Trenching price per metre
Last updated
How trenching is priced
You pay for the machine and its operator by the day, plus transport. There's no fixed price per metre, because the same machine digs 100 m in one yard and 15 m in the next. Prices updated: November 2026.
| Machine | Use it for | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| TLB, standard 4x4 | Most trenches: water, sewer, cable, foundations; digs and backfills | R3,900–R5,150 |
| TLB with hydraulic breaker | Rock and hard calcrete in the trench line | R5,000–R6,550 |
| Mini excavator, 1.5–6 t | Narrow access, back yards, around paving and trees | R1,700–R3,000 |
| Excavator, 20–25 t | Deep sewer and stormwater lines, long pipelines | R3,500–R5,600 |
| Rammer (trench compactor) | Compacting the backfill in layers | R350–R470 |

Cost per metre = the machine's day rate ÷ the metres it digs and backfills in a day. The metres below are planning assumptions for illustration, not promises: open site, services marked, spoil kept beside the trench and pushed back by the TLB.
| Ground and trench | Machine | If it does this a day | Machine cost per metre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft, sandy ground; about 0.6 m wide × 0.8 m deep (water or cable) | TLB | 100 m | R39–R52 |
| Firm ground or dry clay; about 0.6 m wide × 1 m deep | TLB | 80 m | R49–R64 |
| Wet clay, stony ground, or many services to dig around | TLB | 40 m | R98–R129 |
| Rock or hard calcrete, broken out | TLB with breaker | 15 m | R334–R437 |
| Tight yard, soft ground; about 0.4 m wide × 0.6 m deep | Mini excavator | 50 m | R34–R60 |
| Deep sewer line, 2–3 m deep, shored | 20–25 t excavator | 30 m | R117–R186 |
Read it the other way round too: if your trench is 40 m long in firm ground, it's still a day's hire (or a short day with a minimum), so the per-metre cost of a short trench is higher. Short trenches are priced by the job, long ones by the metre-per-day maths.
Why the metres per day change so much
- Depth and width: a trench 0.6 m wide and 1 m deep is 0.6 m³ of soil per metre; at 0.45 m by 0.6 m it's 0.27 m³, less than half. The trench comes out about as wide as the bucket; a 24-inch (610 mm) bucket is a common general bucket on a TLB (JCB 3CX or similar). Ask for the narrowest bucket the pipe and bedding allow.
- Ground: sand digs fast but its sides run in; dry clay digs well and stands; wet clay is slow and sticky; rock needs a breaker. See the trenching guide.
- Services: where existing pipes and cables cross the line, the operator slows down and the last bit is dug by hand. A crowded yard can halve the day's metres.
- Shoring: Construction Regulation 13 bars anyone from working in a trench that isn't shored, braced or sloped back safely, unless a competent person has confirmed the ground in writing. Deep trenches with shoring go much slower.
- Roots, rubble and old foundations in the line.
- Where the spoil goes: kept beside the trench, it goes straight back. Carted away and brought back, it adds a tipper and time.
Trenching cost calculator: work it out in four steps
- Machine days = trench length ÷ metres a day for your ground (use the table above), rounded up to a half or full day.
- Machine cost = machine days × the day rate.
- Add transport both ways: the TLB drives to site, so inside a main centre it's small and confirmed with your price; out of town it's per kilometre.
- Add compaction and materials: a rammer for the days of backfilling, bedding sand, and a tipper if spoil must leave site.
Example: a 200 m water line near Brits
A 200 m farm water line, about 1 m deep in firm ground. At 80 m a day that's 2.5 days, booked as three TLB days:
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard 4x4 TLB (about 8 t), 3 days at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator | R11,700–R15,450 |
| Transport both ways to Brits | R4,560–R5,520 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R16,260–R20,970 |
The TLB part works out at R58–R77 a metre (three days ÷ 200 m), with transport of R4,560–R5,520 spread over the job. A rammer for the same three days adds R1,050–R1,410 plus its delivery. Brits is 53 km from Pretoria by road.
Backfill and compaction costs
A trench that isn't compacted sinks, and paving, driveways and road crossings over it crack. Backfill goes back in thin layers, each compacted before the next, to the layer thickness and density your engineer or the municipality's specification asks for.
| Size | Rate | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Rammer (trench compactor) | Per day, machine only | R350–R470 |
- Rammer (trench compactor): the narrow foot fits inside a trench. Example only: if it compacts 100 m of backfill a day, it adds about R4–R5 a metre.
- Reversible plate compactor (R400–R630 a day) for wider trenches and the surface layer under paving.
- Bedding sand under and around pipes and cables, ordered by the cube and delivered by tipper.
- Water: soil compacts best slightly damp. A hose does it on a small job; on a long line, a water truck.
- Extra spoil: the pipe and bedding take up room, so some soil is left over. Spread it on site or cart it away.
Compactor prices for every size are on roller and compactor hire rates.
Cable, fibre and micro trenching costs
- Cable trenching: priced like any trench, by machine day. The depth comes from your electrician, who signs off the installation. Narrow cable trenches in soft ground are among the fastest per metre.
- Fibre trenching: follows the fibre company's design and the municipal wayleave, usually in a road reserve or pavement. A mini excavator suits pavements with services close together.
- Micro trenching: a saw cuts a thin slot in the road or pavement surface for the duct. In Cape Town it needs a wayleave like any other trenching on municipal ground.
- Chain trenchers: quick on long, straight runs in soft, stone-free ground; priced on WhatsApp.
To hire a trenching machine you pay the day rates above; the machine's purchase price doesn't come into it. Small trenchers and breakers are on jackhammer, compressor and trencher hire prices.
Costs to plan for besides the machine
- Wayleave for any trench in a road reserve or pavement: from the Johannesburg Roads Agency in Johannesburg; in Cape Town under the Wayleaves By-law, 2026, with a wayleave and a permit to work before excavation. Allow for the municipality's fees and lead time.
- Locating services: municipal service plans, a cable detector, or a test hole dug by hand before the machine goes near.
- Shoring or sloping for any trench people must work in.
- Inspection of foundation trenches: the National Building Regulations require notice to the municipality when foundation trenches are ready, and no concrete until the inspector approves them. A machine standing while you wait is standing time.
- Tip fees if spoil goes to a landfill.
The rules in detail, and how we dig trenches safely, are on trenching machine hire. Booking works the same as any machine: see how it works.

How much does trenching cost per metre in South Africa?
Worked from our TLB day rate of R3,900–R5,150: about R39–R52 a metre if the TLB digs and backfills 100 m in a day in soft ground, R49–R64 at 80 m a day in firm ground, and R98–R129 at 40 m a day in wet clay or stony ground. These are examples on stated assumptions; send the length, depth and a photo for a written price.
What does trenching and backfilling cost?
With a TLB, backfilling is in the same machine time: it digs with the backhoe and pushes the soil back with the front bucket. Add a rammer at R350–R470 a day machine only to compact the backfill in layers, transport both ways, and any bedding sand the pipe or cable needs.
How many metres of trench can a TLB dig in a day?
It depends on the depth, width, ground and how many services must be dug around by hand. On an open site in soft ground, a shallow trench goes much faster than a 1 m deep trench in clay, and rock may need a breaker. We plan from your length, depth and ground, and price by the day so you aren't paying for guesses.
Is a mini excavator cheaper for trenching?
Per day, yes: R1,700–R3,000 against R3,900–R5,150 for a TLB. Per metre, often not, because a mini excavator digs fewer metres a day and comes on a trailer with its own transport line. Use it where a TLB can't get in or the lawn and paving must survive.
How much does a trenching machine cost to hire?
A TLB with an operator is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, a mini excavator R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator and a 20–25 t excavator R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator. Walk-behind and ride-on chain trenchers are priced on WhatsApp.
Do I need a wayleave for a cable or fibre trench?
On your own property, usually not, but find the underground services first. Any trench in a road reserve or pavement needs municipal permission: in Johannesburg from the Johannesburg Roads Agency, and in Cape Town under the Wayleaves By-law, 2026, which also covers micro-trenching.
