Crane hire in East London

Crane hire in East London costs about R4,500 a day with operator for a 20–25 t mobile crane with a certified operator, about R7,600 for a 40 t and about R22,000 for an 80 t, excluding VAT. If the load is light and has to be delivered anyway, an 8–10 t crane truck at R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator does both jobs, and we confirm the price in writing before anything moves.

East London is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. Because we have few price points for mobile cranes, the rate is confirmed for your actual lift, in writing, once you send the weight, the reach and the date. A river port, a car plant and the IDZ

The Port of East London sits at the mouth of the Buffalo River and is the only commercial river port on South Africa's coast. Mercedes-Benz South Africa's assembly plant is linked by a private bridge to a four-level car terminal beside the quay, and the East London Industrial Development Zone runs an automotive park where component makers serve the Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Ford, Isuzu and Nissan plants. That shapes the crane work here:

  • Factory installs and moves in the IDZ: presses, moulds, compressors and production machines into and out of buildings, often through roof openings or wide doors.
  • New factory buildings: steel columns and rafters, crane beams and roof sheeting, usually with the 40 t or 80–90 t because of the reach across a bay.
  • Port-side work: machinery, steelwork and containers around the harbour, under the port's own access rules.
  • Homes and businesses across the city: roof trusses, water tanks and rooftop aircon plant, mostly with the 20–25 t crane.

River valleys, dolerite and a sandy coast

East London sits on a coastal plain cut by rivers, the Buffalo and the Nahoon among them, and most of these valleys run straight inland from the sea. Under it are old Karoo-age rocks shot through with hard dolerite, and the coastal strip is sandy. For a crane, that means:

  • Valley-side stands: houses and yards on the slopes down to the rivers often leave the crane on the road above, so the radius stretches. At 16 m the 25 t crane lifts 3.45 t and the 40 t 4.4 t.
  • Sand near the beachfront: pads go on wide mats, well away from soakaways and trench backfill. One outrigger of the 25 t crane can carry up to 26.9 t.
  • Rock on the ridges: firm under the pads but rarely level, so the set-up spot needs checking before the day.

Coastal wind is the other limit: load charts assume no more than 9 m/s (about 33 km/h), and sheeting or panels catch far more. Send photos of where the crane can stand and the load's mass, and we plan from those.

A pallet of components, a small generator or an empty container going to an IDZ factory is crane-truck work. A machine landing deep inside a building, or anything over about 3 t at 10 m, needs the mobile crane. See crane truck hire.

Paperwork for a lift in Buffalo City

  • Street set-up: if the crane or its outriggers stand on a public road or pavement, you need Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality's permission and traffic control on the day. The 25 t crane needs about 6.6 m of width on full outriggers.
  • Load test: each crane has a thorough examination and load test by a registered lifting machinery entity within the last 12 months (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). As the user of a hired crane you keep its test and service records on site; we send copies first, on request.
  • Operator: certified by an accredited training provider, code C33 for mobile cranes up to 50 t and C35 above.
  • Rigger and banksman: for blind lifts into factories or over houses. If you don't have your own, they're added to your written price.

Cranes for the Border and the Kei

From East London the crane drives inland and up the coast: Qonce (King William's Town) is about 60 km from East London by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R5,160–R6,240, shown as its own line on your quote. Further west, crane hire in Port Elizabeth covers Nelson Mandela Bay; up the coast, crane hire in Durban. Other machines in the city are on plant hire in East London, and towns across the province on plant hire in the Eastern Cape. Sizes and charts: mobile crane hire.

How far will you send a crane from East London?

Anywhere in the province. Outside Buffalo City, travel is charged per kilometre each way: Qonce is about 60 km, Komani about 187 km and Mthatha about 226 km by road. Each comes as its own line on the quote.

How much is a crane truck per day in East London?

An 8–10 t crane truck with operator is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, or about R1,000 an hour for short jobs; a 12–15 t is R3,200–R5,200 a day.
