Crane truck hire in Cape Town

In Cape Town an 8–10 t crane truck with operator costs R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator and a 12–15 t R3,200–R5,200 a day with operator, excluding VAT. It loads at the yard, drives to site and places the load with its own crane, which on the narrow streets of the City Bowl and Atlantic seaboard often does a light lift where a mobile crane can't open its outriggers.

What a crane truck costs in Cape Town

  • 8–10 t crane truck: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, or about about R1,000 an hour for a single delivery with a lift at each end.
  • 12–15 t crane truck: R3,200–R5,200 a day with operator, for heavier steel, machines and longer reach.
  • 20–34 t crane truck: about about R1,900 an hour (few price points, so a guide).

The operator drives and runs the crane, and prices exclude VAT. Inside the metro the truck drives to site and travel is small: Paarden Eiland, Maitland and Epping are all within our normal area. Out to the Winelands it's per kilometre, as in this example of one day placing tanks and pump-house steel on a farm near Stellenbosch:

Where a crane truck beats a mobile crane in Cape Town

Against Table Mountain the streets are steep and narrow, and a mobile crane needs room to spread its outriggers. A 25 t mobile crane (Tadano GR-250N or similar) needs 6.6 m of width; squeezed to 3.6 m, its lift at 10 m falls from 7.8 t to 3.2 t. A crane truck's stabilisers on a PK 18500 or similar spread 4.8 m as standard, and the truck brings the load with it, so for tanks, roof steel, a solar geyser or a pallet of tiles over a garden wall it's usually the simpler hire.

The limit is weight at reach. A 30 t·m crane in the 8–10 t class lifts 4.78 t at 6.1 m but 2.9 t at 9.9 m and 1.3 t at 16.2 m on its manual extension. Heavier than that at your distance, and it's a job for mobile crane hire in Cape Town.

Cape Town crane truck jobs by area

  • Paarden Eiland and Maitland

Next to the harbour: machinery between workshops, empty containers, steel stock and generators offloaded where there's no forklift.

  • Epping and Stikland

Factory yards on concrete, so set-up is quick. Check the roller-door height if the load goes inside.

  • Northern suburbs and the Helderberg

Trusses, lintels and roof sheeting bundles for new homes and complexes around Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell and Somerset West.

  • Winelands farms

Water tanks onto stands, irrigation pumps, cold-room panels and steel for packsheds around Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington.

South-easter, winter fronts and lift days

Summer brings the south-easter, and winter brings the rain: the south-western Cape gets most of its rain in June, July and August (South African Weather Service). Both change how we plan:

  • Summer: the operator stops when the wind passes the crane's limit. Light, flat loads swing first, so we lift them with tag lines and book a back-up date.
  • Winter: wet ground under the stabiliser pads and muddy site roads. We set the pads on mats and keep them off fresh backfill, soakaways and manholes.

Sand, streets and power lines

Most of the metro sits on the Cape Flats Aquifer, an extensive sandy aquifer, so from Bellville to Mitchells Plain the ground under a stabiliser pad is loose sand. Wide mats spread the load; a pad on bare sand or a lawn can sink mid-lift.

If the truck or its stabilisers stand in a City road or on a pavement, arrange the City of Cape Town's permission and traffic control before lift day. If the job also digs into the road reserve, for a tank base or a cable trench, that work needs a wayleave and a permit to work under the City's Wayleaves By-law, 2026. Overhead lines need clearance too: nobody may bring the boom or the load inside a line's safety distance without permission from the utility that runs it (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19(5)).

Certificates, and the sizes Cape Town hires

Each crane truck has a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity no older than 12 months, and the operator holds a certificate of training for truck-mounted cranes from an accredited training provider (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). Ask, and copies arrive before the truck does; details on safety and certificates.

The 8–10 t class does most homes, farms and workshops. The 12–15 t comes in for warehouse steel and reach over a wall from the street. Reach charts and deck sizes: 8 ton crane truck hire and truck crane hire. Every other machine we send in the city is on plant hire in Cape Town, and towns from the Boland to George on plant hire in the Western Cape. We also run crane truck hire in Durban and crane truck hire in Pretoria.

Questions people ask

Can a crane truck lift over a house on the Atlantic seaboard?

Often, if the load is light. Reach is measured from the crane column behind the cab, so a load landing 9–10 m from the column must weigh no more than the chart allows there: 2.9 t at 9.9 m on a PK 32080 or similar, less on a smaller crane. Send the weight, a photo of the street and the distance from the kerb to the drop point.

Will the south-easter stop my lift?

It can. Every crane has a wind limit in its manual, and the operator stops lifting above it. Flat loads such as roof sheeting, solar panels, glass and shade-cloth frames catch the wind and swing first. In summer we check the forecast with you the day before and keep a back-up date for wind-sensitive lifts.

Do you deliver crane trucks to Stellenbosch and Paarl?

Yes. Travel to the Winelands is per kilometre each way: Paarl is about R5,240–R6,340 there and back, shown as its own line on your quote.
