A town built on coal
eMalahleni means "place of coal", and the town sits in the middle of the Highveld coalfield on the coal-bearing Karoo Basin. Collieries, Eskom power stations (Duvha about 15 km east, Kendal about 40 km south-west) and engineering works surround the suburbs, so a plant hire job here can be a pool dig in a suburb one day and a haul road on a mine the next.
Old workings under parts of town
The Witbank coalfield has been mined underground since the early 1900s, and some old shallow bord-and-pillar workings have collapsed into subsidence and crownholes at the surface. Before heavy foundations, deep trenches, a dam or a crane set-up near old mine land, ask your engineer or the municipality whether the stand is undermined. Send us the engineer's notes with the booking; our operators keep machines off ground the engineer has ruled out.
Acid water in open excavations
Government lists various Mpumalanga coalfields among the areas with acid rock drainage. Water that collects in an excavation on or next to mine land can be acidic, so agree where pumped water goes before we start, and keep it out of streams.
Summer storms, October to March
eMalahleni gets its rain in summer, mostly between October and March, often as hard afternoon thunderstorms. Clay on unsurfaced sites turns to mud fast, open trenches fill, and loaded tippers stop. Big earthworks go fastest from April to September; in summer, agree standing time on day-rate jobs when we quote.
Coal trucks on the roads
Coal trucks are a fact of life on the roads around eMalahleni: Eskom moves coal over about 3,200 km of Mpumalanga roads with a fleet of more than 2,000 trucks. If your site entrance is on one of these routes, plan where a lowbed can stop and turn safely, and tell us when you book so the driver plans the stop.
Working at the mines and plants
On construction sites, mobile plant must be driven by competent operators and inspected daily before use (Construction Regulations, reg 23). On a mine, our operators work under the mine's own medicals, induction and traffic rules. Cranes and crane trucks come with a load-test certificate not older than 12 months (Driven Machinery Regulations, reg 18).
TLB hire in Witbank
A standard TLB (JCB 3CX or similar) is R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator, or R320–R410 an hour dry. It digs a trench to about 4 m, loads the spoil and backfills with the front bucket, so one machine does the whole job. In eMalahleni that means house extensions and pool digs in the suburbs, sewer and water connections, foundations for workshops in the industrial areas, and cleaning spillage and drains at mines and plants.
Where old concrete or a hard layer must come out first, book the breaker TLB (R5,000–R6,550 a day with operator) from the start. For a TLB by the month on a mine or plant, it's about R68,000 a month (about 200 machine hours) dry on about 200 hours. eMalahleni (Witbank) is one of the main centres we send machines from. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price. More on TLB hire.
| Example quote (for illustration only) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Standard 4x4 TLB (about 8 t), 3 days at R3,900–R5,150 a day with operator | R11,700–R15,450 |

Yellow machine plant hire in Witbank
"Yellow machines" are the earthmoving plant: excavators, loaders, dozers, graders and ADTs. eMalahleni hires them for two kinds of work: short building and civil jobs by the day, and mine contracts by the month on about 200 machine hours.
Excavator for hire in Witbank
A 20–25 t excavator (CAT 320 or similar) is R3,500–R5,600 a day with operator or R340–R690 an hour, for bulk excavation, sewer lines, dams and stormwater. On mines, a 36–55 t machine loading trucks is R6,500–R8,100 a day with operator, and a 70 t+ machine runs at about R189,000 a month (about 200 machine hours) dry. It comes on a lowbed: R6,000–R9,500 there and back inside eMalahleni. See excavator hire rates.
Front end loader hire in Witbank
Loading tippers at stockpiles, feeding crushers and screens, and managing coal stockpiles at sidings: a 950-class loader (1.5–3.5 m³ bucket) is R3,400–R3,800 a day with operator and a 966-class (3.5–4.5 m³) about R6,200 a day. Transport there and back inside eMalahleni is R6,000–R9,500. See front end loader hire.
Dozer hire in Witbank
Dozers push and shape coal stockpiles and discard dumps, rip hard ground and reshape land for rehabilitation. A D6-class is R5,000–R7,750 a day with operator, a D8-class about R8,200 a day and a D9-class R9,800–R11,000 a day. See bulldozer hire.
Grader for hire in Witbank
Haul roads, farm and plot roads, and layerworks on new roads and yards: a 140-class grader (CAT 140 or similar) is R4,500–R6,000 a day with operator, or R490–R610 an hour for short jobs. On a mine, a grader on monthly hire runs at about R136,000 a month (about 200 machine hours) dry. See grader hire.

Tipper truck hire in Witbank
10 cube tipper truck for hire in Witbank
A 10 cube tipper with driver is R3,700–R5,250 a day with operator. It carries sand, stone, G5 gravel and rubble to and from house and business sites; one TLB loading two tippers keeps a driveway or foundation job moving. See 10 cube tipper truck hire.
Tipper trucks for hire in Witbank by the month
For plant areas, stockpile work and short hauls on a mine, a 14–18 cube tipper is R3,300–R4,000 a day with operator, or about R42,000 a month with driver. For coal on public roads, the truck is a 34 t side tipper at R75,500–R92,000 a month with operator: see side tipper hire in Witbank.
Water tanker and water bowser for hire in Witbank
Water trucks keep haul road dust down and give compaction water on earthworks. An 8,000–12,000 litre truck is R2,000–R2,300 a day with operator, 14,000–18,000 litre R2,400–R2,800 a day with operator, and 23,000–25,000 litre R4,000–R5,800 a day with operator, each with a driver. Mines usually hire them by the month alongside a grader. The truck drives to site, so travel in eMalahleni is small. See water truck hire and dust suppression.
Lowbed truck for hire and lowbed transport in Witbank
Excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, rollers and ADTs travel on a lowbed. A 30 t lowbed runs R23–R90 a km with driver, and smaller plant deliveries R43–R52 a km. On our own machine hires, the lowbed is shown as its own line: inside eMalahleni an excavator's lowbed comes to R6,000–R9,500 there and back. Moving your own machine between mines or to a workshop? Send the machine, its mass and both addresses for a price. See lowbed hire and machine transport.
Lifting, forklifts and site power in Witbank
Crane truck hire in Witbank
Lifting and delivering in one trip: pumps and motors to and from workshops, steel to a site, containers, and tanks onto stands. An 8–10 t crane truck is R2,500–R5,200 a day with operator or about R1,000 an hour, and a 12–15 t R3,200–R5,200 a day. Heavier or longer lifts need a mobile crane: see crane hire in Witbank.
Forklift hire in Witbank
Warehouse and workshop forklifts: R940–R1,600 a day for 1–2 t, R1,150–R1,600 for 2.5–3 t and R1,600–R1,900 for 3.5–5 t, machine only, with our operator on request. Forklifts are lifting machines, so whoever drives one needs a forklift operator certificate from an accredited training provider. eMalahleni (Witbank) is one of the main centres we send machines from. Transport for a forklift there and back usually comes to R1,300–R3,840, shown as its own line on your quote.
Lighting plant for hire in Witbank
Mobile lighting towers for night shifts, haul roads and security are priced per job: exact price on WhatsApp. Send the number of towers, the months and the site. For site power, generators run from R320–R520 a day for a portable unit to R2,400–R4,600 a day for 80–150 kVA, machine only: see generator hire.
Plant hire around eMalahleni
eMalahleni is one of our main centres, so TLBs, tippers and water trucks drive to sites in town and travel is small. Further out, travel is charged by the road distance:
- Ogies and the pits to the south-west: Ogies is about 27 km from eMalahleni (Witbank) by road, inside our normal delivery area. The TLB drives to site, so travel is small and confirmed on WhatsApp with your price.
- Kriel and Eskom's Kriel power station: Kriel is about 52 km from eMalahleni (Witbank) by road. A lowbed for an excavator there and back usually comes to R6,000–R9,500.

"Yellow machines" is the trade name for earthmoving plant: TLBs, excavators, front end loaders, graders, dozers and ADTs, most of which come in yellow paint. Yellow machine hire in Witbank usually means one of these with an operator, by the day for building jobs or by the month on about 200 machine hours at a mine.
Do you supply machines to mines around eMalahleni?
Yes, by the month with operators: side tippers, ADTs, excavators, loaders, graders, dozers and water trucks. Operators attend your medicals and induction before the first shift. Terms, documents and formal quotes are on mining plant hire in Witbank.
Is there undermined ground in Witbank?
Parts of the land around eMalahleni have old underground coal workings beneath them, and some old shallow workings in the coalfield have caused subsidence. Before heavy foundations, deep trenches or a crane set-up near old mine land, ask your engineer or the municipality whether the stand is undermined, and send us the engineer's notes with the booking.
