Get a Durban tipper priceWet Durban sand weighs more
A tipper's legal load is a mass, not a volume, and Durban's summer rain, mostly from October to March (South African Weather Service), makes the same cubes heavier. On a 10 cube with about 17 t to play with:
| Material | 10 cubes weigh about | Full body legal? |
|---|---|---|
| Topsoil | 9.5 t | Yes |
| Builders' rubble (concrete, brick, soil) | 10.7 t | Yes |
| Dry sand | 14.2 t | Yes |
| Crushed stone | 16 t | Yes, just |
| Damp sand | 16.9 t | Yes, at the limit |
| Wet sand | 18.4 t | No: about 9 cubes |
So in the wet months, sand from a soaked stockpile or a flooded excavation goes by weight. Weights from Caterpillar's loose-material tables and the rubble factor used by US waste regulators; our full tables are on tipper loads and cubes.
Tipper trucks for hire in Durban: which size
- 6 cube (two axles, about 10.9 t legal): the short wheelbase climbs and turns in the narrow, steep streets of the Berea, the Bluff and the hillside suburbs. About R3,050 a day dry; per-load prices for your route on WhatsApp.
- 10 cube (three axles, about 17 t legal): R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator. Most building, civil and rubble work.
- 14–18 cube (four axles; Tata Prima 3338.K or similar, 33,000 kg gross, 19 m³ body, about 21–22 t legal): R3,300–R4,000 a day with operator. Light bulk such as topsoil and rubble, and longer runs between site and tip. See 18 cube tipper hire.
Rubble, slips and the landfill run
Most Durban tipper days are rubble out or fill in, and the tip run sets the pace. In north-west Durban, the City reopened the Buffelsdraai landfill on 1 April 2025 for garden refuse, builders' rubble and sand cover material. The landfill charges its own fee on the weighbridge mass, separate from the truck.
Storm damage is the other big job. The April 2022 floods left embankment failures on the N2 and repairs on the N2 and N3, and slips on hillside stands across the city. For slips we pair an excavator with two or three tippers so the digger never waits: see plant hire in Durban. For small heaps on tight stands, a bobcat in Durban loads the tipper.
The port keeps the industrial areas south of the harbour busy too: the Port of Durban handles about 60% of South Africa's container traffic, and the yards and depots around it need fill, base and rubble moved whenever they are rebuilt.
Loading in the street: eThekwini rules
A tipper parked to load at the kerb is usually fine for a short stop. If the job blocks the road, eThekwini's Excavations By-law, 2022 requires a road-closure application four weeks before the road is closed, and digging in the verge or road reserve needs an approved wayleave first. Plan both before the booking date.
All sizes, loads and drivers: tipper truck hire. The Outer West, from Pinetown to Hillcrest: plant hire in Pinetown. The rest of the province: plant hire in KwaZulu-Natal.

How much is a tipper truck per load in Durban?
We price Durban tippers by the day, R3,700–R5,250 for a 10 cube with its driver, because the drive to the tip or the quarry sets how many loads fit in a day. At four loads a day that's about R925–R1,312 a load; for one or two loads, ask on WhatsApp for a per-load price on your route.
Can a 10 cube tipper get up a steep Durban driveway?
A loaded 10 cube is about 8.3 m long and weighs up to about 25.5 t, so steep, narrow driveways on the Berea and the Bluff are often a no, especially when wet. The tipper then loads in the street, or a 6 cube with its shorter wheelbase does the job. Send a photo of the access.
Do your Durban tippers come with a driver?
Yes. Every tipper comes with a driver holding a Code C licence and a professional driving permit (PrDP). Diesel, wet or dry, is confirmed in writing before the truck moves.
