Crane hire in Rustenburg

In Rustenburg a 20–25 t mobile crane with a certified operator costs about R4,500 a day with operator, a 40 t about R7,600 a day and an 80 t about R22,000 a day, excluding VAT. Light loads at workshops and stores often go cheaper on an 8–10 t crane truck at R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, and for mine work we send the paperwork the mine asks for before the crane arrives.

Rustenburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. Price points for mobile cranes are few, so read these as a guide; your figure, built from the load, the radius and the hours, comes back in writing. Lifts along the platinum belt

Rustenburg sits on the western side of the Bushveld Complex, and the platinum mines run along the N4 from Phokeng past Kroondal and Mooinooi to Marikana. Most crane days here fall into three kinds of work:

  • Shafts and plants

Pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyor pulleys, chutes and crusher parts, swapped on a breakdown or in a planned shutdown window.

  • Workshops and yards

Engineering shops, truck yards and stores that serve the mines: loading fabricated steel, offloading machines, setting tanks and compressors.

  • Town and villages

Shops, schools, clinics and houses in Rustenburg, Tlhabane, Boitekong and around Phokeng: roof trusses, steel frames, water tanks on stands.

Before a crane goes onto a mine

On a mine the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 applies, and the mine sets the rules for contractors on its property. A crane that arrives without the paperwork waits at the gate on standing time. Send us, with the booking:

  1. The contractor pack: induction dates, medical requirements (the Act requires medical surveillance of employees exposed to health hazards) and the forms the mine wants back.
  2. The lifting procedure: many mines want a permit to work and a written lift plan for heavy or critical lifts.
  3. Certificate copies for the register: the crane's load test and the operator's certificate, which we send before arrival.
  4. Power lines and services: plant yards carry overhead lines. Nobody may come inside a line's safety clearance without the permission of whoever runs it (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19), so arrange an outage or written clearance first.

Which crane for plant work? Four examples

In a plant, the load often has to come over a conveyor, a sump wall or a pipe rack, so the radius sets the crane size more than the weight does.

Example lifts against manufacturer load charts (full outriggers, 360°)
LiftCraneRated at that radius

3 t motor, 16 m away over a conveyor40 t (Liebherr LTM 1040-2.1 or similar)4.4 t (the 25 t manages only 3.45 t, before slings and hook block)
8 t gearbox, 20 m away80–90 t (Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 or similar)9.9 t

Send the mass from the nameplate or drawing and a photo of where the crane can stand. Full charts: mobile crane hire.

Turf clay under the outriggers

Rustenburg's norite weathers to expansive clay (black turf) in many places. Dry, it's hard; after a storm it turns soft and slippery, and the rain here falls mostly from October to March. One outrigger of a 25 t crane can press down with up to 26.9 t: about 117 kPa on a 1.5 m × 1.5 m mat, and more than twice that on a 1 m square mat. Wet turf can't carry it, so on unsurfaced yards the crane needs bigger mats or a compacted gravel pad. On the koppies and the slopes towards the Magaliesberg, rock can be close to the surface and holds well, but the stands slope. Tell us which you have.

Certificates and the lifting team

Each crane has a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity no older than 12 months and, being over 5,000 kg capacity, a load indicator (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). Our operators hold the accredited certificate for the crane: C33 up to 50 t, C35 above. On blind lifts into a plant, a banksman signals and a rigger slings the load; if the mine doesn't supply them, we add them to the written quote. Details: safety and certificates.

Cranes beyond Rustenburg

West into the province, travel is priced per kilometre: Lichtenburg is about 139 km from Rustenburg by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R11,960–R14,460, shown as its own line on your quote. East on the N4, see crane hire in Pretoria; for the coalfields, crane hire in Witbank. Other machines in town are on plant hire in Rustenburg, and the rest of the province on plant hire in North West. Long mine contracts: mining plant hire.

Questions people ask

How much is crane hire in Rustenburg per day?

With an operator, excluding VAT: about R4,500 for 20–25 t, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t. Rustenburg is one of our main centres, so travel to sites along the N4 is small; further out it's priced on the road distance.

Can you send a crane to a mine near Rustenburg?

Yes. Send the mine's contractor requirements with the booking: induction dates, medicals, its lifting procedure and permit to work. Our operator attends the induction, and copies of the load-test and operator certificates come before the crane, on request.

How much does it cost to hire a crane for 2 hours?

A mobile crane carries a minimum charge, because it drives in, sets its outriggers and rigs whatever the lift takes. Send the weight, radius and site, and we confirm a two-hour or half-day price in writing. For a light load near the truck, an 8–10 t crane truck by the hour (about R1,000) is usually cheaper.

Does a mobile crane need a new load test for each mine?

No. Mobile cranes are tested at least every 12 months and are exempt from a new test each time they move to another site within that period. The mine will still want a copy of the current certificate for its register.
