Packhouses, cold rooms and orchards

Mbombela, the capital of Mpumalanga, is the centre of a big citrus-farming area in the Crocodile River valley. Farm crane work peaks before the packing season:

• Packhouse steel

  Columns, rafters and roof sheeting for new packhouses and extensions. Long spans usually need the 40 t, which lifts 3.0 t at 20 m.

• Cold rooms and refrigeration

  Condensers and cooling units onto roofs and frames, and insulated panels lifted in packs. Panels catch wind, so they go up in calm morning hours.

• Sorting lines and machinery

  Graders, washers and packing machines lifted into buildings through roof openings or wide doors.

• Irrigation and water

  Steel tanks onto stands, pump sets and transformers onto plinths. Many of these are crane-truck loads: about 2.9 t at 9.9 m, carried in on the truck's own deck.

Hills, granite and wet clay

Mbombela is hilly and sits on granite; the Crocodile River cuts into granite bedrock in the city. Granite gives a firm base but steep stands, and a crane must be level to lift to its chart, so on a slope it usually sets up on the road and reaches across. Fully out, the 25 t crane's outriggers need 6.6 m of width; pulled in to 3.6 m on a narrow road, its lift at 10 m falls from 7.8 t to 3.2 t.

Clay soils turn slippery after rain, and the Lowveld gets most of its rain in heavy afternoon storms from about October to March. A loaded crane may not climb a steep wet access road, and soft clay can't carry an outrigger load of up to 26.9 t on a small mat. In summer, book lifts for the morning and send photos of the access road with your request.

Load test, operator and lifting crew

Our cranes carry a performance (load) test by a registered lifting machinery entity no older than 12 months (Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, reg 18). You, as user of the hired crane, keep its latest test and service records on site; we send copies ahead if you ask. Operators hold the accredited certificate for the crane's class, C33 up to 50 t and C35 above. A rigger slings the load and a banksman signals when the operator can't see it, such as over a packhouse roof; if your team doesn't have them, they go on your quote.
