Rustenburg is on the western side of the Bushveld Complex, the rock that holds South Africa's platinum, and the mines run along the N4 from Bafokeng land around Phokeng, past Kroondal and Mooinooi, to Marikana. On and around them a TLB (JCB 3CX or similar) does the small earthworks: water and slurry pipelines, cable trenches, drains around shafts and plants, plinth excavations and backfill, and clearing spillage along conveyor routes.
A mine is not a building site in law. It works under the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996, and the mine's management sets the rules for contractors: expect a site induction, operator medicals, and extra kit on the machine before it may enter. Rock, storms and towns further out
On the koppies and the slopes towards the Magaliesberg, rock can come up close to the surface; where a test hole hits rock, book the breaker TLB from the first day. On other stands hard rock sits deeper (a geotechnical report in Rustenburg's Waterkloof found it below about 2.2 m). Rain falls between October and March (South African Weather Service), with little outside that season; wet turf stops loaded trucks on unsurfaced roads and fills open trenches, so the dig-and-replace jobs go fastest from April to September.
