10 m³ tipper truck specs
The 10 cube is the everyday site tipper: a three-axle truck with a 10 m³ tipping body and a driver. We send it with the driver to building sites, farms and municipal jobs in all 9 provinces.
| Spec | Figure |
|---|---|
| Body | 10 m³ |
| Axles | Three: one steering axle, two driven rear axles (6x4) |
| Gross vehicle mass (GVM) | 25,500 kg |
| Empty (tare) | 8,500 kg |
| Legal payload | About 17,000 kg |
| Overall length | About 8.3 m |
| Width (before mirrors) | 2.59 m |
| Height (cab) | About 3.5 m |
| Wheelbase | 4.57 m |
| Hire price with driver | R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator |
Where the 17 t comes from: the National Road Traffic Regulations allow 7,700 kg on a steering axle and 18,000 kg on a tandem of two dual-wheeled axles. The maker rates this truck lower at the front, 7,500 kg, and the law takes the lowest of the limits, so the truck may weigh 25,500 kg loaded. Take off its own 8,500 kg and about 17 t is left for the load.
The driver: a goods vehicle over 16,000 kg gross needs a Code C driving licence, plus a professional driving permit (PrDP) to drive it for work. Our tipper drivers hold both.
How many tons in a 10 cube tipper, by material
Ten cubes of one material can weigh nearly twice as much as ten cubes of another. Quarries and sand pits sell by the ton, so this is also how you work out how many loads to order. Loose material weights are from Caterpillar's reference tables; rubble from the Kansas health department's volume-to-weight factors.
| Material | t per loose cube | Tons in 10 cubes | Legal at 10 cubes? | Loads for 100 t |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sand, dry | 1.42 | 14.2 t | Yes | 7.0 |
| Sand, damp | 1.69 | 16.9 t | Yes, just | 5.9 |
| Sand, wet | 1.84 | 18.4 t | No: about 9 cubes | 5.9 (at 17 t) |
| Soil, dry (dug out) | 1.51 | 15.1 t | Yes | 6.6 |
| Soil, wet (just dug) | 1.60 | 16.0 t | Yes | 6.3 |
| Clay | 1.66 | 16.6 t | Yes | 6.0 |
| Gravel, dry | 1.51 | 15.1 t | Yes | 6.6 |
| Crushed stone (13 mm, 19 mm) | 1.60 | 16.0 t | Yes | 6.3 |
| Rubble, clean (concrete, brick, soil) | about 1.07 | 10.7 t | Yes | 9.3 |
| Topsoil | 0.95 | 9.5 t | Yes | 10.5 |
Round the loads up: 100 t of crushed stone is seven loads, with the last one part-full. We load to the legal mass, not to the top of the body, so wet sand after rain goes at about nine cubes a load. The same tables for 6 and 18 cube tippers, and cubes per ton, are in how many cubes in a ton.
Per day or per load?
A 10 cube with its driver is R3,700–R5,250 a day, or about R2,300 a load on a short run in Gauteng. Which is cheaper depends on how many loads the truck can do in a day, and that depends on the round trip.
| Round trip, site to tip and back | Cycle per load | Loads a day | Day rate per load |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 minutes (tip site close by) | 35 min | about 13 | R285–R404 |
| 45 minutes | 60 min | about 8 | R462–R656 |
| 1.5 hours | 1 h 45 min | about 4 | R925–R1,312 |
| 2.5 hours (quarry far out of town) | 2 h 45 min | about 2–3 | R1,480–R2,100 |
- One load, short run: pay per load.
- Two or more loads in a day: day hire is usually cheaper, and the truck is yours all day.
- A loader that stops: on day hire, plan the loading so the truck isn't standing. Standing time is charged as agreed on your quote.
Other rates for the 10 cube: about R270 an hour dry (driver included, you pay the diesel); every tipper comes with its driver. Full tipper prices are on tipper truck hire.
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| 10 cube tipper, 2 days at R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator | R7,400–R10,500 |
| Transport both ways to Kariega (Uitenhage) | R3,180–R3,840 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R10,580–R14,340 |
Jobs for a 10 cube tipper
Carting spoil
Soil from foundations, pools, basements and trenches, loaded by a TLB or excavator.
Sand and stone deliveries
Building sand, plaster sand and 19 mm stone from the quarry or sand pit to site, ordered by the ton.
Rubble removal
About 10.7 t of clean rubble a load to the landfill, which charges by its weighbridge. See site clearing.
Gravel for roads and driveways
G5 and G7 gravel layers, tipped in heaps for a grader or bobcat to spread. See gravel roads and driveways.
Cut and fill
Moving soil from the high side of a site to the low side, or to a stockpile.
Farm work
Dam clay, road gravel and kraal manure, on farm roads a road truck can manage.
Example: how many loads to cart away a pool hole
A pool hole 8 m long, 4 m wide and 1.5 m deep is 48 m³ in the ground. Clay swells by about 20–25% when it's dug, so it becomes about 58–60 loose cubes. At ten cubes a load (clay weighs about 16.6 t per 10 cubes, inside the legal load), that's six loads. With a tip site 20 minutes away, one 10 cube and a TLB clear it in a day.
When to pick a 6 cube or an 18 cube instead
| 6 cube | 10 cube | 14–18 cube | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical truck | Two axles (Tata LPK 1518 or similar) | Three axles (Tata Prima 2528.K or similar) | Four axles, two steering (Tata Prima 3338.K or similar) |
| Legal payload | About 10.9 t | About 17 t | About 20–22 t |
| Price | R1,250–R1,900 a load (Gauteng) | R3,700–R5,250 a day | R3,300–R4,000 a day |
| Pick it when | Narrow streets, small plots, one or two small loads | Most site work: sand, stone, soil, rubble | Light bulk (topsoil, rubble) and long runs on open sites |
- Go down to a 6 cube when the street or gate is too tight for a three-axle truck, or the job is only a load or two.
- Go up to an 18 cube for light material over long distances. With heavy material it fills its legal payload at about 13–14 cubes, so the gain over a 10 cube is about 4–6 t a load, not 8 cubes.
- Go to a 34 t side tipper for long hauls of coal, ore or aggregate by the month.
Access and the tipping spot
- Gates: the truck is 2.59 m wide before mirrors, so a gate under about 3 m is tight. Measure the narrowest point on the way in.
- Overhead: the cab is about 3.5 m high, and the raised body reaches much higher. Look for wires, branches and roofs over the tipping spot.
- Ground: tip on firm, level ground. A loaded truck sinks on soft ground and tipping on a slope can tip the truck over.
- Loading: a TLB fills a 10 cube in about ten buckets, a 20 t excavator in about 8–9 passes, a 950 class front end loader in three or four.
Send a photo of the gate, the street and where you want the material tipped, and we'll confirm the truck fits before it leaves. Booking is the same as any machine: see how it works. Tippers near you: tipper truck hire in Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and every area we cover.

How many tons does a 10 cube tipper carry?
About 17 t legally. A typical 10 cube (Tata Prima 2528.K or similar) is rated 25,500 kg gross and weighs about 8,500 kg empty. Ten cubes of crushed stone weigh about 16 t and dry sand about 14.2 t, both inside the limit; ten cubes of wet sand weigh about 18.4 t, so that load stops at about nine cubes.
How many m³ is a 10 cube tipper?
10 m³: a “cube” is one cubic metre, and the body holds ten of them level-full. That's loose material in the truck. A hole in the ground gives more loose cubes than its measured size, because soil swells when it's dug.
How much is a 10 cube tipper per load?
About R2,300 a load on a short run in Gauteng, with the driver. If the truck can do several loads in a day, day hire at R3,700–R5,250 works out cheaper per load: at four loads a day it's R925–R1,312 a load.
Can a 10 cube tipper get into a residential street?
Usually, yes. It's about 8.3 m long and 2.59 m wide before mirrors, on three axles. Narrow gates, low trees, overhead wires and steep driveways are the problems: send a photo of the access. Where it won't fit, a 6 cube tipper will.
What licence does a 10 cube tipper driver need?
A Code C driving licence, which covers goods vehicles over 16,000 kg gross (National Road Traffic Regulations, reg 99), and a professional driving permit (PrDP). Every tipper we send comes with a driver who holds both.
Is a 10 cube the same as a 10 ton tipper?
No. “10 cube” is the body volume (10 m³). The truck's legal load is about 17 t, so it carries much more than 10 tons of most materials. Ten cubes of topsoil weigh only about 9.5 t, ten cubes of damp sand about 16.9 t.
