Working in Pietermaritzburg: industry, hills and storms
The capital and the N3
Pietermaritzburg is KwaZulu-Natal's capital and the seat of Msunduzi Municipality, on the N3 between Durban and Gauteng. Its work splits three ways. Factories and warehouses in Willowton and Mkondeni, and Hulamin's aluminium rolling mill, hire cranes, crane trucks and forklifts. Government buildings, schools and the older city centre need cherry pickers for roofs, gutters and signage. And the suburbs keep growing, east along the N3 at Ashburton and Lynnfield Park and north-west up the hill to Hilton, which means TLBs, bobcats and compactors.
Shale and clay on the slopes
The city gives its name to the Pietermaritzburg Formation, the shale that underlies much of the city and the hills towards Durban. Near the surface it weathers into clay that turns very slippery when wet. Fresh shale breaks out in slabs, so a TLB digs it, but a footing that hits unweathered rock may need the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator). On the clay, compact backfill in thin layers with a rammer, because a plate bounces on wet clay instead of compacting it.
Summer thunderstorms
Pietermaritzburg is in the summer-rainfall part of the country: the South African Weather Service notes that rain normally falls between October and March. In the city that rain comes mostly as afternoon thunderstorms, which can stop a crane lift or a cherry picker job when wind and lightning arrive. Book lifts for the morning in summer, and keep clay access roads graded so tippers and crane trucks don't get stuck after a storm.
Msunduzi wayleaves
Any trench in a road reserve or municipal servitude, such as a water or sewer connection across a verge, needs a wayleave from Msunduzi Municipality before work starts. If a crane or crane truck must stand in a street to lift, ask the municipality about occupying the road and any traffic control well before the lift date.
Lifting machines in Pietermaritzburg
Every lifting machine we send has a performance (load) test by a registered lifting machinery entity not older than 12 months, and its operator holds a certificate from an accredited training provider, as the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 require. Copies come before the machine, on request. More on safety and certificates.
Crane hire in Pietermaritzburg
Machinery installs in the Willowton and Mkondeni factories, steel frames for warehouses along the N3, roof trusses and water tanks: a 20–25 t mobile crane is about R4,500 a day, a 40 t about R7,600 a day and an 80 t about R22,000 a day, with operator. Size the crane by radius, not by the load alone: a 25 t crane (Tadano GR-250N or similar) lifts 7.8 t at 10 m but only 2.15 t at 20 m. On clay, the outriggers need firm, dry ground and proper mats, away from trenches and fresh fill. Pietermaritzburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. See mobile crane hire and crane hire rates.
Crane truck hire in Pietermaritzburg
When the load must be delivered and lifted in one trip, such as a container, a generator, steel or precast, a crane truck does both: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t, R3,200–R5,200 a day for 12–15 t, or about R1,000 an hour for a short lift. It's also the usual machine for placing farm tanks and prefab rooms in the Midlands. Pietermaritzburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. See crane truck hire.
Cherry picker hire in Pietermaritzburg
Gutters, roof repairs, signage, lighting and painting on the older buildings in the city centre, school halls and factory fronts: a 12–15 m cherry picker is R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator, and a 16–17 m R4,150–R7,900 a day, with a certified operator. For a month of maintenance work, the monthly rate is R32,500–R37,000 for 12–15 m. It comes on a truck, R1,300–R3,840 there and back in the city. See cherry picker hire.
Forklift hire in Pietermaritzburg
Stock peaks, stocktakes and moves in the Willowton and Mkondeni warehouses: a 1–2 t forklift is R940–R1,600 a day, 2.5–3 t R1,150–R1,600 and 3.5–5 t R1,600–R1,900, machine only. Add our operator if your staff aren't certified for that forklift: a forklift is a lifting machine, so its operator needs a certificate from an accredited training provider. For longer hires, the 3.5–5 t is about R8,500 a week or about R30,000 a month. Pietermaritzburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. See forklift hire rates.
Generator hire in Pietermaritzburg
Generators cover site power before the connection is live, backup for factories and offices during outages, and power for events. We size the set from what it must run: send the main loads (motors, pumps, kilns, aircons) and whether they start together.
| Size | Typical use in Pietermaritzburg | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 kVA, portable | Power tools and lights on a building site | R320–R520 |
| 15–30 kVA | A house, a small shop, a marquee | R680–R1,600 |
| 40–60 kVA | Offices, small workshops, events | R2,300–R3,050 |
| 80–150 kVA | Factories, schools, construction sites | R2,400–R4,600 |
| 200–300 kVA | Production lines and large buildings | R8,500–R9,750 |
Diesel is extra. Small units come on a bakkie or trailer; big sets on a truck, R1,300–R3,840 there and back in the city. Rates for every size up to 1,000 kVA: generator hire rates.

How much is TLB hire in Pietermaritzburg?
A standard 4x4 TLB with an operator is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry (operator included, you pay the diesel). Pietermaritzburg is one of our main centres, so the TLB drives to site and travel is small. Full detail: TLB hire in Pietermaritzburg.
Do I need a wayleave to dig in Pietermaritzburg?
Only for work in a road reserve or municipal servitude, such as a trench across the verge to connect water or sewer. Apply to Msunduzi Municipality before the machine is booked. Up the N3 in Hilton and Howick, apply to uMngeni Municipality. On your own property you don't need a wayleave, but you still need the positions of underground services before we dig.
What is small plant hire?
Small plant is the equipment that comes without an operator and is light enough to deliver on a bakkie or trailer: plate compactors, rammers, electric breakers, concrete mixers and portable generators. Our small plant day rates start at R270 for a plate compactor, machine only.
Do you work in the Midlands outside Pietermaritzburg?
Yes. Machines go out from Pietermaritzburg to Hilton, Howick, Mooi River, Estcourt, Richmond and the farms in between, with transport priced on the road distance. For example, Estcourt is about 93 km from Pietermaritzburg by road.
