Pretoria sits between two haul corridors
The N4 runs straight through Tshwane: west to the chrome and platinum mines, east to the Mpumalanga coalfield and on to Mbombela and the Maputo port. That puts Pretoria side tippers on three kinds of work.
West: chrome and platinum
The hills west of Brits are on the same Bushveld rock as Rustenburg, with chrome and platinum mines along the N4. Brits is about 53 km from Pretoria by road. In 2022, when rail and ports backed up, chrome buyers trucked ore from Johannesburg and Rustenburg to Maputo, and Maputo handled almost 60% of South Africa's chrome ore shipments in April and May that year.
East: coal
Coal from the collieries around eMalahleni feeds power stations, factories and rail sidings. eMalahleni is a main centre for us too, so trucks for coal contracts start inside the coalfield. The coalfield work is on coal transport in Witbank.
Local: aggregate and sand
Crushed stone and sand from quarries and sand pits to Tshwane's road projects, ready-mix plants and large developments, where the haul is long enough and on public roads.

The N4 from Pretoria through Rustenburg and Swartruggens to the Botswana border is a toll road run by the Bakwena N1/N4 concession, and its plazas include Brits and Marikana. A chrome truck running between the platinum belt and Gauteng crosses them every load, so tolls are a real line on the contract.
We write them one of two ways: tolls for your account, or built into the monthly rate or a rate per ton. Diesel follows the same choice, dry (you supply or pay for it) or wet (in the rate). Every truck is loaded inside the 56,000 kg legal limit for the combination and weighed at the loading point.

Example only. A mine must move 8,000 t of chrome a month to a loading point 45 km away. The round trip of 90 km takes about 1 hour 50 minutes, plus about an hour to load, weigh and tip: three loads in a long day shift.

Can I hire a side tipper in Pretoria for a few days?
Side tippers are normally hired by the month, because haulage contracts run month to month. For a short job, a horse with a driver is about R6,300 a day and a side tipper trailer about R2,100 a day. Send the tonnage and dates on WhatsApp and we confirm what fits.
