Long roads from Polokwane
Limpopo is a big province with one main centre for us, so travel matters more here than anywhere except the Northern Cape. Machines that drive (TLBs, tippers, crane trucks) are charged by the road distance both ways; big machines come on a lowbed. Road distances from Polokwane:
| Town | km from Polokwane | Excavator lowbed, both ways |
|---|---|---|
| Mokopane | 62 | R6,000–R9,500 |
| Tzaneen | 95 | R8,180–R9,880 |
| Makhado (Louis Trichardt) | 112 | R9,640–R11,640 |
| Burgersfort | 151 | R12,980–R15,700 |
| Thohoyandou | 176 | R15,140–R18,300 |
| Musina | 203 | R17,460–R21,120 |
| Phalaborwa | 205 | R17,640–R21,320 |
| Lephalale | 216 | R18,580–R22,460 |
On a one-day job far out, transport can cost as much as the hire. On a two-week farm job or a monthly mine hire it shrinks to a small part of the total, so book the work in one block where you can.
Bush and protected trees
Much of Limpopo is bushveld, and bush clearing for grazing, lands, roads and building is common work. The National Forests Act says no one may cut, damage or destroy a protected tree without a licence; the list includes marula, leadwood, shepherd's tree, camel thorn and baobab, all common on Limpopo farms. Mark them before we start. More on site clearing.
Minerals under the province
Limpopo holds three of South Africa's big mineral settings: the Bushveld Complex (platinum-group metals, chrome and vanadium) on its southern side, coal in the Waterberg in the west, and the Phalaborwa Igneous Complex in the east, with copper, phosphate, titanium, vermiculite and zirconium ores. That's why the mining towns below hire long-term plant.
Summer rain, hot days
Limpopo is a summer-rainfall province, with most rain between about October and March. As across South Africa, rain is heavier in the east and lighter in the west, and Polokwane itself gets only about 475 mm a year. Low-lying roads and river crossings flood in storms, so agree standing time for rain days. Winter is dry and the best time for earthworks and dams.
Plant hire in Tzaneen
Tzaneen, in Mopani District east of Polokwane, is farming country, wetter than the plateau around Polokwane because rain increases towards the east. Government's water projects include the raising of Tzaneen Dam.
TLB hire in Tzaneen
Irrigation mainlines and pump-house foundations on farms, packhouse and cold-room foundations, house building in town, and sewer and water connections. A TLB is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. Tzaneen is about 95 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R8,180–R9,880, shown as its own line on your quote.
Excavators and dozers for farm dams and land
New orchard blocks on slopes need terraces, contour drains and roads; farm dams need cleaning out and wall repairs after the rains. A 20–25 t excavator is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator and a D6-class dozer R5,000–R7,750 a day with operator. Each comes on a lowbed: R8,180–R9,880 there and back from Polokwane. A dam wall needs compaction in layers: see dam building.
Graders and forklifts
Orchard and plantation roads wash out in the summer storms; a 140-class grader is R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator. Packhouses hire forklifts for the harvest: R1,150–R1,600 a day for 2.5–3 t, machine only.
Here's a worked example for a Tzaneen farm job, three days of a TLB with the travel both ways from Polokwane:
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard 4x4 TLB (about 8 t), 3 days at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator | R11,700–R15,450 |
| Transport both ways to Tzaneen | R8,180–R9,880 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R19,880–R25,330 |
TLB hire in Thohoyandou
Thohoyandou is in Vhembe District in the far north, surrounded by villages and farmland. Most TLB work is house building and extensions, foundations, septic and soak-away holes, water lines and yard levelling in the villages around town, plus municipal water and road jobs. A TLB with an operator is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator.
Thohoyandou is about 176 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R15,140–R18,300, shown as its own line on your quote. TLBs for hire around Thohoyandou are best booked in blocks of several days, or grouped with neighbours' jobs in the same area, so one trip covers them all.
The ground here ranges from deep soil to rock close to the surface on the hills; where a trench meets rock, the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) saves a second trip. More on TLB hire and TLB hire in Polokwane.

Mokopane
Mokopane, on the N1 south-west of Polokwane, sits on the northern end of the Bushveld Complex, with large platinum mines nearby. Mines and their contractors hire excavators, ADTs, graders and water trucks by the month; the town and farms hire TLBs, tippers and dozers for bush clearing. Mokopane is about 62 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for an excavator there and back usually comes to R6,000–R9,500, shown as its own line on your quote.
Lephalale
Lephalale is coal and power: Eskom's Matimba station is close to town and Medupi stands to its west, fed from the Grootegeluk coal mine by a 7 km conveyor, in the coal-rich Waterberg. Hires here are long-term: excavators, dozers, graders and water trucks on mine and civil contracts. Lephalale is about 216 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for an excavator there and back usually comes to R18,580–R22,460, shown as its own line on your quote.
Burgersfort and Steelpoort
The eastern side of the Bushveld Complex around Burgersfort and Steelpoort is chrome and platinum country, with mines along the valley. Chrome ore leaves by road in side tippers for smelters and the ports at Richards Bay, Durban and Maputo; at about 25 m³ a load, an ore trailer's bins look half-empty at 34 t. Burgersfort is about 151 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for a side tipper there and back usually comes to R12,980–R15,700, shown as its own line on your quote. Steelpoort is about 150 km from Polokwane by road.
Phalaborwa
Phalaborwa sits on the Phalaborwa Igneous Complex, with its copper and phosphate deposits, in Mopani District, which takes in part of the Kruger National Park. Mine contracts hire excavators, loaders and water trucks; the town hires TLBs and crane trucks. Phalaborwa is one of the furthest towns from Polokwane, so monthly hires make the most sense. Phalaborwa is about 205 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for an excavator there and back usually comes to R17,640–R21,320, shown as its own line on your quote.
Mine hire terms, medicals and induction: mining plant hire.
The far north: Makhado and Musina
Makhado (Louis Trichardt)
Makhado lies on the N1 north of Polokwane, in Vhembe District. TLBs and excavators do farm, town and road work; dozers clear bush. Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is about 112 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R9,640–R11,640, shown as its own line on your quote.
Musina
Musina is the last town on the N1 before the Beit Bridge border post with Zimbabwe, so truck yards, warehouses and depots along the road hire forklifts, crane trucks and TLBs. Hot, dry and far: book in blocks. Musina is about 203 km from Polokwane by road. Transport for a crane truck there and back usually comes to R17,460–R21,120, shown as its own line on your quote.

WhatsApp your Limpopo jobQuestions people ask
Do you send plant to Tzaneen?
Yes. Tzaneen is served from Polokwane: Tzaneen is about 95 km from Polokwane by road. A TLB drives there and travel both ways is charged by the kilometre; machines on a lowbed, such as excavators and dozers, come to R8,180–R9,880 there and back. On a hire of a week or more that transport is spread over many days.
How much does it cost to hire a TLB in Thohoyandou?
A TLB with an operator is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, excluding VAT. Thohoyandou is 176 km from Polokwane by road, so travel both ways is its own line on the quote; booking several days in a row keeps the cost per day down.
Can I clear bush on a Limpopo farm without a permit?
Check first. Clearing 1 hectare or more of indigenous vegetation needs environmental authorisation, and protected trees such as marula, leadwood, shepherd's tree, camel thorn and baobab may not be cut or damaged without a licence under the National Forests Act. Mark protected trees before we start and the operator works around them. See site clearing.
Do you hire side tippers in Limpopo?
Yes, by the month with a driver: R75,500–R92,000 a month for a 34 t side tipper. In Limpopo they haul chrome ore from the eastern Bushveld, and coal, on routes to smelters, sidings and the ports. Formal quotes for contracts come by email.
