Steel and heavy industry
The Vaal Triangle (Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg) is built around steel and chemicals. ArcelorMittal South Africa has its head office and its flat-steel works in Vanderbijlpark; its long-steel business, which included the Vereeniging and Newcastle works, went into care and maintenance in 2025. Around the works are engineering shops, steel merchants, fabricators and transport yards, and across the river Sasolburg's chemical plants.
That shapes what gets hired here: crane trucks to move machinery and offload steel, generators for shutdowns and outages, breaker TLBs to cut out worn factory floors and yards, cherry pickers for roof and crane-gantry maintenance, and side tippers on monthly contracts hauling aggregate, slag and coal.
The Vaal River and summer storms
Vereeniging lies on the Vaal River, with riverside suburbs and plots upstream at Three Rivers and downstream towards Vanderbijlpark and Parys. Gauteng's rain normally falls between October and March (South African Weather Service), and heavy summer rain raises the river. Low riverbank plots turn to mud first: book big digs on them for the dry months, and ask about standing time on summer jobs.
Digging in the river, on its bank or in a wetland can be a water use that needs authorisation from the Department of Water and Sanitation. If your job is a jetty footing, a slipway or bank protection, check that before booking; our machines start once it's sorted.
Three municipalities, three wayleave offices
A trench across a pavement or into the street is road-reserve work and needs a wayleave first. In the Vaal that means Emfuleni (Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Sebokeng, Evaton, Sharpeville), Midvaal (Meyerton and the smallholdings towards Henley on Klip) or, across the river, Metsimaholo in the Free State (Sasolburg). Have the wayleave and the positions of underground services on site when the machine arrives.
TLB hire in Vereeniging
A TLB for hire in Vereeniging costs R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry. The standard 4x4 machine (JCB 3CX or similar) digs to about 4.4–4.8 m, loads tippers with its front bucket and backfills in the same visit. Vereeniging is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
What TLBs do in the Vaal
- House extensions and backyard rooms in Sebokeng, Evaton, Sharpeville and Boipatong: strip footings, sewer connections and levelling the yard. One TLB day usually covers the footings and the connection trench.
- Suburban work in Three Rivers, Arcon Park and Peacehaven: pools, boundary-wall footings, paving and drainage.
- Riverside plots: water lines from the pump or borehole, conservancy and septic tank holes on plots not on the sewer, and clearing for sheds and lapas.
- Industrial yards in Duncanville and the Vaal's other industrial areas: yard drainage, cable and pipe trenches, and breaking out old concrete with a breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator).
For a new house or extension, you must give the municipality a date when the foundation trenches will be ready for inspection, and no concrete may go in until they are inspected and approved, unless the inspector hasn't come by the end of that working day (National Building Regulations, regulation A22). Plan the TLB so the trenches are open and clean on inspection day. Nobody works inside a deep trench unless its sides are shored, braced or sloped back, or a competent person has confirmed in writing that the ground is stable (Construction Regulations, 2014, regulation 13).
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |

Generator hire in Vereeniging
Generators in the Vaal power factory lines and workshops through outages, give building sites power before the connection is live, and run riverside weddings and events. Prices are for the machine; you pay the diesel.
| Size | Typical Vaal job | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| Portable, up to 10 kVA | Hand tools, lights, a market stall, a house's essentials | R320–R520 |
| 15–30 kVA | A house with geyser and pump, a small site, a small event | R680–R1,600 |
| 40–60 kVA | A building site's distribution board, a marquee event, a small workshop | R2,300–R3,050 |
| 80–150 kVA | An engineering shop with welders and machines, a shop or office block | R2,400–R4,600 |
| 200–300 kVA | A factory line, a cold store, a larger plant | R8,500–R9,750 |
| 500–750 kVA | Big plants and shutdown work | R14,000–R18,000 |
Site generators from 15–30 kVA up give three-phase 400 V for motors and welders. Plugging tools into the generator's own sockets needs no electrician, but feeding a building's wiring does: under the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009 a registered person must control the installation work and only a registered person may issue the certificate of compliance. Transport there and back in Vereeniging is R1,300–R3,840. All sizes and diesel use: generator hire rates; Gauteng's biggest centre: generator hire in Johannesburg.
Crane truck hire in Vereeniging
A crane truck carries the load and lifts it on and off with its own crane, which suits the Vaal's steel and workshop trade: moving a lathe or press between workshops, offloading steel sections, placing a generator or transformer on a plinth, and lifting water tanks, prefab rooms and boats.
| Crane class | Typical job | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 8–10 t | Tanks, trusses, small machines, steel bundles | R2,500–R5,200 a day |
| 12–15 t | Heavier machinery, prefab units, longer reach | R3,200–R5,200 a day |
| 20–34 t | Heavy machines and long-reach lifts | about R1,900 an hour |
The crane's rated load falls as the boom reaches out, so send us the weight, how far it must reach from where the truck can stand, and photos of the access. A crane truck is a lifting machine: it needs a performance (load) test by a registered lifting machinery entity at least every 12 months, and its operator a certificate from an accredited training provider (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). Copies come before the truck arrives, on request. Vereeniging is one of the main centres we send machines from. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.

Bobcats and cherry pickers
A bobcat is R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator for clearing yards, loading rubble and spreading gravel. A 12–15 m cherry picker is R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator for warehouse lights, signage and roof sheeting, with a certified operator and a current load-test certificate.
Towns we reach from Vereeniging
Vanderbijlpark
The steel town on the western side of the Triangle, with ArcelorMittal's head office, engineering works and industrial stands, plus Bophelong and Boipatong. Crane trucks, forklifts and generators are hired here as often as TLBs. Vanderbijlpark is about 12 km from Vereeniging by road, inside our normal delivery area. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
Meyerton and Midvaal
Midvaal is plots and farms as much as town: graders for gravel roads, TLBs for stables and sheds, and excavators for cleaning out farm dams. A 140-class grader is R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator. Meyerton is about 21 km from Vereeniging by road, inside our normal delivery area. Transport for a grader there and back usually comes to R6,000–R9,500, shown as its own line on your quote.
Sasolburg
Across the river in the Free State, Sasolburg's chemical plants and their contractors hire crane trucks, generators and cherry pickers for maintenance and shutdowns. Plant sites set their own entry rules, so send us the site's induction and permit requirements with the booking. Sasolburg is about 24 km from Vereeniging by road, inside our normal delivery area. The crane truck drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
Parys
A Vaal River town further downstream, with guest houses, riverside plots and farms. TLBs for water lines and foundations, bobcats for landscaping. Parys is about 60 km from Vereeniging by road. Transport for a TLB there and back usually comes to R5,160–R6,240, shown as its own line on your quote. More Free State towns: plant hire in the Free State.

WhatsApp your Vaal jobQuestions people ask
How much does a TLB cost in Vereeniging?
R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry (operator included, you pay the diesel). With a hydraulic breaker for rock and old concrete it's R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator. The TLB drives to site, so inside Vereeniging travel is small and confirmed with your price. Prices exclude VAT.
Do you send machines across the river to Sasolburg and Parys?
Yes. Sasolburg and Parys are in the Free State but are worked from Vereeniging. Sasolburg is about 24 km from Vereeniging by road, inside our normal delivery area, and Parys is about 60 km from Vereeniging by road. Machines that drive (TLBs, tippers, crane trucks) go by road; transport is shown as its own line on your quote.
Who gives permission to dig in a road reserve in Vereeniging?
Your local municipality: Emfuleni for Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, Midvaal for Meyerton and the plots towards Henley on Klip, and Metsimaholo for Sasolburg across the river. Apply for the wayleave before the booking date and have it on site when the machine arrives. Inside your own boundary no wayleave is needed.
Can a generator run my whole factory or workshop?
Usually, if it's sized from your real load. Send us the motors, welders and machines that must run at the same time, and whether you need three-phase. As a rough guide, 80–150 kVA (R2,400–R4,600 a day) runs a small workshop and 200–300 kVA (R8,500–R9,750 a day) a bigger plant, machine only. A registered electrician connects it through a changeover switch.
