Cape Town ground, rain and permits
Sand on the Flats, rock against the mountain
Cape Town digs in two very different materials. The Cape Flats Aquifer, an extensive sandy, unconfined aquifer, covers most of the metro's urban area, so from Bellville to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha the TLB is usually in loose sand. Sand digs fast but won't stand in a vertical wall: deeper trenches need the sides battered back or shored, and backfill is compacted in thin, damp layers.
Against Table Mountain and the other ranges, in the City Bowl, the Atlantic seaboard and the southern suburbs, it's the opposite. Stands are steep, streets narrow and the ground stony, so a mini excavator or bobcat with a breaker often beats a full-size TLB. Measure the access and check the slope before booking.
Winter rain, June to August
The south-western Cape is a winter-rainfall region and gets most of its rain in June, July and August (South African Weather Service). Bulk earthworks, sand moves and tipper-heavy jobs run best from October to April. In summer the south-easter blows instead, which matters for dust (keep a water truck on hand) and for cherry pickers and cranes, which stop when the wind passes their limit.
City of Cape Town wayleaves
Under the Wayleaves By-law, 2026, excavation, trenching and clearing on City property, including road reserves, need a wayleave on the City's Wayleave Management System, followed by a permit to work for the contractor. No work starts before both are issued, and the City needs at least five working days' notice. The City's standards limit open trenching in the road reserve to between 09:00 and 15:30. Trenches must be backfilled the same day and reinstated within 7 days, so plan a compactor to follow the digger.
Earthmoving equipment hire in Cape Town
Bobcat hire in Cape Town
The most useful machine on a Cape Town house site: it moves sand, loads rubble into tippers, levels paving beds and fits through gates a TLB can't. R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator, R190–R370 an hour, or R3,000–R3,600 a day with operator with a breaker, auger or broom. It comes on a trailer, R1,300–R3,840 there and back inside the city. See bobcat hire.
Excavator hire in Cape Town
For bulk earthworks on developments in the northern suburbs, deep sewer and stormwater lines, and basements: R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator for 20–25 t, about R4,500 a day for 30 t. It comes on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back inside the city. For tight sites, see mini excavator hire in Cape Town.
TLB hire in Cape Town
Foundations, trenches and loading in one machine, R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. Full local detail: TLB hire in Cape Town.
Tipper truck hire in Cape Town
A 10 cube tipper with driver is R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator, and 14–18 cube R3,300–R4,000 a day with operator. Tippers haul sand and rubble out and bring building sand, crusher run and stone in. Wet winter sand is heavier, so a load weighs more for the same cubes. See tipper loads and cubes.
Compactor hire in Cape Town
Sand compacts well with vibration and the right moisture. For trench backfill, use a rammer (R350–R470 a day) or a reversible plate (R400–R630); for paving beds, a forward plate (R270–R370). These come machine only. For roads and building pads on developments, a small roller is R1,050–R1,800 a day with operator and a 10–12 t roller R2,150–R5,600 a day with operator. See roller and compactor hire.
Water truck, water tanker and water bowser hire in Cape Town
Whatever you call it, it's the same machine: a truck with a tank and spray bar for dust control and compaction water. An 8,000–12,000 litre truck is R2,000–R2,300 a day with operator, 14,000–18,000 litre R2,400–R2,800 a day with operator, and 23,000–25,000 litre R4,000–R5,800 a day with operator. In the summer south-easter, a site without one can be stopped for dust. See dust suppression and the water truck guide.
Lifting and access machines in Cape Town
Scissor lift hire in Cape Town
For ceilings, ducting, shopfitting and warehouse racking on firm, level floors, an electric scissor lift (6–12 m) is R1,000–R1,500 a day. Outdoors on rougher ground, a diesel rough-terrain scissor lift (8–10 m) is R3,350–R3,700 a day. Both are machine only and come on a trailer, R1,300–R3,840 there and back. See scissor lift hire.
Telehandler hire in Cape Town
A telehandler lifts pallets of bricks and roof sheets onto upper floors and reaches over obstacles a forklift can't. We price telehandlers per job: exact price on WhatsApp. Send the heaviest load, the height and reach needed, the days, and whether you need forks, a bucket or a work platform. A telehandler is a lifting machine, so the operator needs a certificate from an accredited training provider. See telehandler hire.
Cherry pickers, cranes, crane trucks and forklifts
Each has its own Cape Town page: cherry picker hire in Cape Town, crane hire in Cape Town, crane truck hire in Cape Town and forklift hire in Cape Town. Every lifting machine we send has a load-test certificate not older than 12 months, as the Driven Machinery Regulations require.
Trucks and transport in Cape Town
Flatbed truck hire in Cape Town
Flatbeds carry steel, pipes, containers and machinery. We price them per job: exact price on WhatsApp. The price depends on the deck length, the weight, the route and whether lifting is needed at either end; if it is, a crane truck may do both jobs. See flatbed truck hire.
Lowbed transport and abnormal load transport in Cape Town
A 30 t lowbed runs R23–R90 a km with driver, depending on the load and distance; smaller plant deliveries run R43–R52 a km. Loads over the legal width, height or mass need an abnormal-load permit and may need an escort, which we flag when we quote. See lowbed hire and machine transport.
Equipment hire in Cape Town: small plant
Concrete mixer for hire in Cape Town
A 300–500 litre concrete mixer is R370–R470 a day, machine only. It suits footings, slabs and paving bases where a ready-mix truck can't get up the street.
Air compressor and compressor hire in Cape Town
A diesel air compressor with a pneumatic breaker is priced per job: exact price on WhatsApp, with the breaker size and hose length you need. For lighter breaking indoors, a heavy electric jackhammer (27–30 kg) is R380–R610 a day and a medium breaker R270–R440. See compressor, breaker and mixer rates.
Generators
Portable units from R320–R520 a day to large site sets: see generator hire in Cape Town.

WhatsApp your Cape Town jobQuestions people ask
Can I dig a trial hole in a Cape Town road reserve without a wayleave?
Only a shallow one. The City's road-reserve standards allow trial holes up to 600 mm deep on a Miscellaneous Permit; anything deeper needs a full wayleave, and the City can still ask for a wayleave for any trial hole. Excavation and trenching on City property otherwise need a wayleave and a permit to work under the Wayleaves By-law, 2026.
Do you hire machines in Cape Town in winter?
Yes, all year. Winter is Cape Town's wet season, with most rain in June, July and August, so we plan earthworks around it: shorter open trenches, firm access for tippers, and standing time agreed upfront. Cherry pickers, scissor lifts and forklifts working indoors or on hard surfaces carry on as normal.
What machine do I need to move sand in Cape Town?
For loading and spreading sand on a house site, a bobcat (R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator) or a TLB is enough. For moving it off site, add tippers. For bulk cut-and-fill on a development, an excavator and tippers, then a roller to compact the sand in layers with water from a water truck.
