Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. We hold only a few price points for mobile cranes, so the rate for your lift is confirmed in writing once we have the weight, the radius and the date. The Windy City: planning a lift around the wind

Gqeberha's nickname is earned, and on most outdoor jobs here the wind, not the weight, decides whether a lift goes ahead. A crane's load chart is worked out for wind of at most 9 m/s, about 33 km/h, on a compact load. What matters is how much surface the load shows the wind for its weight:

How the load's shape changes the wind risk
LoadSurface for its weightWhat we do
Steel beams, machines, precastSmallLift to the normal chart, tag lines on
Packs of roof sheeting, cladding panelsLargeLower wind limit; early-morning slot
Empty water or process tanksVery largeCalm-day lift, standby agreed upfront
Portal frames on a spreader beamLarge, and longLower limit, two tag lines, banksman

Book wind-sensitive lifts for the morning, leave a spare day in long steel jobs, and write standby terms into the quote so a windy afternoon isn't a surprise.

Car plants, Coega and the harbour

Kariega and the car plants

Nelson Mandela Bay builds cars: Volkswagen's plant in Kariega makes the Polo, and Gqeberha has Isuzu's bakkie plant and Ford's engine plant, ringed by component factories and warehouses. Crane work there means machines into and out of buildings, steel for new bays, and rooftop plant.

Coega and the Port of Ngqura

The Coega zone north-east of the city holds factories, logistics sites and energy projects beside the deep-water Port of Ngqura, where Transnet plans a bulk manganese export terminal. New builds there need the 40 t and the 80–90 t for steel frames and plant; running sites need lighter lifts and crane trucks.

Homes from Summerstrand to Walmer

Roof trusses, water tanks and pool equipment over houses, mostly with the 20–25 t crane, which lifts 2.15 t at 20 m.

Sand by the sea, clay and rock inland

Near the coast the ground is mostly sand, which shifts under a concentrated load. An outrigger of the 25 t crane carries up to 26.9 t, so on sand it goes down on a large mat (1.5 m × 1.5 m brings the pressure to about 117 kPa) and stays clear of trench backfill and soakaways. Towards Kariega, clay and rock take over in places. Rain can come in any month on this coast, so check the set-up spot after a wet spell. Fully extended, the outriggers need 6.6 m of width.

Crane sizes most hired in Port Elizabeth

  • 20–25 t: houses, shops and small factory lifts; 7.8 t at 10 m.
  • 40 t: factory and warehouse steel where the beams land 15–20 m out; 3.0 t at 20 m.
  • 80–90 t: heavy plant, big tanks and long reaches in the zone and the port; 9.9 t at 20 m, 4.9 t at 30 m.
  • 8–10 t crane truck: about 2.9 t at 9.9 m, carrying its own load.

Permits, certificates and the lifting crew

A crane standing in a street or on a pavement needs Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's permission and traffic control for the day. Inside the Coega zone and the ports, their own rules apply as well.

Under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 (reg 18), each of our cranes carries a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity not older than 12 months. You keep a register of the hired crane's latest test and service records on site; copies come before the crane, on request. Our operators are certified for the crane class (C33 up to 50 t, C35 above). For lifts the operator can't see, a banksman gives the signals and a rigger slings the load; tell us if you need them and they're priced on the quote. Full rules: safety and certificates.

Crane hire around Nelson Mandela Bay

Jeffreys Bay is about 82 km from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R7,060–R8,520, shown as its own line on your quote. Up the coast, see crane hire in East London; west, crane hire in Cape Town. Other machines in the metro: plant hire in Port Elizabeth; the province: plant hire in the Eastern Cape.

Questions people ask

How much is crane hire in Port Elizabeth?

about R4,500 a day for a 20–25 t mobile crane, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t, with operator, excluding VAT. Inside Nelson Mandela Bay travel is small; Jeffreys Bay and further are priced on the road distance.

Will the crane lift if it's windy?

Only within the wind limit for that crane and that load. Load charts assume no more than 9 m/s (about 33 km/h) on a compact load; sheeting, panels and empty tanks catch far more wind, so the limit for them is lower. If the wind is over it, the operator waits or stops. Agree standby terms on the quote for big lifts.

Do you lift inside the Coega zone and the ports?

Yes. The zone and the ports run their own access, induction and permit rules. Send them with the booking, and we send the crane's load-test and operator certificates in advance for the gate.

Crane truck or mobile crane for a factory delivery in Kariega?

Under about 3 t, landing within about 10 m of where the truck parks: a crane truck, which carries the load and lifts it off. Heavier, further or over a building: a mobile crane. See crane truck hire.
