TLB for hire in Johannesburg: what it costs
The standard machine is a 4x4 TLB (JCB 3CX or similar) with an experienced operator. All prices exclude VAT.
- R3,900–R5,150 a day, for an 8 to 9 hour day.
- R320–R410 an hour dry, operator included, with a minimum number of hours.
- R5,000–R6,550 a day with a hydraulic breaker, for old slabs, tar and the quartzite ridges.
- R19,500–R25,750 for a five-day week, the usual booking for a house's footings, services and backfill.
Johannesburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. How minimum hours, standing time and monthly blocks work: TLB hire rates.

Booysens, Ormonde, Turffontein, Mondeor and the smallholdings out towards Eikenhof sit along the old gold reef, with mine dumps, reclaimed mine land, industrial yards and suburbs side by side. That shapes the TLB work:
- Factory and yard repairs: the breaker TLB lifts cracked concrete, then the bucket digs out the soft spot underneath and loads it.
- Fill in the first metre: on reclaimed and older ground the bucket often brings up rubble, ash and old foundations rather than natural soil. Get an engineer's view before building on reclaimed mine land.
- Smallholdings: water lines from boreholes, stables, sheds and gravel driveways, with a grader for the longer roads.
Ridges, granite and reef: what the bucket meets
| Where | Ground | Book |
|---|---|---|
| Ridges through the middle: Parktown, Hillbrow, Northcliff | Hard quartzite, often within a metre | Breaker TLB, or an excavator with a hammer for long runs |
| Northern suburbs: Sandton, Randburg, Fourways | Residual granite soil that can collapse when wetted under load | Standard TLB plus a compactor: footings go deeper or the soil is recompacted in layers |
| The south and the reef | Mine land, fill and rubble | Breaker on standby; tippers for the waste |
University of Pretoria research names collapsing granite soils as a hazard in the fast-growing northern parts of Johannesburg, which is why engineers there often ask for the TLB to dig out and recompact rather than simply dig footings.
Where a TLB fits in Johannesburg, and where it doesn't
Soweto
House extensions, backyard rooms, strip footings and sewer connections on standard stands: one TLB digs the footing, loads the spoil and backfills on the same visit. Soweto is about 18 km from Johannesburg by road, inside our normal delivery area. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
Sandton and the northern suburbs
Pool digs and extensions behind houses in Bryanston and Morningside, service trenches, and backfill around basements. In an estate or complex, sort out access and working hours with the body corporate before the booking date. Sandton is about 19 km from Johannesburg by road, inside our normal delivery area. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
The inner city
In the CBD, Braamfontein and Doornfontein, stands are tight. The TLB needs about 3.3 m of width with its stabilisers down; a bobcat (about 1.6 m over the bucket, R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator) or a mini excavator (R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator) often does the job instead. For whole buildings, see demolition.
Storms and the JRA
Johannesburg's rain falls between October and March (South African Weather Service), mostly in short, heavy afternoon storms that flood open trenches. In summer our operators dig in the morning, keep trench lengths short and backfill the same day where the job allows; agree standing time when you book.
Any trench into a pavement, verge or street is road-reserve work, controlled by the Johannesburg Roads Agency through wayleaves and its Code of Practice. Inside your boundary no wayleave is needed, but water, sewer, electricity and fibre run under many stands: mark what you know, and open anything uncertain by hand before the bucket goes near it.

Can the TLB also get rid of the rubble?
The TLB loads it; a tipper takes it away. A 6 cube tipper is R1,250–R1,900 a load in Gauteng, and a 10 cube tipper with driver R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator. The TLB's front bucket holds about 1 m³, so a 6 cube load takes about six buckets. Rubble has to go to a licensed disposal site.
Do I need a JRA wayleave for a sewer or water connection?
Yes, if the trench crosses the pavement, verge or street. The Johannesburg Roads Agency controls all work in the road reserve through its wayleave process, and the work must follow its Code of Practice. Apply before you book the TLB and keep the approved wayleave on site.
Do you send TLBs to Fourways and the northern edge of the city?
Yes. Fourways is about 33 km from Johannesburg by road, so travel both ways is on its own line, usually R2,840–R3,440. Closer suburbs such as Sandton and Randburg are inside our normal delivery area.
