Newcastle is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. Mobile crane prices are based on few data points, so we confirm the figure for your lift in writing once you send the load, the reach and the town. What Newcastle lifts

Newcastle is the main town of northern KwaZulu-Natal, on the N11 between Ladysmith and Mpumalanga. It grew around its steelworks, chosen in 1969 for ISCOR's third integrated steel plant and later run by ArcelorMittal South Africa. Production there stopped in November 2025 and the long-steel business is in care and maintenance, so any crane work inside the works follows the site's own permit rules and schedule.

Away from the works, the steady crane jobs are:

  • Factories in the industrial areas: clothing and textile machines in and out of buildings, roof steel and sheeting on factory extensions, compressors and generators set on plinths.
  • Shops, schools and housing: roof trusses, water tanks on stands and precast in town, Madadeni and Osizweni, mostly within reach of the 20–25 t crane (2.15 t at 20 m).
  • Mines and farms: pumps, motors and conveyor parts on the coalfield, and tanks, shed frames and silos on farms.

Cranes for the coal towns of northern KZN

The northern KZN coalfield runs from Dannhauser and Utrecht to Dundee and Vryheid, and farms fill the country between. Outside Newcastle, travel is charged per kilometre:

  • Dundee: Dundee is about 69 km from Newcastle by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R5,940–R7,180, shown as its own line on your quote.
  • Vryheid: Vryheid is about 116 km from Newcastle by road. Transport for a mobile crane there and back usually comes to R9,980–R12,060, shown as its own line on your quote.
  • Ladysmith: about 100 km by road, priced the same way.

On a long trip, travel can cost more than the lift. If the load is under about 3 t and lands within about 10 m of the truck, a crane truck (about 2.9 t at 9.9 m) brings it and lifts it in one trip, which usually saves the mobile crane's travel and a separate delivery truck.

Dolerite, clay and frost

Northern KZN has a lot of dolerite, hard dark rock in boulders and sheets. It carries an outrigger pad well, but it's rarely flat, and a crane only lifts to its chart when it stands level. Between the rock, the ground weathers to clay: hard as brick in a dry winter, soft and sticky after a summer storm. Rain here falls from October to March, mostly in afternoon thunderstorms, and lightning stops a lift before the rain does.

  • One outrigger of the 25 t crane can push down with up to 26.9 t; on a 1 m square mat that is about 264 kPa, which wet clay won't carry. Bigger mats spread it to about 117 kPa.
  • Keep pads off fresh trench backfill, septic tanks and culverts.
  • Cold, dry winters are the easiest time to set up on unsurfaced yards and farm tracks.

Certificates and the lifting crew

Each crane has passed a thorough examination and load test by a registered lifting machinery entity in the last 12 months (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). Keep a copy of that test and the service record on site while you use the crane; we send them before it arrives, on request. The operator holds an accredited certificate for the crane (C33 up to 50 t, C35 above). When the load goes out of the operator's sight, a banksman signals and a rigger slings and tags the load; tell us if you need them and they're added to the quote. See safety and certificates.

Questions people ask

How much is mobile crane hire in Newcastle?

about R4,500 a day for 20–25 t, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t, operator included, excluding VAT. Inside Newcastle, Madadeni and Osizweni travel is small.

Can you send a crane to Dundee, Vryheid or Ladysmith?

Yes. Travel is charged on the road distance each way and shown as its own line: Dundee is about 69 km from Newcastle, Ladysmith about 100 km and Vryheid about 116 km.

Do I need a permit to put a crane in a Newcastle street?

If the crane or its outriggers stand on a public road or pavement, ask Newcastle Municipality for permission and arrange traffic control before the day. We give you the crane's footprint: about 6.6 m wide on full outriggers for a 25 t crane.

How much does a crane truck cost per day?

An 8–10 t crane truck with operator is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, or about R1,000 an hour; a 12–15 t is R3,200–R5,200 a day. See crane truck hire.
