The standard TLB we send (JCB 3CX or similar) reaches about 4.45 m deep with its standard dipper and carries about 1 m³ in the front bucket, so one machine digs, loads the tipper and backfills. What it meets changes across the metro:
Berea, Morningside and the Bluff
Pools, retaining-wall footings and garage cuts on steep stands. The ridges are old red dune sand of the Berea formation with little clay to bind it, so cuts behind a wall are opened in short lengths.
Inland suburbs and townships
Extensions, extra rooms and sewer connections in Inanda, Clare Estate, Chatsworth and Phoenix. Inland the Pietermaritzburg formation shale weathers to clay that turns greasy when wet; Clare Estate, built on those shales, was one of the places hit by landslides in April 2022.
North Coast estates
House pads, estate services and landscaping in Ballito estates such as Zimbali and Simbithi. The estate office sets working hours and the gate list, so clear both before the booking date.
South Coast sand
Pool digs and sand moves on the lower stands at Amanzimtoti. Near the beach trench sides fall in quickly, so the operator digs, the pipe goes in and the trench is backfilled in short runs.
In the industrial strip south of the harbour, yard repairs usually start with a breaker TLB lifting old concrete.
eThekwini's wayleave rules and how they change a TLB day
Inside your own boundary no wayleave is needed. A connection across the verge, pavement or street is in the public reserve, and the Excavations By-law, 2022 sets the order of work:
- Service enquiry, then the wayleave. The applicant asks the service departments what lies under the route, then applies. The municipality aims to process a new wayleave within 30 calendar days, and nothing may start before it is approved.
- Excavation permit. The work itself runs on an excavation permit. A road closure needs its own application four weeks ahead.
- Hand-dig first. No machine digging until the known services are marked and opened by careful hand excavation. Our operator starts once the hand-dug holes have found the pipes and cables.
- Deeper than 1.5 m. The trench is shored or V-cut and registered with the Department of Labour before work starts. A V-cut is wider at the top, so expect more spoil and a longer backfill.
- Water and reinstatement. Water in the trench is pumped to stormwater, never into a sewer manhole, and wet material at the bottom comes out before backfilling. Permanent reinstatement is requested within 24 hours of backfilling and carries a 12-month guarantee.
Breaking the by-law can bring a fine of up to R300,000, up to three years in prison, or both.
Durban rain, slopes and access
Durban's rain season usually runs October to March (South African Weather Service), but heavy rain can arrive outside it: the April 2022 floods left an embankment failure on the N2 northbound. In storm season, open a trench in the morning and backfill it by the afternoon, keep spoil heaps back from slope edges, and agree standing time for rain days on the quote.
Measure before you book. The TLB is 2.35 m wide over its front bucket, about 3.3 m with the stabilisers down, and travels about 3.4 m high, which matters under carports and on narrow panhandle driveways.

What are TLB hire rates in Durban?
R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator for a standard 4x4 TLB with an operator, on a day of 8 to 9 hours. By the hour it is R320–R410 dry, usually with a minimum number of hours. With a hydraulic breaker for concrete or rock it is R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator. Prices exclude VAT.
How long does an eThekwini wayleave take?
The municipality aims to process a new wayleave within 30 calendar days of the application, which follows the service enquiry. A road closure is a separate application, lodged four weeks before the closure. Book the TLB for a date after the wayleave is issued.
Can a TLB work on a steep stand on the Berea or the Bluff?
Often, if it has a level place to stand. The TLB digs from its stabilisers, so on a steep plot the operator first cuts a bench or works from the street side. Where the drop from the gate is too steep or the side passage too narrow, a tracked mini excavator (R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator) is the safer machine. Send photos of the slope and the gate.
Do you send TLBs to Ballito and the North Coast?
Yes. Ballito is about 50 km from Durban by road, so travel there and back is its own line on the quote, usually R4,300–R5,200.
