Middelburg's work: steel, coal and farms
Middelburg sits on the N4 east of eMalahleni, where the N11 heads north past Loskop Dam towards Groblersdal and Limpopo, and roads run south towards Hendrina and Ermelo. Three kinds of work keep machines busy here:
- Steel and smelting. Middelburg has Africa's only integrated stainless steel works and a ferrochrome plant on its industrial side. That means forklifts, crane trucks and mobile cranes for maintenance shutdowns, and TLBs and loaders in the yards.
- Coal. The town sits on the Karoo Basin coalfield, with collieries around it and Eskom's Arnot (about 50 km east) and Hendrina (about 40 km south) power stations nearby. Mines hire side tippers, ADTs, water bowsers and graders by the month.
- Farms and the town. Farmland runs out from town in every direction, and north along the N11 to the farms around Groblersdal. In town it's extensions, new stands and service trenches.
Ground and weather
Middelburg is Highveld: dry winters and summer thunderstorms, with most rain between October and March. On mine land, ask whether the ground is undermined before heavy foundations or deep trenches, and agree where pumped water goes: government lists various Mpumalanga coalfields among the areas with acid rock drainage. Earthworks go fastest in the dry months from April to September.
