Bloemfontein is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. Hours, standing time and what else moves the price: TLB hire rates.

Why a Bloemfontein TLB job often needs more than a TLB

Large parts of Bloemfontein sit on clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks and cracks as it dries, a common cause of cracked walls and lifted paving. Research at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein describes a large number of structural failures in low-cost housing, many of them from heaving foundations, and tracked the moisture in the clay under a subsidised house in the Free State: light houses are easily lifted by swelling clay.

So engineers here often call for deeper or wider footings, or for the clay under a slab or road to come out and be replaced with compacted gravel. That turns one machine into a short sequence:

  1. The TLB digs out the clay to the depth on the drawing and loads it straight onto trucks with its 1 m³ front bucket.
  2. Tippers cart it away: a 10 cube tipper with driver is R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator, and on a busy dig-out one TLB keeps two of them moving.
  3. Gravel comes in on the same tippers, and the TLB spreads it in layers.
  4. A roller or rammer compacts each layer, with water added so it reaches density. See roller and compactor hire.

Send the engineer's foundation notes with your WhatsApp and we price the whole sequence on one quote.

Dolerite on the koppies

Major dolerite intrusions run through and around the city, and where that rock comes to the surface, on rises and koppies, it is hard. A standard TLB bucket stops on it within minutes, so if your stand is on a rise or shows rock at the surface, book the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) from the start. For a long trench through rock, an excavator with a hammer is faster than either.

Where TLBs work around Mangaung

The city. New suburbs and townhouse complexes on the edges of town, extensions and pools in the older suburbs, and sewer and water connections. Government, hospital and school buildings add trenches for cables and drains.

Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu. Housing, room additions and service connections in the two towns that, with Bloemfontein, make up Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality.

The farms. The Free State grows maize, wheat and sunflower and runs cattle. Farm jobs are pipelines from boreholes and dams, kraal and shed foundations, drains, and small earth dams. For farm roads, a grader does the shaping and the TLB the culverts.

Along the routes. The N1, the N8 and the start of the N6 meet here, with truck yards and warehouses along them that need yard drainage and slab repairs.

Rain, frost and wayleaves

Summer rain falls between October and March (South African Weather Service), mostly in short afternoon storms that turn clay sites to mud. Winters are dry and cold, with frost, which suits bulk digging but slows concrete. Any trench across a verge or pavement needs a wayleave from Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality first.

From Bloemfontein to the goldfields: a week in Welkom

Out of town, transport is charged per kilometre both ways, so a longer booking makes the trip worth it:

Questions people ask

Do you send TLBs to Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu?

Yes. Both are part of Mangaung, east of the city on the N8, and we work there on housing, extensions and service connections. Travel is confirmed with the price on WhatsApp.

When is the best time to dig in Bloemfontein?

April to September. The South African Weather Service puts the summer rain between October and March, and in Bloemfontein it comes in short, heavy storms that soak the clay and flood open trenches. Winter is dry, so bulk digging and clay replacement go fastest then.

Do I need a wayleave to dig in Bloemfontein?

For a trench in a road reserve, such as across the verge or pavement, yes: apply to Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality first. Next to a national road such as the N1, the national road authority must approve it as well. Inside your own boundary no wayleave is needed.

Can a TLB dig out clay under a new slab?

Yes, to the depth on the engineer's drawing. The TLB digs and loads in one pass, then spreads the imported gravel with its front bucket for the roller. On a big footprint, a 20–25 t excavator (R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator) loads tippers faster.
