Forklift prices in Durban
A forklift's size is the weight it lifts at a 500 mm load centre, the middle of a standard pallet. Start from your heaviest load.
| Size | Fuel | Durban work it suits | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 t | Electric, LPG or diesel | Cold stores, retail distribution, light pallets and racking | R940–R1,600 |
| 2.5–3 t | Diesel or LPG | Unpacking containers, loading trucks at the bay, factory floors | R1,150–R1,600 |
| 3.5–5 t | Diesel | Steel, machinery, bagged cargo and heavy pallets in yards | R1,600–R1,900 |
For a month of port-season or stock-move work, a 3.5–5 t is about R30,000 a month, or R8,500 a week. These sizes have few price points, so your exact figure comes back on WhatsApp. All periods: forklift hire rates.
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| 2.5–3 t forklift, 5 days at R1,150–R1,600 a day machine only | R5,750–R8,000 |
| Transport both ways to Durban | R1,300–R3,840 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R7,050–R11,840 |
Containers and the harbour
The Port of Durban is the busiest port in sub-Saharan Africa and handles about 60% of South Africa's container traffic through its Pier 1 and Pier 2 terminals. Most of those boxes are packed and unpacked in warehouses and depots around the harbour and in the industrial areas to its south, which is where most of our Durban forklifts go.
- Unpacking a container: a 2.5–3 t truck with a container mast, plus a ramp or a dock leveller if there's no loading bay.
- Long loads: pipes, timber and steel lengths are side-loader work (exact price on WhatsApp), because a front forklift carries them crossways.
- Peaks: a ship's arrival, a stock count or a breakdown in your own fleet. Tell us the end date so the forklift stays until the backlog clears.
Dube TradePort and the north
Dube TradePort is a designated special economic zone 30 km north of Durban, around King Shaka International Airport. Its Dube TradeZone is a serviced industrial estate for warehousing, manufacturing and air cargo distribution, next to the Dube Cargo Terminal, and its Dube AgriZone grows, packs and ships high-value perishables.
Perishables mean cold rooms, and cold rooms mean electric forklifts: no exhaust in a sealed space. Tell us the shift length so the battery lasts, and whether the truck works in and out of the cold, where condensation makes the floor at the door slippery. Verulam is about 29 km from Durban by road, inside our normal delivery area, so the north of the city is on our normal delivery route.
Humidity, salt and summer storms
Durban's rain season runs from October to March (South African Weather Service), often as heavy afternoon storms that flood loading yards in minutes. Counterbalance forklifts have small, hard tyres and need concrete or paving; on a wet ramp, the operator lowers the load and slows down. Gravel or broken yards call for a rough-terrain forklift.
The air near the harbour is humid and salty. Hose salt spray off forklifts that work on the quayside, keep battery chargers in a dry, ventilated spot, and check tyre grip and brakes before each shift as part of the daily inspection.
Certificates for the operator and the forklift
A forklift is a lifting machine. Under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 (reg 18(11)), nobody may operate one unless they hold a certificate of training from an accredited training provider, for the right type: the 2024 National Code of Practice lists counterbalance trucks as F1 (to 3,000 kg) and F2 (to 7,000 kg), reach trucks as F5 and side loaders as F10. The forklift itself gets a load test at least every 12 months, and when you lease one you keep its latest test and service records on site. We send copies on request: safety and certificates.
Sizes, lift heights and fuel types: forklift hire. Every machine we send in the city: plant hire in Durban. Other cities: forklift hire in Cape Town and forklift hire in Johannesburg.

How much is forklift hire in Durban?
R940–R1,600 a day for 1–2 t, R1,150–R1,600 for 2.5–3 t and R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only and excluding VAT. A week on a 1–2 t is about R5,650. Delivery in Durban is R1,300–R3,840 there and back.
Can I hire a forklift with a driver in Durban?
Yes. Our forklift prices are machine only, and a certified operator is added to your written price on request, with a copy of the operator's certificate before the forklift arrives if you ask. If your own staff drive, each needs a certificate of training for that type of forklift.
Which forklift unpacks a shipping container?
A 2.5–3 t counterbalance forklift with a container mast (full free lift): the forks rise before the mast extends, so it lifts inside the container without hitting the roof. Tell us whether you have a loading bay or need a ramp. Lifting the full container off a truck is crane truck work.
Do you deliver forklifts to Dube TradePort and Ballito?
Yes. Dube TradePort and the North Coast are on our Durban delivery route. Ballito is about 50 km from Durban, so a forklift there and back is R4,300–R5,200.
