Plant hire in the Nelspruit area: what the Lowveld asks for
Mbombela is the capital of Mpumalanga and the gateway to the Lowveld. The work here is different from the coal towns on the Highveld:
- Farms. Mbombela is the centre of a big citrus-farming area, with orchards and other farms in the fertile Crocodile River valley around it. Farms hire graders for orchard roads, TLBs and excavators for irrigation lines, dams and packhouse foundations, and forklifts for packing season.
- The N4 corridor. Mpumalanga is the gateway to eSwatini and Mozambique, and the N4 through Mbombela is the road to the Maputo port. In 2022, when rail and port backlogs built up, chrome producers trucked ore from Johannesburg and Rustenburg to Maputo through Mbombela. Warehouses, truck yards and workshops along the corridor hire forklifts, crane trucks and TLBs.
- The city. Government offices, shopping centres, schools and housing estates: cherry pickers for signage and maintenance, generators for sites and events, TLBs and mini excavators for building.
Hills, rock and slopes
Mbombela is hilly and sits on granite: the Crocodile River cuts into granite bedrock right in the city, and rock and boulders can turn up in foundations and trenches. Where a trench meets rock, the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) or an excavator with a breaker saves a second visit. On steep stands, a TLB working across the slope is less stable: plan a level bench for the machine, or use a mini excavator. Send photos of the slope and the access with your booking so we send the right machine first time.
Hot, wet summers
The Lowveld gets most of its rain in summer, from about October to March, often in heavy storms, and summer days are hot: over 40 °C is not unusual. Clay soils turn slippery after rain, so on steep access roads a loaded tipper may not get up until the ground dries. Plan earthworks for the dry winter where you can, and agree standing time for rain days on summer jobs.
Rivers and streams
The Crocodile River flows through the city, past the botanical garden and the industrial area, and many farms and plots border streams. Water resources here are managed by the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency; check with them before any dam, crossing or trench in or next to a watercourse.
TLB hire in Nelspruit
A standard TLB is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry. Typical Mbombela jobs: house foundations and retaining-wall footings on sloping stands, sewer and water connections, irrigation mainlines on farms, and clearing plots. Mbombela (Nelspruit) is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. | Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard 4x4 TLB (about 8 t), 2 days at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator | R7,800–R10,300 |
| Transport to White River | confirmed on WhatsApp |
Grader for hire in Nelspruit
Orchard and plantation roads wash out in summer storms, and gravel roads on farms and estates need regrading and new camber so water runs off. A 120-class grader is R3,900–R4,400 a day with operator, a 140-class R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator, and short jobs run at R490–R610 an hour. Add a roller (R2,150–R5,600 a day with operator for 10–12 t) and a water truck for a road that lasts. The grader comes on a lowbed: R6,000–R9,500 there and back in Mbombela. See grader hire and gravel roads and driveways.
Cherry picker hire in Nelspruit
Signage and lights on shopping centres and warehouses, gutters and roof sheeting, painting, and tree work in gardens and on estates. A 12–15 m cherry picker is R2,400–R4,000 a day with operator, a 16–17 m R4,150–R7,900 a day, and a 20–25 m about R8,200 a day, each with a certified operator and a load-test certificate not older than 12 months. Week and month rates are on cherry picker hire rates.
Lowveld trees grow fast and often reach power lines. Nobody may come inside a line's safety clearance without permission from the utility that runs it (Electrical Machinery Regulations, reg 19), so arrange tree work near lines with Eskom or the municipality first. Mbombela (Nelspruit) is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a cherry picker there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote.
Forklift hire in Nelspruit
Forklifts for packing season on citrus farms, warehouses along the N4, builders' merchants and stock moves: R940–R1,600 a day for 1–2 t, R1,150–R1,600 for 2.5–3 t and R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only. A month on a 3.5–5 t is about R30,000. Our operator can be added to your written price. On rough packhouse yards and gravel, ask for a forklift with pneumatic tyres. The driver needs a forklift operator certificate from an accredited training provider. Mbombela (Nelspruit) is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote. See forklift hire.
Generator hire in Nelspruit
Site power before the connection is live, backup for packhouses and cold rooms, pumps on farms, and power for events. Machine only, per day:
| Size | Typical use | Per day |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 kVA | Hand tools, small sites, a stall | R320–R520 |
| 15–30 kVA | A house build, an office, a small event | R680–R1,600 |
| 40–60 kVA | A shop, a borehole pump, a bigger event | R2,300–R3,050 |
| 80–150 kVA | Cold rooms, a packhouse line, a site office block | R2,400–R4,600 |
Hooking a generator into a building's wiring needs a changeover switch fitted by an electrician, so it can't feed back into the Eskom or municipal line. Transport there and back in Mbombela is R1,300–R3,840. See generator hire rates.

Do I need permission to dig near a river in the Lowveld?
Check before you dig in or next to a river, stream or wetland. Water resources in this catchment are managed by the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency, and work in a watercourse can need water use authorisation. On your own stand away from water, you only need the positions of underground services before we dig.
