chosen in 1969 for ISCOR's third integrated steel plant and later run by ArcelorMittal South Africa, and around clothing and textile factories in its industrial areas. The steelworks stopped production in November 2025 and the long-steel business is in care and maintenance, so steady work now comes from the factories, the coalfield, farms and housing. The country around it is coal country: the northern KZN coalfield runs from Dannhauser and Utrecht to Dundee and Vryheid. So the work here mixes factory maintenance, mine and farm earthworks, and housing in Madadeni, Osizweni and the town's suburbs.
Hard rock and clay
Northern KZN has a lot of dolerite: hard, dark rock in boulders and sheets that a bucket can't dig. Between the rock, the ground weathers into clay that is hard as brick in a dry winter and sticky after summer storms. Two consequences for your hire: book a breaker (on a bobcat, TLB or excavator) where rock is likely, and compact clay backfill in thin, damp layers.
Cold winters, summer storms
Newcastle is in the summer-rainfall part of South Africa: the South African Weather Service notes that rain normally falls between October and March, mostly in afternoon thunderstorms here. Winters are dry and cold with frost, which is good earthmoving weather but slow for concrete and asphalt layers. Plan big cut-and-fill and gravel roads for April to September.
Wayleaves in Newcastle
A trench in a road reserve or servitude needs a wayleave from Newcastle Municipality before work starts. If a crane truck must stand in the street to lift, ask the municipality about the road and traffic control early.
Earthmoving equipment hire in Newcastle
Excavator hire in Newcastle
For bulk earthworks, deep sewer and stormwater lines, foundations for industrial buildings and mine and farm dams: a 20–25 t excavator (CAT 320 or similar) is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator or R340–R690 an hour, and a 30 t about R4,500 a day. Fitted with a breaker, it's the machine for dolerite. It comes on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back in the Newcastle area. See excavator hire rates.
Mini excavator and mini digger hire in Newcastle
A mini excavator (mini digger) is a small tracked digger of 1.5–6 t, from 0.98 m to 1.96 m wide, digging 2.2 to 4.0 m deep depending on size. It fits through side gates and works inside buildings and on finished sites without wrecking the ground. R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator. It comes on a trailer, R1,300–R3,840 there and back. See mini excavator hire.
Dozer hire in Newcastle
Bulk clearing, pushing up dam walls, stockpile work at coal and quarry sites, and cut-and-fill for building pads: a D6-class bulldozer (CAT D6 or similar) is R5,000–R7,750 a day with operator, and a D8-class about R8,200 a day. A dozer moves on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back in the Newcastle area. See bulldozer hire.
Grader hire in Newcastle
Farm and mine roads, township gravel roads, and layerworks for new streets and yards: a 120-class grader is R3,900–R4,400 a day, a 140-class (CAT 140 or similar) R4,500–R6,000, or R490–R610 an hour for short jobs. Summer storms cut ruts and scour drains, so road maintenance before and after the rainy season is the steady work. See gravel roads and driveways.
Roller hire in Newcastle
A 10–12 t roller is R2,150–R5,600 a day with operator, or R260–R620 an hour dry, for road and yard layerworks behind the grader. A small 1.5–3 t roller is R1,050–R1,800 a day with operator for driveways and paths, and a padfoot roller is the one for clay: ask on WhatsApp. Rollers over 3 t come on a lowbed. See roller and compactor hire.
Lifting and access machines in Newcastle
Every lifting machine we send has a load-test certificate not older than 12 months, and its operator a certificate from an accredited training provider, as the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 require. Mobile cranes have their own page: crane hire in Newcastle.
Crane truck hire in Newcastle
Delivering and placing steel, machinery, containers, water tanks and prefab rooms, and moving equipment between workshops: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t, R3,200–R5,200 a day for 12–15 t, or about R1,000 an hour for a short lift. Newcastle is one of the main centres we send machines from. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. See crane truck hire.
Forklift hire in Newcastle
Stock moves and peaks in factories and warehouses: 1–2 t is R940–R1,600 a day, 2.5–3 t R1,150–R1,600 and 3.5–5 t R1,600–R1,900, machine only, with our operator on request. For a month, the 3.5–5 t is about R30,000. Newcastle is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. See forklift hire.
Scissor lift hire in Newcastle
Ceilings, lighting, ducting and racking inside factories and shops: an electric scissor lift (6–12 m) is R1,000–R1,500 a day; a diesel rough-terrain one (8–10 m) for outdoor work on yards is R3,350–R3,700 a day, machine only. It needs a firm, level floor. Transport there and back is R1,300–R3,840. See scissor lift hire.
Boom lift hire in Newcastle
Where you must reach up and over, such as roof edges, steel structures and tall plant, a boom lift does it: 12–16 m articulating is R2,600–R3,450 a day and 16–22 m diesel articulating R4,000–R5,450, machine only. For a 20 m+ telescopic boom, or with our operator, ask on WhatsApp. See boom lift hire.
Trucks, power and compressors in Newcastle
Flatbed truck hire in Newcastle
Flatbeds carry steel, pipes, timber, containers and machinery between Newcastle, the coalfield and Gauteng. We price them per job: exact price on WhatsApp. The price depends on the deck length, the weight, the route and whether lifting is needed at either end; if it is, a crane truck may do both. See flatbed truck hire.
Generator hire in Newcastle
Site power before the connection, backup during outages and power for events: up to 10 kVA R320–R520 a day, 15–30 kVA R680–R1,600, 40–60 kVA R2,300–R3,050 and 80–150 kVA R2,400–R4,600, machine only, diesel extra. Transport there and back is R1,300–R3,840. See generator hire rates.

WhatsApp your Newcastle jobQuestions people ask
Can a bobcat lift a pallet of bricks?
Only a light one. A standard bobcat (Bobcat S450 or similar) has a rated operating capacity of 608 kg, half its tipping load. A full pallet of bricks or paving is often heavier than that. For pallets, hire a forklift (2.5–3 t is R1,150–R1,600 a day, machine only) or a crane truck that offloads and places them.
Do you send machines to Madadeni and Osizweni?
Yes. Both are next to Newcastle, inside our normal delivery area, so a bobcat costs the same R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator and transport on its trailer is R1,300–R3,840 there and back. Machines that drive themselves, such as tippers and crane trucks, have small travel costs.
Do I need a wayleave in Newcastle?
Only for digging in a road reserve or municipal servitude, such as a trench across a verge for a water or sewer connection. Apply to Newcastle Municipality before the machine is booked, and have the positions of underground services ready. Work inside your own property line doesn't need a wayleave.
What does a plant hire company in Newcastle supply?
We supply the machine and an experienced operator, with transport as its own line, the price in writing before the machine moves, a replacement machine or no charge for downtime if it breaks, and copies of operator and load-test certificates before the machine arrives, on request.
