Bloemfontein is one of the main centres we send machines from. The mobile crane drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. With only a few price points for mobile cranes, treat the table as a guide; the written price for your lift follows once we know the weight, the reach and the place. The Free State is maize, wheat, sunflower and cattle country, and a large share of crane calls from Bloemfontein come from farms. What to send us for each kind of job:
| Farm job | Send us | Usual machine |
|---|---|---|
| Steel water tank onto a tower | Tank size, empty mass, tower height | 20–25 t crane |
| Shed or barn portal frames | Span, heaviest rafter, eaves height | 25 t or 40 t crane |
| Grain bin or silo sections | Section mass and the height they go to | 40 t or 80–90 t crane |
| Generator, pump set or transformer onto a plinth | Nameplate mass, distance from the truck | 8–10 t crane truck |
Height is the usual catch on farms: the boom has to clear the top of a tower or bin, and a longer boom lifts less at the same radius. Out of town, travel is its own line; here is an example for a day's lift on the goldfields:
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| 20–25 t mobile crane, 1 day at about R4,500 a day with operator | R4,500 |
| Transport both ways to Welkom | R14,700–R17,780 |
| Example total, excl. VAT | R19,200–R22,280 |
Warehouses on the N1, N6 and N8
Bloemfontein is the Free State's capital and a crossroads: the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town passes it, the N8 runs west to Kimberley and east to the Lesotho border, and the N6 starts here for East London. Depots and distribution centres along those routes hire cranes for the lifts a forklift can't reach: steel for new warehouse bays, rooftop plant, dock levellers, generators and containers. Hospitals, government buildings and shopping centres add rooftop aircon and lift-motor work. For portal frames where the rafters land 15–20 m out, the 40 t (3.0 t at 20 m) is the safer pick over the 25 t (2.15 t).
Storms, clay and koppies
Afternoon thunderstorms
Bloemfontein's rain falls between October and March, mostly in short, heavy afternoon storms. Lightning and gust fronts stop a lift long before the rain does, so plan the big lifts for the morning. Winters are dry and frosty, and the crane works fine on cold mornings once the ground is firm.
Clay that swells and shrinks
Large parts of the city sit on clay that swells when wet and cracks as it dries. Dry, it carries outrigger mats well. After a storm it softens, and an outrigger of the 25 t crane can push down up to 26.9 t, so wet clay needs larger mats or a gravel pad.
Dolerite on the rises
Dolerite intrusions run through and around the city, and where they surface, on rises and koppies, the rock is firm but rarely flat. The crane must stand level, so on a rise it often sets up lower down and reaches further.
Permission, power lines and certificates
If the crane stands on a public road or pavement, you need Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality's permission and traffic control on the day. On farms, check for overhead lines along the route and near the lift: nobody may come inside a line's safety clearance without permission from Eskom or whoever runs the line (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19).
Each crane we send carries a load test by a registered lifting machinery entity no more than 12 months old (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18), and you keep those records on site while you use it; we send copies first if you ask. The operator is certified for the crane's class (C33 up to 50 t, C35 above). For blind lifts, such as tanks onto towers behind sheds, a banksman signals and a rigger slings the load, priced as their own line if you need them. See safety and certificates.

What does crane hire cost in Bloemfontein?
about R4,500 a day for a 20–25 t mobile crane, about R7,600 for 40 t and about R22,000 for 80 t, operator included, excluding VAT. In Mangaung travel is small; to farms and other towns it's per kilometre each way.
Will you bring a crane out to my farm?
Yes. Send the farm's location, the load's mass and a photo of the ground where the crane will stand. A mobile crane needs a firm, level spot and a road it can drive in on: the 25 t crane weighs about 25.6 t on two axles, so a soft farm track after rain may stop it.
Do thunderstorms stop crane work?
Lightning and gusts do. When a storm builds, the operator lowers the load and stops until it passes. Book big lifts for the morning in summer, before the afternoon storms.
How much is a crane truck per day in Bloemfontein?
An 8–10 t crane truck with operator is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator or about R1,000 an hour; a 12–15 t is R3,200–R5,200 a day. See crane truck hire.
