TLB hire in Pietermaritzburg

A TLB with an operator costs R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator in Pietermaritzburg, or R320–R410 an hour on dry hire, which means our operator is in the rate and you cover the diesel. We send TLBs out from Pietermaritzburg itself, so inside Msunduzi there is no lowbed and only a small travel line, and the full price comes back in writing on WhatsApp.

How much to rent a TLB per hour in Pietermaritzburg?

R320–R410 an hour dry for a standard 4x4 TLB (JCB 3CX or similar). Hourly bookings carry a minimum, so most PMB jobs are booked by the day.

  • Per day, with operator: R3,900–R5,150 for an 8 to 9 hour day.
  • Per hour, operator included: R320–R580, depending on the minimum hours and who pays the diesel.
  • Breaker TLB, per day: R5,000–R6,550, for hard shale, old concrete and tar.
  • About 200 machine hours in a month, dry: about R68,000.

Digging the Pietermaritzburg shale

The city gives its name to the Pietermaritzburg Formation, the shale under much of the town and the hills down towards Durban. A TLB meets it in two states:

Weathered, near the surface

It has turned to clay. The bucket goes through it easily, but when it's wet it sticks, and access tracks turn slippery. Backfill goes back in thin layers under a rammer (R350–R470 a day), because a plate compactor bounces on wet clay instead of compacting it.

Fresh, deeper down

Unweathered shale breaks out in slabs. The standard bucket lifts loose plates, but a footing or trench that runs into solid shale goes faster with the breaker TLB booked from the start.

Rain falls mainly between October and March (South African Weather Service), and in Pietermaritzburg much of it comes as afternoon thunderstorms. Start early, open only what you can backfill that day, and agree standing time for storm afternoons on the quote. Before anyone steps into a trench, its sides must be shored, braced or sloped back unless a competent person has confirmed in writing that the ground will stand (Construction Regulations, 2014, regulation 13).

Other machine prices people ask about in Pietermaritzburg

What is the hourly rate for a 20 ton excavator?

R340–R690 an hour with an operator, or R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator. A Cat 320 or similar digs about 6.7 m deep against the TLB's 4.45 m, so it takes over on deep sewer lines, big cut-and-fill pads on the clay and slips after storms. It comes on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back in the city. See 20 ton excavator hire.

How much to hire a crane truck per day?

R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for an 8–10 t crane truck with a certified operator. It places water tanks, pipes and manhole rings that a TLB shouldn't hang from its bucket: a TLB lifting a suspended load counts as a lifting machine under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015. See crane truck hire.

What sector is plant hire?

Construction. In Pietermaritzburg the same machines also work for factories in Willowton and Mkondeni, for municipal water and sewer jobs, and on Midlands farms and plantations.

Smaller than a TLB

For side passages and back gardens a TLB can't reach (it needs about 3.3 m with its stabilisers down), a mini excavator is R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator, and a bobcat R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator for loading and levelling.

All machines in the city: plant hire in Pietermaritzburg. The province: plant hire in KwaZulu-Natal. Down the N3 to the coast: TLB hire in Durban; up it to Gauteng: TLB hire in Johannesburg. Specs and certificates: TLB hire.

Questions people ask

Who issues wayleaves for digging in Pietermaritzburg?

Msunduzi Municipality, for any trench in a road reserve or municipal servitude, such as a water or sewer connection across the verge. In Hilton and Howick it is uMngeni Municipality. Work inside your own boundary needs no wayleave, but the positions of underground services are needed before the TLB digs.

Is a week of TLB hire better value than single days in PMB?

Usually, because the machine travels once. Five days with an operator come to R19,500–R25,750 before VAT. For a month of steady work, a block of about 200 machine hours is about R68,000 dry.

What should be ready before the TLB arrives?

Pegs or paint marking the dig, the depth you need, the known pipe and cable routes, a place for the spoil (or a tipper booked), and a gate of about 3 m. On clay sites, a gravel-topped access track saves a lost day after a storm.
