Cape Town is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. Out to the Winelands, travel is per kilometre: Stellenbosch is about 52 km from Cape Town by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R4,480–R5,400, shown as its own line on your quote. Rates in full: mobile crane hire rates.

Cape Town's summer south-easter is the wind to plan crane lifts around. A crane's load chart is only valid up to a set wind speed: the 25 t crane's chart (Tadano GR-250N or similar) is calculated for wind up to 9 m/s, about 33 km/h, on a load with about 1 m² of surface for every tonne. Loads with big flat faces catch far more wind and swing, so the operator works to a lower limit for them:
- roof sheets, solar panels and glass
- precast wall panels, billboard faces and signage
- shade structures, carport roofs and large plastic tanks
How we plan for it: we check the forecast with you the day before, keep a second date in reserve for wind-sensitive lifts in summer, and tell you early if the wind will stop the lift. Winter cold fronts bring gusty wind of their own, plus the rain: the south-western Cape gets most of its rain in June, July and August (South African Weather Service), which softens ground under the outriggers.
Where Cape Town hires cranes
Port side and the industrial areas
Paarden Eiland beside the harbour, Epping and Stikland: machinery in and out of factories, containers on and off trucks, steel, generators and transformers. Yards are usually concrete, so set-up is quick; inside buildings, check the roller-door height and where the crane can stand. Paarden Eiland is about 6 km from Cape Town by road, inside our normal delivery area. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
City Bowl and the Atlantic seaboard
Steep stands and narrow streets against the mountain. The crane often has to stand in the road, and the street may be too tight for full outriggers. That matters: squeezed from 6.6 m to 3.6 m wide, a 25 t crane's lift at 10 m drops from 7.8 t to 3.2 t. A 40 t crane on short outriggers, or a crane truck for lighter loads, is often the answer. Send a photo of the street and the drop point.
Northern suburbs and the Winelands
New homes, complexes and warehouses around Bellville, Durbanville and Brackenfell (trusses, steel, precast), and tanks and steel on farms and cellars around Stellenbosch and Paarl.
Ground, streets and permits
- Sand on the Flats: most of the metro, from Bellville to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, sits on the sandy Cape Flats Aquifer. Loose or wet sand spreads under an outrigger, and on a 25 t crane one outrigger can carry up to 26.9 t, so we use larger mats and keep pads off new fill, trenches and soakaways.
- Rock and slopes against the mountain: firm ground, but the crane must set up level, so the flattest spot, often the street, wins.
- A crane in a City road: if the crane or its outriggers stand in a road or on a pavement, you need the City of Cape Town's permission and traffic control in place before lift day. Apply early; we give you the crane's footprint for the application.
- Overhead lines: arrange a switch-off or written clearance with the City or Eskom if a line is near the lift.
Crane sizes most hired in Cape Town
The 20–25 t crane does most house, farm and small commercial lifts. The 40 t comes in when the seaboard streets push the radius out or the outriggers can't extend fully. The 80–90 t is for heavy machinery in the industrial areas and big lifts over buildings, with a counterweight truck following. Load charts for every radius: mobile crane hire. Every other machine we hire locally: plant hire in Cape Town. Along the coast we also send cranes for crane hire in Port Elizabeth and crane hire in Durban.

How much does a crane cost per hour?
Mobile cranes are priced by the day, about R4,500 for 20–25 t, or as a minimum charge for a short lift, because the crane still drives to site, sets its outriggers and rigs before the first lift. For a light load close to where a truck can park, a crane truck is about R1,000 an hour with operator; see crane truck hire in Cape Town.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for cranes?
It isn't a rule in South African law: neither the Driven Machinery Regulations nor the Construction Regulations contain it. The best-known version is a Japanese labour ministry safety campaign: lift the load about 30 cm and stop, hold it for 3 seconds to check the slings and balance, and keep the slingers 3 m from the load. What every lift with our cranes does follow: the load and radius checked against the load chart, outriggers fully set on firm, level ground, a trial lift just clear of the ground to check the slings, balance and brakes before the full lift, and nobody under the load.
Can a crane lift 900 tons?
Yes, but not one you'd book for a building site. The world's largest mobile and crawler cranes are rated above 1,000 t, but only at a very short radius, and they arrive in many truckloads for lifts planned months ahead. Most Cape Town lifts are well under 10 t at the radius that matters. Our cranes run from 20–25 t to 80–90 t, with 100 t and up priced on WhatsApp.
How much does a 100 t crane cost?
Exact price on WhatsApp, with the weight, radius and height. A 100 t all-terrain crane (Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 or similar) lifts 26.5 t at 10 m and 11.2 t at 20 m, drives on five axles at up to 60 t, and needs a truck for its extra counterweight. Often our 80–90 t crane (about R22,000 a day, 24.7 t at 10 m) does the same lift.
