Richards Bay is a port and heavy-industry town, so most crane work here is industrial:
- Port and terminal maintenance: conveyor parts, motors, gearboxes and steelwork at the bulk terminals.
- Plant shutdowns at the smelter, the pulp mill and the chemical plants, where several lifts must fit a fixed window.
- New factories in the industrial development zone: steel columns, portal frames, roof sheeting and plant installs.
- Workshops and yards in Alton: machinery in and out of buildings, containers on and off trucks, tanks onto stands.
Industrial sites usually ask for a lift plan, an induction and their own permits before the crane goes through the gate. Send their requirements with your booking so the operator and paperwork arrive ready.
Coastal wind: the limit on most lifts here
The coast at Richards Bay is windy, and wind stops more lifts than weight does. Manufacturer load charts are calculated for wind up to 9 m/s (about 33 km/h) on a load with roughly 1 m² of surface per tonne. Roof sheeting, cladding panels, big tanks and spreader-beam loads present far more surface than that, so the operator works to a lower wind limit and stops when it's passed.
- Plan wind-sensitive lifts for the calmer early morning.
- Use tag lines on every load so it can't spin.
- Agree standby time upfront for a big lift, so a windy afternoon is priced before it happens.
Size the crane by radius
| Radius | 20–25 t (Tadano GR-250N or similar) | 40 t (Liebherr LTM 1040-2.1 or similar) | 80–90 t (Liebherr LTM 1090-4.2 or similar) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 m | 19.6 t | 21.6 t | 46.7 t |
| 10 m | 7.8 t | 9.1 t | 24.7 t |
| 16 m | 3.45 t | 4.4 t | 13.8 t |
| 20 m | 2.15 t | 3.0 t | 9.9 t |
| 30 m | out of reach | 1.2 t | 4.9 t |
Count everything on the hook: slings, shackles, spreader beam and the hook block (220 kg on the 25 t crane). Reaching over a pipe rack or into a building often doubles the radius, which is why port and plant lifts often need the 40 t or 80 t even for light loads. More on sizes: mobile crane hire.
Sand under the outriggers
Much of Richards Bay is built on sand, often with groundwater close to the surface. A crane stands on its outriggers, and one outrigger of a 25 t crane can carry up to 26.9 t. Spread over a 1.5 m × 1.5 m mat that is about 117 kPa on the ground; on a 1 m × 1 m mat, about 264 kPa. Loose or wet sand can't carry even the smaller figure, so on sand the crane sets up on bigger mats. Keep the outriggers off fresh backfill, trenches, manholes and culverts, and tell us if the ground has been wet for days. Fully out, the 25 t crane's outriggers are 6.6 m wide.
Certificates for cranes in Richards Bay
- Load test: every crane we send has a performance (load) test by a registered lifting machinery entity not older than 12 months (Driven Machinery Regulations, reg 18).
- Your register: as the user of a hired crane, keep its latest test and service records on site.
- Operator: certified by an accredited training provider for that crane type: code C33 for hydraulic mobile cranes up to 50 t, C35 above 50 t (National Code of Practice, 2024).
- Rigger and banksman: needed on blind lifts over buildings and into plant. If you don't have them, tell us and we include them in the written price.
Copies of the load-test and operator certificates come before the crane does, on request. Full rules: safety and certificates.

WhatsApp us your Richards Bay liftQuestions people ask
What size crane do I need in Richards Bay?
It depends on the weight and how far from the crane the load must land. A 20–25 t crane lifts 7.8 t at 10 m but only 2.15 t at 20 m; a 40 t lifts 3.0 t at 20 m and an 80–90 t 9.9 t. Send the weight, the radius and a photo of where the crane can stand, and we pick the size.
Does the crane need a new load test for each site?
No. A mobile crane needs a performance (load) test at least every 12 months, and mobile cranes are excluded from a new test each time they move to another site within that period. If you hire the crane, keep a register on site with its latest test and service records, not older than 12 months. We send copies before the crane arrives.
