What TLBs do in the Lowveld

  • Orchards and packhouses

Citrus farms around the city, the centre of a big citrus-farming area, book TLBs for irrigation mainlines, small dams and silt traps, and packhouse and cold-room foundations.

  • Estates on the hills

Foundations, retaining-wall footings, pools and driveway cuts on sloping stands in Mbombela's suburbs and estates, where the house usually steps down the hill.

  • White River plots

Water lines from boreholes, terracing and foundations on plots and small farms north of the city. White River is about 20 km from Mbombela (Nelspruit) by road, inside our normal delivery area. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.

  • Town services

Sewer and water connections, cable trenches and stormwater channels, with a wayleave from the municipality for any trench in a road reserve.

Granite boulders, clay and steep stands

Mbombela is hilly country on granite (the Crocodile River cuts into granite bedrock in the city), and boulders turn up in foundations and trenches without warning. A standard bucket rolls small ones out; big ones need the breaker TLB, or an excavator with a hammer, to avoid a second visit. If boulders show at the surface, book the breaker from the start.

Clay soils turn slippery after rain, and on a steep access road a loaded tipper may not climb until it dries. The TLB itself is less stable working across a slope, so on a steep stand the operator first cuts a level bench to dig from. Where there is no room for a bench, a tracked mini excavator (Bobcat E35z or similar, about 3.1 m dig depth, R1,700–R3,000 a day with operator) works across the slope more safely. Send photos of the slope and the access road with your request.

Summer storms and the rivers

The Lowveld gets its rain in summer, from about October to March (South African Weather Service), often in heavy storms on hot days. Dig early, backfill the same day and agree standing time for rain days on summer jobs; earthworks run smoothest in the dry winter.

When a TLB isn't the right machine

A farm dam wall, a long cut through granite or a packhouse terrace with thousands of cubes to move goes faster with a 20–25 t excavator (R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator), which reaches about 6.7 m against the TLB's 4.45 m. Cleaning packhouse yards and spreading gravel between orchard rows is bobcat work (R2,400–R3,700 a day with operator). Farm roads that wash out every summer need a grader to restore the camber.

The Crocodile River flows through the city and many farms border streams. Before any dam wall, crossing or trench in or next to a watercourse, check with the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency.

Questions people ask

Can a TLB lay an irrigation mainline on a Lowveld farm?

Yes. A standard TLB digs the trench, lifts the spoil to one side and backfills over the pipe once it is laid and tested, and it travels between blocks on its own wheels. For kilometres of line, a week's booking (R19,500–R25,750) is the usual way to price it.

Do I need permission to dig next to a stream or the Crocodile River?

Check before you dig. Water resources in this catchment are managed by the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency, and work in or next to a watercourse can need water use authorisation. A trench on your own stand away from water only needs the positions of underground services.

Do you send TLBs to Barberton and Hazyview?

Yes, with travel both ways as its own line. Barberton: R3,780–R4,580. Hazyview is priced the same way, on the road distance from Mbombela.
