City Deep, the Joburg Market and the industrial south

Johannesburg is more than 500 km by road from the nearest seaport, so its containers arrive by rail and road. The City Deep Transport Logistics Hub, south-east of the CBD, is Africa's largest inland port and South Africa's largest container depot, the City says, and Transnet's 2015 upgrade doubled its capacity to 400,000 TEU (twenty-foot containers) a year. Every one of those boxes is unpacked somewhere nearby, so the warehouses and depots around City Deep run forklifts every day.

Next door is the Joburg Market, 63 hectares and Africa's largest fresh produce market. Produce moves on pallets into cold rooms, which is electric forklift work: no exhaust and quiet in a closed space. Further west, the yards and workshops of Booysens and Ormonde handle steel and machinery, where a 3.5–5 t diesel truck earns its keep.

Choosing the forklift for a Joburg warehouse

  • Height: capacity drops as the forks rise. A 2 t truck (Hyster H2.0A or similar) holds its full 2,000 kg to 4.2 m, then 1,770 kg at 5.5 m. Give us the top beam height and the heaviest pallet stored up there.
  • Fuel: electric for food stores and closed sheds, LPG for trucks that go in and out of a building, diesel for open yards.
  • Narrow aisles: a reach truck fits racking a counterbalance forklift can't turn in. It's a different certificate (code F5) and priced on WhatsApp.

Summer storms and Highveld yards

Johannesburg's rain falls from October to March (South African Weather Service), mostly in short, violent afternoon storms. Flat yards pond, painted concrete turns slippery, and a counterbalance forklift's small, hard tyres lose grip. Our operators lower the load and slow down on wet surfaces. If the yard is gravel or broken paving, a rough-terrain forklift is the safer hire.

A forklift is a lifting machine. Nobody may drive one without a certificate of training from an accredited training provider (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18(11)), and the forklift needs a load test not older than 12 months, with the records kept on site while you hire it. Copies come before delivery on request: safety and certificates.

Delivery across Johannesburg

Johannesburg is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. Alberton, Randburg, Soweto and Roodepoort are charged at that in-city rate: Alberton is about 12 km from Johannesburg by road, inside our normal delivery area, and Roodepoort is about 21 km from Johannesburg by road, inside our normal delivery area.

The East Rand's warehouses around OR Tambo are covered on forklift and plant hire in Boksburg. Sizes and fuel types: forklift hire. Every machine we send in the city: plant hire in Johannesburg. Other cities: forklift hire in Durban and forklift hire in Cape Town.

Questions people ask

How much is forklift hire in JHB?

R940–R1,600 a day for 1–2 t, R1,150–R1,600 for 2.5–3 t and R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only and excluding VAT. By the week, a 1–2 t is about R5,650. Transport in Johannesburg is R1,300–R3,840 there and back.

Can I hire a forklift with an operator in Johannesburg?

Yes. Ask for our certified operator and the day rate is added to your written price. If your own staff drive, each needs a certificate of training for that type of forklift from an accredited training provider.

Can I hire a forklift for one day in Johannesburg?

Yes. A 1–2 t forklift is R940–R1,600 for the day plus transport both ways. Book delivery for early morning so a short job, like offloading one truck, still gets the whole day.

What forklift do I need to unpack a container from City Deep?

A 2.5–3 t forklift (R1,150–R1,600 a day) with a container mast, whose forks rise before the mast extends, so it can lift inside the box. Say whether you have a loading bay or need a ramp.
