What it costs to hire a generator in Johannesburg
Pick the line closest to your job. Prices are per day, machine only (no operator, no diesel), excluding VAT.
| The job | Size we usually send | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| House essentials in a power cut, a few tools | Portable, up to 10 kVA | R320–R520 |
| Film or photo shoot: lights, monitors, unit base | 15–30 kVA, silent | R680–R1,600 |
| Building site: welders, mixer, breakers, site office | 40–60 kVA | R2,300–R3,050 |
| Expo stand, marquee event or concert stage | 80–150 kVA | R2,400–R4,600 |
| Office block or block of flats through an outage | 200–300 kVA | R8,500–R9,750 |
| Mine plant, shaft-area camp or a large site | 500–750 kVA, or 1,000 kVA+ | R14,000–R18,000 |
On the big sets, diesel outweighs the hire. A 250 kVA set (Cummins C275 D5 or similar) burns 25.8 litres an hour at half load and 52.5 flat out, from the maker's data sheet. Eight hours at half load is about 206 litres, roughly R6,595 at October 2026's official Gauteng diesel price. Weekly and monthly rates are on WhatsApp; every size is on generator hire rates.

Joburg's streets, rooftops and warehouses are busy film locations, and its expo halls, stadiums and parks host events most weekends. Both need power where there's no socket, quietly.
- Sound: canopied sets (Atlas Copco QAS range or similar) measure 59 dB(A) at 7 m for a 14 kVA and 62 dB(A) for a 60 kVA, from the maker's data. Park the set round a corner or behind a truck, on a long cable run, and the recordist won't hear it.
- Neighbours: Gauteng's Noise Control Regulations, 1999 list a power generator as "plant", and a noise nuisance is any sound that disturbs, or may disturb, the peace of any person. On residential streets, agree running hours with the location manager.
- Exhaust: diesel exhaust carries carbon monoxide. Keep the set outside tents and studios, with the exhaust away from doors and crowds, and a fire extinguisher beside it.
Building sites and outages in the city
Inner-city conversions in the CBD, Braamfontein and Doornfontein, and new offices and flats from Sandton to Midrand, run welders, hoists and site offices off hired sets until the permanent supply is live. Offices, clinics and blocks of flats hire bigger sets through outages and planned maintenance on the city's supply.
Plan refuelling from the tank size: a 100 kVA set (Atlas Copco QAS 100 or similar) runs about 9 hours on its 220-litre tank at full load, so a building on generator day and night needs two refuels a day. If the set feeds a DB board, your registered electrician fits the changeover switch and signs the certificate of compliance, as the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009 require.
Generators for mines on the West Rand
Gold mining still runs south-west of the city. Harmony's Mponeng, on the West Rand near Carletonville about 90 km from Johannesburg, mines between 3,160 m and 3,740 m below surface and is the deepest mine in the world. Mines and their contractors hire 500–1,000 kVA sets for site camps, pumping, workshops and commissioning new plant.
Carletonville is about 82 km from Johannesburg by road. Transport for a generator there and back usually comes to R7,060–R8,520, shown as its own line on your quote. Sets this size travel on a truck with a crane, so tell us how close the truck can get. Mines run their own inductions and permits to work: send them with the booking. Monthly mining contracts are on mining plant hire.
Running a generator at 1,750 metres
Johannesburg sits about 1,750 m above sea level. Atlas Copco's sizing guide explains why that matters: the higher the site, the less oxygen in the air and the less power the engine gives, so every set's output is read off the maker's derating table for altitude and temperature. We size Joburg jobs from that derated figure. Don't oversize either: the same guide warns against long runs below 30% load, which build up carbon and unburned fuel in the exhaust ("wet stacking").
Summer brings the other risk. Johannesburg's rain falls from October to March (South African Weather Service), in short, heavy afternoon storms: stop refuelling when lightning is close, keep cable joints off wet ground, and stand the set where water doesn't run.

How much does it cost to hire a generator in Johannesburg?
R320–R520 a day for a portable, R680–R1,600 for 15–30 kVA, R2,300–R3,050 for 40–60 kVA and up to R24,000–R27,500 for 1,000 kVA and over, machine only and excluding VAT. Diesel and transport (R1,300–R3,840 there and back in the city) are extra.
Can I hire a silent generator for a film shoot in Joburg?
Yes. Sets above portable size come in sound-proofed canopies: about 62 dB(A) at 7 m for a 60 kVA (Atlas Copco QAS 60 or similar). Most shoots run lights, monitors and unit base on a 15–30 kVA or 40–60 kVA set parked well away from the microphones on a long cable.
Do you send generators to mines on the West Rand?
Yes, for site camps, pumps, workshops and commissioning, up to 1,000 kVA and more. Send the mine's induction and access requirements with your booking. Carletonville is about 82 km from Johannesburg, so transport there is worked on the road distance: R7,060–R8,520 there and back.
