Pinetown: factories below, steep suburbs above

Pinetown sits on the N3 in eThekwini's west, one of our main centres. The town has two kinds of work. Below, in the industrial areas of Pinetown, New Germany and Westmead, factories and warehouses hire forklifts, crane trucks and cherry pickers. Above, up the M13 past Field's Hill to Kloof, Gillitts and Hillcrest, the Outer West is steep and leafy, with big stands where TLBs, bobcats and mini excavators cut driveways, terraces and retaining walls.

Slopes and clay

Most Pinetown and Outer West stands slope, and the ground is clay over weathered rock. Clay digs easily when dry but turns slippery and soft after rain, and a cut in a slope can slide if left open. Keep cuts short, build the retaining wall as you go, and lead stormwater away from fresh fill. Where the bucket hits rock, the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) saves a second visit.

After the 2022 floods

The April 2022 floods damaged the N3 southbound ramp at the Peacevale interchange, with pavement failure and severe erosion of the road fill around a culvert, and stopped trains on the Durban–Pinetown line. The lesson for any Pinetown site: fills over culverts and stormwater pipes must be compacted in layers, and pipes sized for real storms.

eThekwini rules that affect your booking

Pinetown is in eThekwini, so work in the road reserve falls under the Excavations By-law, 2022. Beyond the wayleave itself (see plant hire in Durban), these rules shape the job:

  • On arterial and major collector roads, work is kept out of the peak periods unless the municipality allows otherwise, so a TLB on a main road works between the morning and afternoon peaks.
  • If you leave the site meaning to come back, the trench gets a temporary reinstatement, and you may not stay away for more than 14 working days without reinstating.
  • The site is cleaned up and finished within 10 days after the trench is reinstated.
  • Emergency excavations (a burst pipe or a sinkhole) start only after calling the municipality's wayleaves and excavations call centre.

TLB hire in Pinetown

The TLB is Pinetown's most-hired machine because it does the whole job on a sloping stand: the backhoe digs (to about 4.4 m deep with a standard dipper on a JCB 3CX or similar), and the front bucket loads the spoil and backfills. R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry (operator included, you pay the diesel).

  • Factory yards in New Germany and Westmead: drainage along walls, yard repairs and cable trenches.
  • Houses in Pinetown, Cowies Hill and Sarnia: extensions, sewer connections and boundary-wall footings.
  • The Outer West: driveways and terraces cut into slopes, pool digs and retaining-wall footings in Kloof, Gillitts and Hillcrest.

Pinetown is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. TLB sizes, specs and every rate: TLB hire and TLB hire rates.

Forklift hire in Pinetown

Pinetown's factories and warehouses hire forklifts for stock peaks, stocktakes, breakdowns of their own machines and moves:

Forklift rates, machine only, excl. VAT
SizeUsed forPrice
1–2 tLight pallets, small storesR940–R1,600 a day; about R5,650 a week
2.5–3 tStandard pallets, most warehousesR1,150–R1,600 a day
3.5–5 tHeavy pallets, steel, machineryR1,600–R1,900 a day; about R30,000 a month

Pinetown streets are steep, and a forklift isn't built to drive on a slope with a load, so tell us if the loading area isn't level. A forklift is a lifting machine under the Driven Machinery Regulations, so whoever drives it needs a certificate from an accredited training provider; add our operator if your staff don't have one. Pinetown is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. More: forklift hire in Durban.

Bobcat hire in Pinetown

A standard bobcat (Bobcat S450 or similar) is 1.58 m wide over the bucket and carries 608 kg safely, so it fits past houses and into factory bays. Jobs here: loading rubble from renovations and factory refits, spreading crusher run, levelling paving beds, and sweeping yards. R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator, or R3,000–R3,600 a day with a breaker, auger or broom. It comes on a trailer: R1,300–R3,840 there and back. See bobcat hire in Durban.

Crane truck hire in Pinetown

Machinery moves between factories, container offloading, and placing tanks, generators and prefab rooms: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t, R3,200–R5,200 a day for 12–15 t, or about R1,000 an hour for a short lift. On a sloping street the truck needs a level spot for its stabilisers, so send a photo of where it will stand. Pinetown is one of the main centres we send machines from. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. See crane truck hire in Durban.

Cherry picker hire in Pinetown

Signage, roof sheeting, gutters and lighting on factory fronts and shops, and tree work and painting on tall Outer West houses: a 12–15 m cherry picker is R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator and a 16–17 m R4,150–R7,900 a day, with a certified operator and a load-test certificate not older than 12 months. For a month of maintenance, 12–15 m is R32,500–R37,000. It comes on a truck, R1,300–R3,840 there and back. See cherry picker hire in Durban.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to hire a forklift in Pinetown?

A 1–2 t forklift is R940–R1,600 a day, 2.5–3 t R1,150–R1,600 and 3.5–5 t R1,600–R1,900, machine only and excluding VAT. Our certified operator can be added. Transport on a truck there and back is R1,300–R3,840 in the Pinetown area.

Can a TLB work on a steep Kloof or Hillcrest stand?

Often, if it has a level bench to work from and a safe way in. Send photos of the slope, the gate and the drive. Where the slope is too steep or the access too narrow, a tracked mini excavator (R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator) or an excavator with its longer reach is safer, and the retaining wall goes in as the cut advances.

What paperwork must be on site when you dig in the road reserve in Pinetown?

Under eThekwini's Excavations By-law, 2022, the wayleave agreement and the approved service plans must be kept on site at all times, with an approved traffic control plan and a wayleave name board displayed at the site. Have them ready before the TLB starts, because the wayleave holder must produce them on request.
