What Bloemfontein hires machines for

A capital city at a crossroads

Bloemfontein is the Free State's capital and the seat of the Supreme Court of Appeal, and with Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu it makes up Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. The N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town passes the city, the N8 runs west to Kimberley and east to the Lesotho border, and the N6 starts here for East London. That puts warehouses, truck depots and distribution centres along the routes out of town, which is why forklifts, crane trucks and cherry pickers are searched for here as often as TLBs.

Farms all round the city

The Free State is maize, wheat, sunflower and cattle country. Farm work out of Bloemfontein means graders for farm roads, TLBs and excavators for dams, pipelines and kraals, crane trucks for silos, sheds and water tanks, and generators for pumps and workshops.

Building in the city

New suburbs and townhouse complexes on the edges of the city, government and hospital buildings, shopping centres and housing in Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu: foundations, services trenches and roads. That is TLB, tipper and roller work, usually by the day.

Clay, dolerite and summer storms: Bloemfontein ground and rules

Clay that swells and shrinks

Large parts of Bloemfontein sit on clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks and cracks as it dries, a common cause of cracked walls and lifted paving. Engineers often specify deeper or wider footings, or digging the clay out under slabs and roads and replacing it with compacted gravel. That adds tippers to cart the clay away and bring gravel in, and a roller to compact it in layers. Send the engineer's foundation notes with your booking.

Hard dolerite on the koppies

Major dolerite intrusions run through and around the city, and where that rock comes to the surface, on rises and koppies, it is hard. A standard TLB stops quickly in it: book the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) or an excavator with a hammer from the start if your stand is on a rise or rocky ground.

Summer thunderstorms

The South African Weather Service puts the summer rain between October and March. In Bloemfontein it falls mostly in short, heavy afternoon storms, which stop tippers on clay and flood open trenches. Winters are dry and cold, with frost, which is the best time for bulk earthworks but slows concrete and early starts.

Wayleaves and lifting rules

A trench across a verge or pavement is work in the road reserve: apply to Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality for a wayleave first, and have it on site with the underground service positions. Cranes, crane trucks, cherry pickers and forklifts are lifting machines under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015: each needs a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity at least every 12 months and an operator with a certificate from an accredited training provider. Ours come with both.

Machines hired most in Bloemfontein

TLB hire in Bloemfontein

Foundations on clay, sewer and water connections, extensions, and dams and pipelines on farms: R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry. Bloemfontein is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. More on TLB hire in Bloemfontein.

Forklift hire in Bloemfontein

Warehouses and distribution centres along the N1 and N8, stock moves, peak season and stocktakes: a 1–2 t forklift is R940–R1,600 a day, 2.5–3 t R1,150–R1,600 and 3.5–5 t R1,600–R1,900, machine only. Tell us if you also need our operator and it's added to your written price. A Hyster H2.5 or similar lifts its rated load at a 500 mm load centre, so tell us the pallet weight and the lift height. Bloemfontein is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. More on forklift hire.

Cherry picker hire in Bloemfontein

Signs, lights and gutters on shops and warehouses, roof sheeting on sheds, and maintenance on government and hospital buildings: R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator for 12–15 m and R4,150–R7,900 a day for 16–17 m, with a certified operator and a load-test certificate. Weekly hire on a 12–15 m machine is R11,500–R12,500. Transport there and back is R1,300–R3,840. More on cherry picker hire.

Generator hire in Bloemfontein

Site power before the connection is live, backup for shops and offices, pumps on farms and power for events: a portable generator up to 10 kVA is R320–R520 a day, 15–30 kVA R680–R1,600, 40–60 kVA R2,300–R3,050 and 80–150 kVA R2,400–R4,600, machine only. Transport there and back is R1,300–R3,840. Every size: generator hire rates.

Crane truck hire in Bloemfontein

Offloading machinery and containers at depots, delivering steel and trusses to sites, and placing water tanks and prefab rooms: R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator for 8–10 t and R3,200–R5,200 a day for 12–15 t. A crane truck loads, carries and offloads in one visit, and drives to site, so travel in the city is small. For heavier lifts see mobile crane hire in Bloemfontein.

Grader hire in Bloemfontein

Farm roads, gravel roads on smallholdings, estate roads and building pads: a 120-class grader is R3,900–R4,400 a day with operator and a 140-class R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator, or R490–R610 an hour for short jobs. On clay, the road needs a gravel layer, water and a roller behind the grader to last a summer. The grader comes on a lowbed, R6,000–R9,500 there and back in the city. See gravel roads and driveways.

Trencher for hire in Bloemfontein

For trenches we send a TLB for pipe trenches up to about 4.4–4.8 m deep, or a mini excavator (Bobcat E35z or similar, about 3.1 m deep) for narrow cable and irrigation trenches: R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator. In clay, trench walls stand while dry but can slump after rain, so dig, lay and backfill the same day where possible, and compact the backfill with a rammer (R350–R470 a day). Costs per metre and per day: trenching rates.

Tipper and excavator hire in Bloemfontein

A 10 cube tipper is R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator for carting clay out and gravel in, and a 20–25 t excavator R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator for bulk digs, farm dams and big foundation jobs. The excavator comes on a lowbed: R6,000–R9,500 there and back in the city. See excavator hire.

Around Bloemfontein and the Free State

Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu, east of the city on the N8, are part of Mangaung, and we work there and on farms all round the city. Welkom, on the Free State goldfields, is the next big town: Welkom is about 171 km from Bloemfontein by road. In the north, Kroonstad is about 141 km from Vereeniging by road. Town-by-town detail is on plant hire in the Free State.

Choosing a plant hire company in Bloemfontein: what to check

  1. Price in writing before the machine moves, with transport both ways, minimum hours and standing time on it.
  2. Clay plan: if the engineer wants clay removed, book the tippers and roller with the digger.
  3. Certificates for lifting machines: a load test not older than 12 months and a certified operator.
  4. Breakdown terms. Ours are a replacement machine or no charge for downtime.
  5. Wayleave and service positions sorted before digging in a road reserve.

Booking step by step: how it works. Certificates on request: safety and certificates.

Questions people ask

Do you send machines outside Bloemfontein?

Yes, across the Free State. Bloemfontein is one of the main centres we send machines from, so Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu and the farms around the city are close. Welkom is about 171 km from Bloemfontein by road, and Kroonstad is about 141 km from Vereeniging by road. Out of town, transport is priced on the road distance and shown as its own line. Town detail is on plant hire in the Free State.

Do I need a wayleave to dig in Bloemfontein?

Yes, for a trench or excavation in a road reserve, such as across a verge or pavement: apply to Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality first. Work in the road reserve of a national road such as the N1 needs the national road authority's approval as well. Inside your own property line no wayleave is needed, but find the underground services before we dig.

What machine do I need for a trench in Bloemfontein?

For most pipe and cable trenches we send a TLB (R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator), which digs about 4.4–4.8 m deep and backfills with its front bucket. For narrow cable or irrigation trenches between buildings, a mini excavator (R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator) is neater. In clay, plan for the trench sides and backfill in compacted layers. Costs per metre: trenching rates.

When is the best time for earthworks in Bloemfontein?

April to September. Bloemfontein is in South Africa's summer-rainfall area, where the South African Weather Service notes rain normally falls between October and March. Summer rain comes mostly as afternoon thunderstorms, which turn clay sites to mud and flood open trenches. In summer, book morning starts and agree standing time on your quote.
