A short single delivery can go by the hour at about about R1,000 for 8–10 t. Rosslyn is about 15 km from Pretoria by road, inside our normal delivery area. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.

Rosslyn and the north: factory lifts

Rosslyn is Tshwane's car-making district. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has built more than 1.8 million vehicles and is the only plant making the BMW X3 plug-in hybrid for international markets, with component factories and warehouses around it. A crane truck moves machines and dies between factories, offloads steel and stillages where no forklift reaches, and places containers and transformers in yards. Plants run their own contractor rules: send the induction and permit requirements with the booking so the operator's papers are ready at the gate.

Pretoria East and Centurion: estates, roofs and rooms

Most new homes and complexes go up east of Menlyn, out to Faerie Glen, Silver Lakes and the estates beyond, and south into Centurion. Typical crane truck work here: trusses onto wall plates, water tanks onto stands, aircon condensers and solar inverters onto roofs, and prefab garden rooms over boundary walls. Estates often limit delivery hours and want contractor names and vehicle registrations in advance, so send the estate's rules when you book.

Reach from the street decides the size. A 30 t·m crane in the 8–10 t class (PK 32080 or similar) lifts 3.63 t at 8 m and 2.9 t at 9.9 m; beyond about 14 m it needs its manual extension and lifts under 2 t.

Dolomite, black turf and ridges: where the stabilisers go

Pretoria's ground changes in bands, and the stabilisers of a crane truck press a big load onto small pads:

  • Dolomite to the south: Centurion is the best-known dolomitic area. In 2025 the City of Tshwane declared 63 sinkholes a disaster, and one of Centurion's most active sinkholes started after a stormwater drain failed. We keep pads away from leaks, soakaways and ponding water.
  • Black turf in the north: from Pretoria North to Rosslyn and Soshanguve, the clay swells when wet and turns soft. After rain, pads go on wide mats and the truck stays on hard standing.
  • Quartzite ridges: the Magaliesberg and the ridges through the city give steep driveways. The truck must stand level, so the street is often the set-up spot.
  • Summer rain: Pretoria's rain falls between October and March (South African Weather Service). Lifts stop for lightning and strong gusts; book summer work for the morning.

Streets, lines and certificates

If the truck stands in a Tshwane street or on a pavement, check with the City of Tshwane and arrange traffic control; digging in the road reserve for a plinth or cable needs the City's wayleave. Overhead lines need clearance: nobody may bring the boom or load inside a line's safety distance without the utility's permission (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19(5)).

Our crane trucks have a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity no older than 12 months, and our operators a certificate of training for truck-mounted cranes from an accredited training provider (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). Copies come before the truck, on request: safety and certificates.

Sizes most hired in Pretoria

Homes and estates take the 8–10 t class; Rosslyn's factories and the yards in Pretoria West lean to 12–15 t, for heavier machines and reach into a yard. The 20–34 t (PK 65002 SH or similar: 22,000 kg close in, 62 t·m) is for heavy items several metres out. Charts and deck space: 8 ton crane truck hire and truck crane hire; heavier still, crane hire in Pretoria.

Every machine we send in the city is on plant hire in Pretoria; Centurion has its own page at plant hire in Centurion, and every Gauteng town is on plant hire in Gauteng. We also run crane truck hire in Johannesburg and crane truck hire in Cape Town.

Questions people ask

Can a crane truck work on dolomite in Centurion?

Yes, with care about where the stabilisers go and about water. We set the pads on wide mats on firm ground, away from leaking pipes, soakaways, fresh trenches and any dip where stormwater ponds. If your engineer's dolomite report limits loads in part of the stand, send it with the booking and we plan the set-up spot around it.

Do you send crane trucks to Hartbeespoort and Brits?

Yes. Travel out of the city is per kilometre each way: Hartbeespoort is about R3,360–R4,060 there and back and Brits about R4,560–R5,520, each shown as its own line on the quote.

Can a crane truck lift a generator onto a slab?

Usually. Read the mass off the generator's plate and measure from where the truck can stand to the slab. An 8–10 t crane with a 30 t·m rating lifts 3.63 t at 8 m; heavier units at that reach go to a 12–15 t truck. The slab and plinth must be cured and ready before the truck arrives, or waiting time is charged.
