Get an Eastern Cape price on WhatsAppLong distances and rural roads: what transport costs
The Eastern Cape is big, and outside Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City the towns are far apart. We send machines from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and East London, and the transport line is worked out on the road distance from whichever is closer.
| Town | Sent from | Road km | TLB transport, there and back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kariega (Uitenhage) | Gqeberha | 37 | R3,180–R3,840 |
| Qonce (King William's Town) | East London | 60 | R5,160–R6,240 |
| Jeffreys Bay | Gqeberha | 82 | R7,060–R8,520 |
| Makhanda (Grahamstown) | Gqeberha | 128 | R11,000–R13,320 |
| Komani (Queenstown) | East London | 187 | R16,080–R19,440 |
| Mthatha | East London | 226 | R19,440–R23,500 |
| Graaff-Reinet | Gqeberha | 260 | R22,360–R27,040 |
Spread the transport over more days
On a one-day job in Mthatha or Graaff-Reinet, getting the machine there and back costs more than the day's hire. Group the work into one booking instead: a TLB for five days is R19,500–R25,750 in hire, and the transport is charged once. This worked example shows a five-day booking in Mthatha:
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard 4x4 TLB (about 8 t), 5 days at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator | R19,500–R25,750 |
| Transport both ways to Mthatha | R19,440–R23,500 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R38,940–R49,250 |
Gravel roads and the last few kilometres
Most provincial roads in the Eastern Cape are gravel. In its 2006/07 policy speech the provincial roads department counted about 38,400 km of gravel road against 5,200 km surfaced, with roughly two-thirds of the gravel in poor condition. In practice that means the last stretch to a farm, village or game lodge is often a rutted track. TLBs, tippers, graders and crane trucks drive it; excavators, rollers and bulldozers arrive on a lowbed that needs a firm road and room to turn and offload. Tell us about drifts, low-level bridges and steep climbs before booking, so the right truck goes and nothing is turned back at the gate.
When the rain comes
The South African Weather Service notes that all of South Africa except the south-western and southern parts relies on summer rain. Inland Eastern Cape towns such as Komani, Mthatha and Graaff-Reinet get their rain mostly in summer storms, which turn clay roads slippery and fill trenches. On the southern coast around Gqeberha and Jeffreys Bay, wet days come in any season. Ask about standing time when we quote outdoor work.
Inland from East London: Qonce, Komani and Mthatha
TLB hire in King William's Town (Qonce)
Qonce sits on the Buffalo River inland from East London, part of Buffalo City and right beside Bhisho, where the provincial government sits. TLB work here is extensions and new houses in Zwelitsha and Ginsberg, sewer and water connections, foundations for government and school buildings, and yards in the Dimbaza industrial area to the west. A TLB costs R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry, and digs a trench about 4.4–4.8 m deep (JCB 3CX or similar) while its front bucket backfills. Qonce (King William's Town) is about 60 km from East London by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R5,160–R6,240, shown as its own line on your quote. Digger hire in Queenstown (Komani)
Komani is the main town of the Chris Hani district, on the N6 between East London and Bloemfontein, with cattle and sheep farms all round it. A "digger" can mean three machines, and we send the one that fits:
- TLB (R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator): trenches, foundations, septic tanks and loading, on stands in town and on farms. It drives to site.
- 20–25 t excavator (R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator): farm dams, deep pipe trenches and bulk digs. It comes on a lowbed, so it pays for itself on jobs of several days.
- Mini excavator (R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator): narrow trenches between buildings and in back yards.
Komani (Queenstown) is about 187 km from East London by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R16,080–R19,440, shown as its own line on your quote. The lowbed run for an excavator is in the same range: R16,080–R19,440. For a farm dam, see dam building.
Plant hire in Mthatha
Mthatha is the commercial centre of the former Transkei, on the N2 between East London and KwaZulu-Natal, and home to Walter Sisulu University. Around it, homes are built in rural villages reached by gravel roads, so work here is house foundations, water and sanitation trenches, and access roads. For roads, a 140-class grader is R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator, with a water truck (R2,000–R2,300 a day with operator) and a 10–12 t roller (R2,150–R5,600 a day with operator) behind it; the full method is on gravel roads and driveways.
North-east of Mthatha, near Lusikisiki and Mbizana, SANRAL's N2 Wild Coast Road is building two large bridges, over the Msikaba and Mtentu gorges; both were still under construction in 2026. The Mtentu bridge is designed with a 260 m main span and a height of about 223 m, and the new route will be about 69 km shorter than the current N2. Mthatha is about 226 km from East London by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R19,440–R23,500, shown as its own line on your quote.
Around Gqeberha: Makhanda, Kariega, Jeffreys Bay and Graaff-Reinet
Plant hire in Makhanda (Grahamstown)
Makhanda is a university and school town on the N2 between Gqeberha and East London, with Rhodes University at its centre and farms and game reserves around it. TLBs dig foundations, water connections and septic systems; crane trucks (R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator) place water tanks on stands and deliver steel to farms; cherry pickers (R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator) service gutters, lights and facades on university and school buildings. Makhanda (Grahamstown) is about 128 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R11,000–R13,320, shown as its own line on your quote.
Plant hire in Kariega
Kariega (Uitenhage) is part of Nelson Mandela Bay, the closest town to Gqeberha on this page. Volkswagen's car plant and its component factories hire forklifts (R1,150–R1,600 a day for 2.5–3 t, machine only) and crane trucks for moving machinery, while TLBs dig for new homes in KwaNobuhle and the surrounding suburbs. Kariega (Uitenhage) is about 37 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) by road. Transport for a crane truck there and back usually comes to R3,180–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. City detail: plant hire in Port Elizabeth.
Plant hire in Jeffreys Bay
Jeffreys Bay, in Kouga, builds holiday homes, complexes and pools on sandy coastal ground. A bobcat (R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator) moves and levels sand and loads rubble; a mini excavator digs pool and sewer trenches in tight yards. In loose sand, trench sides slump, so lay pipes and backfill the same day and compact in layers with a rammer (R350–R470 a day). Jeffreys Bay is about 82 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) by road. Transport for a bobcat there and back usually comes to R7,060–R8,520, shown as its own line on your quote.
Plant hire in Graaff-Reinet
Graaff-Reinet is the Karoo town of the province, encircled by the Camdeboo National Park and surrounded by sheep and game farms. Farm work means dams, pipelines from boreholes, kraals and farm roads. The koppies and cliffs here are dolerite, hard rock that stops a standard bucket, so on rocky ground book the TLB with a breaker (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) from the start. At 260 km from Gqeberha, this is the town where grouping work into a week matters most. Graaff-Reinet is about 260 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R22,360–R27,040, shown as its own line on your quote.
Crane truck hire in the Eastern Cape
Crane trucks are the lifting machine most hired outside the two cities, because one truck loads, drives the distance and sets the load down with a certified operator. An 8–10 t crane truck is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, a 12–15 t R3,200–R5,200 a day, and the 20–34 t class about R1,900 an hour.
Farms
Water tanks onto stands, pumps, steel for sheds, and feed and fencing material, from Komani to Graaff-Reinet.
Factories and zones
Machinery moves and container offloading in Kariega, the Coega zone and the East London IDZ.
Building sites
Roof trusses, precast panels and prefab rooms in Mthatha, Makhanda and Qonce.
Capacity falls with reach: an 8–10 t class crane such as a Palfinger PK 18500 or similar lifts far less at the end of its boom than close to the truck, so send the load weight and the distance from where the truck parks. Every crane truck carries a load-test certificate not older than 12 months under the Driven Machinery Regulations. Komani (Queenstown) is about 187 km from East London by road. Transport for a crane truck there and back usually comes to R16,080–R19,440, shown as its own line on your quote. For heavy lifts at reach, see crane hire in East London and crane hire in Port Elizabeth; for sizes, crane truck hire.

WhatsApp your Eastern Cape jobQuestions people ask
Do you send machines to farms and villages on gravel roads?
Yes. TLBs, tippers, graders and crane trucks drive the last stretch of gravel themselves; excavators and rollers come on a lowbed, which needs a road it can climb and a flat place to turn and offload. Send a map pin and photos of the access road, including any river crossings, low bridges or steep sections, and we plan the delivery before we price it.
What does it cost to get a TLB to Mthatha or Graaff-Reinet?
Transport for a TLB to Mthatha and back is about R19,440–R23,500, because Mthatha is about 226 km from East London by road. To Graaff-Reinet it is about R22,360–R27,040: Graaff-Reinet is about 260 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) by road. The day rate stays R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, so the longer the booking, the smaller the transport share of each day.
Who issues a wayleave outside Gqeberha and East London?
The local municipality that owns the road: King Sabata Dalindyebo for Mthatha, Enoch Mgijima for Komani, Makana for Makhanda, Kouga for Jeffreys Bay and Dr Beyers Naudé for Graaff-Reinet. Qonce falls under Buffalo City and Kariega under Nelson Mandela Bay. Work in the reserve of a provincial road needs the provincial roads department's approval, and on a national road such as the N2 or N6, SANRAL's. Inside your own boundary no wayleave is needed, but find the underground services first.
Is plant hire more expensive in small Eastern Cape towns?
The hire rate isn't: a TLB is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator in Komani or Makhanda just as in Gqeberha. What changes is the transport line, priced on the road distance from Gqeberha or East London. Booking several days in one go, or two machines for the same trip, keeps it down.
