A port and smelter town: what Richards Bay hires
Richards Bay is the seat of uMhlathuze Municipality and South Africa's main bulk port. Coal from Mpumalanga is exported through the Richards Bay Coal Terminal, one of the largest coal export terminals in the world, and chrome ore from the platinum belt is trucked to Richards Bay and Durban for export. Around the port sit heavy industry and the town's industrial area at Alton:
- Aluminium smelting at the Hillside smelter.
- Mineral sands: Richards Bay Minerals mines the coastal dunes north of town for titanium, zircon and rutile.
- Pulp and fertiliser: the Mondi pulp mill, fed by Zululand's timber plantations, and the Foskor phosphoric acid plant.
- The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, next to the port, where new factories are built.
That mix is why crane trucks, mobile cranes, forklifts, generators and side tippers are hired here as often as TLBs. Maintenance shutdowns at the big plants bring a lot of lifting and access machines onto one site at once, so book them early.
Sand, water and wind: Richards Bay site conditions
Sand with water just below it
Richards Bay is built on the flat coastal sand plain between the lakes, the wetlands and the sea, and the groundwater is often close to the surface. Trenches fill with water and sand walls slump, so dig short runs, keep a pump on site and backfill the same day. On sand, crane trucks and cranes need large outrigger mats: the load spreads over a much bigger area than on rock.
Wind off the sea
The coast here is windy. Wind limits lifting machines more than anything else in Richards Bay: sheeting, panels and big tanks catch the wind, and the operator stops when it passes the limit for that load. Book wind-sensitive lifts early in the day and allow a standby day for big lifts.
Summer rain
Zululand is in South Africa's summer-rainfall east, where the South African Weather Service notes the rain normally falls between October and March. On the sand, rain drains fast, but it floods trenches and low-lying yards, so plan pumps and drainage in summer.
Permits
Trenches in a road reserve or servitude need a wayleave from uMhlathuze Municipality. Port and plant sites have their own access permits, inductions and PPE rules: send them with your booking and the operator arrives ready for the gate.
Crane truck hire in Richards Bay
A crane truck carries the load on its deck and lifts it with a folding crane behind the cab, so one machine collects, delivers and places. In Richards Bay that means moving spares and equipment between workshops in Alton, delivering steel and pipe to the industrial zone, offloading containers, and placing tanks, transformers and prefab site offices.
| Size | Typical Richards Bay job | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 8–10 t | Pallets, steel bundles, small tanks, generators | R2,500–R5,200 a day |
| 12–15 t | Containers, heavier machinery, site offices | R3,200–R5,200 a day |
| 20–34 t | Heavy plant and long-reach lifts | about R1,900 an hour |
Reach decides the size. A 30 t·m crane (Palfinger PK 32080 or similar) lifts 2.9 t at 9.9 m, so tell us how far from the truck the load must land, not just its weight. The operator holds a truck-mounted crane certificate (code C32 in the National Code of Practice) and the crane has a load-test certificate not older than 12 months. Richards Bay is one of the main centres we send machines from. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. See crane truck hire.
Forklift hire in Richards Bay
Forklifts work in the warehouses and workshops of Alton and the industrial zone, and on shutdowns moving spares and materials. Rates are machine only; add our certified operator if you need one:
- 1–2 t: R940–R1,600 a day, or about R5,650 a week.
- 2.5–3 t: R1,150–R1,600 a day.
- 3.5–5 t: R1,600–R1,900 a day, about R8,500 a week or about R30,000 a month.
On sand and gravel yards, ask for a diesel forklift with pneumatic tyres; electric forklifts with solid tyres belong on concrete floors. Under the Driven Machinery Regulations a forklift is a lifting machine, so the driver needs a certificate from an accredited training provider. Richards Bay is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. See forklift hire rates.
Generator hire in Richards Bay
Generators power construction sites before the connection, keep workshops and offices running during outages, and run tools and lighting during shutdowns and night work:
| Size | Typical use | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| 15–30 kVA | Site offices, small workshops, lighting towers | R680–R1,600 |
| 40–60 kVA | Welding bays, larger workshops | R2,300–R3,050 |
| 80–150 kVA | Construction sites, factories | R2,400–R4,600 |
| 200–300 kVA | Production areas, large buildings | R8,500–R9,750 |
| 500–750 kVA | Plant-scale backup | R14,000–R18,000 |
Diesel is extra. Salt air near the port is hard on electrical equipment, so tell us if the set will stand outdoors near the sea for weeks. Transport there and back is R1,300–R3,840 in the Richards Bay area. See generator hire rates.
Other machines in Richards Bay
Mobile cranes
For heavier or longer-reach lifts than a crane truck can manage: about R4,500 a day for 20–25 t, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t, with operator. Load charts, port lifts and wind limits: crane hire in Richards Bay.
TLBs and excavators
House foundations in Meerensee, Arboretum and Birdswood, services in the industrial zone and drainage on sandy yards: a TLB is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator. For bulk earthworks and deep trenches with dewatering, a 20–25 t excavator is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator, on a lowbed at R6,000–R9,500 there and back.
Side tippers
A 34 t side tipper with driver is R75,500–R92,000 a month with operator on monthly contracts, hauling bulk material to and from the port. Company documents and a formal quote on request. See side tipper hire.
Cherry pickers
Lighting, cladding and maintenance at height on warehouses and plant buildings: R2,400–R4,000 a day for 12–15 m, R4,150–R7,900 for 16–17 m, with operator. See cherry picker hire.

How much is crane truck hire in Richards Bay?
An 8–10 t crane truck is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator, or about R1,000 an hour for a short lift. A 12–15 t crane truck is R3,200–R5,200 a day and a 20–34 t about R1,900 an hour. Richards Bay is one of our main centres, so the truck drives to site and travel is small.
Can you supply machines for a plant shutdown?
Yes. Shutdowns usually need crane trucks, mobile cranes, cherry pickers, forklifts and generators on site together for a fixed window. Send the dates, the heaviest lifts and the hours per day as early as possible, and we confirm every machine, operator and certificate in writing. For a hire of several weeks, ask for weekly or monthly rates.
Do I need a wayleave in Richards Bay?
For a trench in a road reserve or municipal servitude, yes: apply to uMhlathuze Municipality, which covers Richards Bay, Empangeni and eSikhaleni. Inside the port and on industrial sites, the site's own permits and induction rules apply as well; send them with your booking so the operator arrives with what the gate needs.
