3 phase generator hire in Durban

Three-phase 400 V runs motors, compressors, welders, pumps, cold rooms and a building's DB board. Every set from 15–30 kVA up gives it, with 230 V sockets as well; portables up to 10 kVA are single-phase only.

The hard part is starting motors. A motor pulls a big surge of current for a few seconds as it starts, and the generator's alternator has to carry it. Atlas Copco's sizing guide puts numbers to it: a self-excited (shunt) alternator handles about 180% overload, while a PMG or AREP alternator handles 300% for up to 10 seconds, so it starts the same motor on a smaller set. Tell us the kW of the biggest motor and how it starts (direct or soft-start), and we send the right set.

Feeding a building's wiring is electrical installation work: your registered electrician fits the changeover switch and issues the certificate of compliance (Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009).

The diesel bill at Durban's coastal price

Diesel is cheaper on the coast than inland. The official wholesale list price for 0.05% sulphur diesel from 7 October 2026 is 3,108.29 cents a litre at the coast, against 3,195.49 in Gauteng; the pump price is higher, and both change monthly.

A 60 kVA set (Atlas Copco QAS 60 or similar) burns 13.4 litres an hour at full load, about 107 litres in 8 hours: roughly R3,332 at the coastal list price, more than the day's hire of R2,300–R3,050. Don't oversize to be safe, though. The same Atlas Copco guide warns against long running below 30% load, which leaves carbon and unburned fuel in the exhaust ("wet stacking").

Humidity, salt air and summer storms

Durban is in the summer-rainfall east, where the South African Weather Service puts the season from October to March, and heavy rain can come outside it: the April 2022 floods failed an embankment on the N2. Summers are hot and humid, and close to the beachfront, the Bluff and the harbour the air carries salt.

  • Stand the set on firm ground above any low spot where stormwater runs or pools.
  • Keep the canopy doors shut so salt and damp stay off the alternator and terminals, and raise cable joints off the ground.
  • Refuel from clean, dry containers: water in the diesel blocks filters and stops the engine.

Where Durban hires generators

Events on the beachfront, in parks and at sports fields, where marquees need lights, sound and catering power. Building sites in the developments north of the city, up to Ballito: Ballito is about 50 km from Durban by road. Transport for a generator there and back usually comes to R4,300–R5,200, shown as its own line on your quote. Industry in the port-side areas south of the harbour, for workshops, welding and planned shutdowns. Backup for shops, surgeries and offices during outages. South of the city, Amanzimtoti is about 27 km from Durban by road, inside our normal delivery area, so transport is the in-city rate.
