Pretoria is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. Cranes are booked by the day or as a minimum charge. We have few price points for cranes, so send the weight and radius and the price comes back in writing. Rosslyn is Tshwane's car-making district. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has built more than 1.8 million vehicles, and component factories and warehouses cluster round it. Factory lifts there are usually about reach: a press or a motor that must come out through a roller door, or a beam that lands deep inside a bay. The 80–90 t crane still lifts 13.8 t at 16 m, where the 25 t manages 3.45 t. Factory sites set their own permits and inductions, so send them with the booking.

Dolomite, turf and ridges: what is under the outriggers

Pretoria's geology runs in bands, and each band changes how a crane sets up.

Dolomite in the south

Centurion and the south of the city sit on dolomite, rock that slowly dissolves and forms sinkholes when water gets into it. In 2025 the City of Tshwane declared 63 sinkholes a disaster, and one of Centurion's most active began after a stormwater drain failed. A crane pushes its weight into four small pads, so we keep them off leaking pipes, ponded water and old sinkhole repairs.

Black turf in the north

From Pretoria North to Rosslyn and Soshanguve the flat ground is black clay that swells when wet and cracks when dry. Dry turf carries a mat well; after a summer storm (Pretoria's rain falls from October to March) it goes soft. On unsurfaced yards, the crane needs larger mats or a hard-standing.

Quartzite ridges

The Magaliesberg and the other ridges give firm rock but steep stands. The crane must be level, so on a slope it sets up on the street above or below the house, and the radius grows.

Getting a crane into an estate

  1. Gate and boom: measure the gate width and any height bar.
  2. Weight on the road: the 25 t crane drives at about 25.6 t on two axles; the 40 t at up to 12 t per axle. Interlocking paving and stormwater grids can crack.
  3. Access list and hours: most estates need contractor names in advance and limit working hours. Book the gate for the crane's arrival time.
  4. Set-up space: fully out, the 25 t crane's outriggers span 6.6 m. On a narrow road with them squeezed to 3.6 m, its lift at 10 m drops from 7.8 t to 3.2 t.

If the crane must stand in a public street or on the pavement, you need the City of Tshwane's permission and traffic control on the day. We give you the footprint for the application.

Load test, operator and the people around the lift

Every crane we send in Pretoria has passed a thorough examination and load test by a registered lifting machinery entity within the last 12 months, and has a load indicator, as the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 require for cranes over 5,000 kg. Mobile cranes don't need a new test for each site. If you're the user of the hired crane, the register with its latest test and service records stays on your site: ask and we send copies before the crane arrives.

The operator holds a certificate from an accredited training provider (code C33 for mobile cranes up to 50 t, C35 above). A rigger slings the load; a banksman signals when the operator can't see it, such as lifting trusses onto the far side of a double-storey. If your team doesn't have them, they go on the written quote as their own line. More: safety and certificates.

Crane hire around Pretoria

Outside Tshwane, travel is charged on the road distance, for example: Hartbeespoort is about 39 km from Pretoria by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R3,360–R4,060, shown as its own line on your quote. West along the N4 the platinum belt has its own page, crane hire in Rustenburg; south, see crane hire in Johannesburg. For TLBs, forklifts and everything else in the city, see plant hire in Pretoria and, province-wide, plant hire in Gauteng. Sizes and load charts: mobile crane hire.

Questions people ask

How much is mobile crane hire in Pretoria per day?

about R4,500 for a 20–25 t crane, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t, each with an operator and excluding VAT. Pretoria is one of our main centres, so travel inside Tshwane is small. The exact figure for your lift comes back in writing on WhatsApp.

Can a crane set up on dolomite in Centurion?

Yes, on a firm, dry surface away from leaking pipes, ponded water and filled-in sinkholes. If an engineer has done a dolomite report for the site, send it with the booking so the set-up position avoids any marked zones.

Will a mobile crane fit into a Pretoria East estate?

Usually, if the gate, the turns and the overhead clearance allow it. A 25 t crane weighs about 25.6 t on two axles, which can crack paving, so we often set up on the estate road rather than the driveway. Send photos of the gate and the route to the house.

How much does a crane truck cost per day in Pretoria?

An 8–10 t crane truck with operator is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, or about R1,000 an hour; a 12–15 t is R3,200–R5,200 a day. See crane truck hire in Pretoria.
